Georgia high school teacher DaNita Wilson was arrested Tuesday after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) launched an inquiry into her conduct.
The married, 32-year-old math teacher is accused of having s*x with seven students, according to multiple reports. Wilson is facing at least seven counts of s*xual assault, however more charges may be added since the investigation is still in progress.
While six of the Charlton County High School students in question were older than 16 — the age of consent in Georgia — at the time of the alleged crimes, one student was 15, assistant special agent Stacy Carson confirmed to CNN.
Notwithstanding the ages of the male pupils, having s*x with a student is classified as a felony for teachers in Georgia, district attorney Rick Currie told the Florida Times-Union. The maximum sentence for such a crime is 25 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Wilson’s sentence could extend to 50 years in the case of the underage student.
GBI began its investigation following a tip received by the Charlton County School Board, according to Florida-Georgia outlet First Coast News. The school board conducted a brief investigation of its own before passing the case on to the Charlton County Sheriff’s Office.
According to CBS local affiliate WTEV, Wilson has worked for the school since 2003 — primarily as a ninth grade math teacher — and had never had any disciplinary issues.
Wilson was escorted from the school into police custody Tuesday afternoon, but was released the following day on $35,000 bail. She has been suspended with pay from Charlton County High School pending a formal hearing that will determine the status of her employment.
Charlton County Schools superintendent plans to push for Wilson’s termination, local TV station WJXT reports.
