One would think the space has been rendered useless after years of
quarrying has left a ditch so deep and so wide no one would expect any
development to surface there, but a magnificent development found its
way there.
Welcome to the five-star InterContinental Shimao hotel, which is being built inside an abandoned quarry in China.
Located at the base of Tianmenshan Mountain, it extends 100 metres into the quarry, despite the water below.
It will cost a whopping $548 million to build the lavish cave hotel.
Designed by UK company Atkins, there will be 380 rooms over 19 storeys. Two levels will be underwater and will have an aquarium looking out onto an underwater restaurant and guest rooms.
The top of the hotel just pokes above the mountain, by 15 metres. The front will be visible, and the rest will be built into the mountain.
As a bonus, guests will be able to watch a 100m high waterfall from their rooms.
“The idea was to take advantage of this unique land form and to create a garden growing in the air,” Li Xuyang from Shimao Group told Shortlist.co,.
“The hotel is part of the larger project to build Shimao Shanghai Wonderland, a large-scale theme park.”
There will be a sports centre, several restaurants, a hall and conference rooms.
Rooms are expected to cost over $300 a night, and the hotel could open by 2015.
