A 28-year-old algebra teacher at a New Jersey high school has been arrested in Florida after police say she had sêx with her 16-year-old student several times in her classroom and then bolted town.
U.S. Marshals arrested Jennalin Garcia-Calle, a teacher at Plainfield High School, near Newark, on Thursday in Davie, Florida and charged her with second-degree sêxual assault and fourth-degree child abuse.
Garcia-Calle allegedly had sêx with a 16-year-old male student of hers at least three times inside classrooms at the school where she taught. The relationship began in December, according to authorities, who became aware of the situation after the student told family members and friends about what had happened.
“The boy is not at a stage in his life where he’s able to make that type of legal and quite frankly mature enough decision,” Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow told Mycentraljersey.com.“What made this particularly … unusual is that they actually had sêx in school, in her classroom,” added Romankow, who went on to explain that the alleged activity is thought to have occurred during times when classes were actually in session.
“Evidently they blocked the windows and locked the door,” he said.
When Garcia-Calle realized that others had been made aware of the relationship, she apparently fled south, heading for Florida, where she checked herself into a rehabilitation center that focuses on psychiatric and sêxual impulsivity issues. She also allegedly sent the student text messages, demanding that he get rid of certain pieces of evidence from their relationship.
U.S. Marshalls were able to trace the text messages and locate Garcia-Calle in Florida, where she is currently being held without bond and awaiting extradition back to New Jersey.
