Teenage Mother Brutally Murders Her 2-Year-Old Child

Residents were left shell-shocked last week after an 18-year-old mother killed her 20-month-old daughter and dumped the body in a storm drain before she went merry-making in the city of Dzivarasekwa, Zimbabwe.
The suspect, Mellisa Makavani, was arrested on December 24 after she went to the Police Station claiming her baby had been murdered by unknown assailants.
“On 23 December at about 5pm, the accused person tied her daughter on both hands and left her at a secluded area between two streets. She then killed her, dumped the body in a storm drain and went into the city centre to enjoy herself.
On December 24 at about 0900 hours, she returned home from the city centre and started looking for her daughter, but she did not remember where she had left her,” police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri said.
Phiri said Makavani later met Brighton Chirisa and asked him to escort her to the site where she had dumped her.
“Upon arrival at the scene they discovered the baby lying dead in a pool of stagnant water facing downwards. The accused person then went to the station to make a report and the scene was attended to,” Phiri said.
He said the toddler had a wound just above the left eye and both hands were tied with a black string. Makavani was yesterday remanded in custody to January 11 next year after she appeared before Harare magistrate Don Ndirowei on a murder charge.

Yobo Hits Back At Osaze, Calls Him A ‘kid’

102101581
Osaze Odemwingie’s Twitter rant over his exclusion has turned him into a spoiler in the eyes of the Football Federation, some ex-Eagles’ players and even among the current crop as the National team captain, Joseph Yobo, has lashed out at the West Brom forward for being disrespectful for saying the Super Eagles has been without a leader for a long time.
Odemwingie, via his Twitter @OdemwingieP, had insinuated that recent Eagles captains have only looked out for themselves only and so the team lacks a leader.
In reaction to that allegation which seemed like a veiled attack at his captaincy, Yobo has called Odemwingie a ‘kid’ that needs to ‘grow up.
“Osaze has been reckless, disrespectful to most people. He’s not a kid, he should grow up because we cannot continue to baby sit him. He is responsible for his problems,” Yobo told Nigeria’s foremost sports radio, Brila FM on Friday.
“This is not the first time he has been disrespectful. He is fighting all the coaches and at the World Cup he also disrespected me and he later apologised.
“He is not the (Lionel) Messi or (Cristiano) Ronaldo of Nigeria. He should look himself in the mirror.”
While commending the coach, Stephen Keshi for the provisional squad he picked for the AfCON, the  Fenerbache defender however admitted that he was surprised at the exclusion of Obafemi Martins, Osaze, Taye Taiwo and Kalu Uche in the squad.
“I will give him credit for the squad. He will score 95 percent even though one or two should have been there,” said the former Everton defender.
“I’m sure he would have had some sleepless nights in selecting his team. Kalu Uche, Martins, Taye and Osaze not being there was a surprise but the coach must have his reasons and he cannot call everybody.”
Yobo, 32, also hinted next year’s AfCON might be his last so to give way for new faces in the Eagles set up.
“I think I have to admit it that this may be my last Nations Cup. We have to allow younger players to get their chance,” said the central defender, who is Nigeria’smost capped player and has featured in five Nations Cups.

FG foils New Year bomb plots in Abuja, Kano, others

With less than 48 hours to the New Year, the Federal Government has foiled plans by the Boko Haram sect to unleash terror in different parts of the country.
SUNDAY PUNCH authoritatively reports that not less than 15 different bomb attacks have been nipped in the bud since Christmas Day.
The explosives to disrupt public peace in the New Year which were planted in strategic spots in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi and Maiduguri, were discovered by the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit of the Nigerian Police.
These cities have witnessed devastating attacks that left many dead while millions of property were destroyed.
It was learnt that following security reports that the terrorist sect was planning Christmas and New Year attacks, security teams, made up of personnel from various security agencies were posted to notorious areas.
On Friday, three more improvised explosive devices were defused in Maiduguri.
Confirming that security agencies are aware of the planned attacks, the Public Relations Officer of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, Mr. Gbolahan Moronfolu, told our correspondent that more explosives had been defused during the Yuletide.
He said, “We have been defusing the bombs on a daily basis. Even though we have been doing this since the beginning of this year, we have doubled our surveillance in the past few days and we promise Nigerians that we are doing our best to ensure a very peaceful New Year. The Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit will give you precise details.”
The CP in charge of the Anti-Bomb Command, Mr. Folusho Adebanjo, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, had ordered that no bomb explosion must take place during or before the New Year.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent, Adebanjo said, “That is the order we have. The IG said he must not hear that any bomb hurt or affected any Nigerian during the Yuletide. And because we are aware of these plans (bomb attacks), we are working extra hard.
“I can tell you that we have detonated more explosives in Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Maiduguri and Abuja these past days. We are going to foil more before the New Year and even after. We are committed to ensuring that no lives are lost. I am in touch with all the state commands every hour to achieve this.”
SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the IG also warned all state commands that there would be disciplinary measures if any state command was found wanting in ensuring that their states were well monitored.
This directive has put all commissioners of police on their toes as investigations showed that most of them have been holding daily meetings with their Divisional Police Officers while also addressing press conferences to assure the citizenry of protection of their lives and property.
In Edo State, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammad Hurdi, told residents of the state that police would ensure adequate security during the New Year celebrations.
Hurdi said, “We have our men fully on ground, all the corners in the state are occupied with our men; we guarantee you adequate security for protection of lives and property. If you have something bothering you, endeavour to contact the commissioner or police public relations officer, the lines are open 24 hours for quick response. Police is the mother of security, let’s partner to fight crime to barest minimum.”
It was further learnt that security had been tightened around major international airports with extra anti-bomb officials frisking passengers.
Since Friday, security has been increased around the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. All the roads leading to and out of the airport were taken over by security agents.
Vehicles plying the routes were thoroughly screened by counter-terrorism personnel of the police.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on Friday and Saturday, the screening caused a traffic snarl on the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, leading to the domestic wing of the airport. Similar traffic jam was observed along the Oshodi/Ajao Estate section leading to the international wing of the airport.
At the domestic section of the Lagos Airport, the road was narrowed to a single lane with used tyres. All vehicles coming into the airport from the Agege and Ikeja ends of the road passed through the single lane to enable the squad checked them effectively.
Many airport workers and passengers had to alight from commercial vehicles and walked through the traffic to their duty posts.
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja witnessed the same security regime. The Chief Security Officer, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Henry Afobi, told NAN that the tight security measures would continue until the New Year.
Afobi said apart from the Abuja airport, measures had been adopted to ensure that no security threat was experienced at the airports across the country.
He said, “Security is a dynamic issue. We try to be pro-active by putting a lot of measures in place to prevent unforeseen occurrences.”
Still in Abuja, additional security measures had been provided around major hotels including Transcorp, Sheraton and NICON Luxury hotels.
Plain-clothed police as well as private guards were seen scrutinising vehicles and frisking visitors at the hotels.
Sensing that there may be an increase in attacks during the Yuletide, the United States, Canadian and Taiwanese governments warned their nationals against non-essential travel to Nigeria.
These concerns resulted in increased security around foreign missions in Abuja. Besides the security men at the US Embassy and the hotels, armed policemen have been patrolling the area.
An Armoured Personnel Carrier is stationed metres away from the Canadian High Commission located on Bobo Street.
The US Department of State warned that terrorists could extend their activities to the “country’s middle and Southern states.”
The travel warning issued by the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the United States Department of State dated December 21, 2012.
The advisory read, “The Department of State warns US citizens of the risks of travel to Nigeria, particularly during the holiday season, and continues to recommend that US citizens avoid all but essential travel to the following states because of the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks – Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Yobe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kano states.
“US citizens should be aware that, in the light of the continuing violence, extremists may expand their operations beyond Northern Nigeria to the country’s middle and Southern states.”

Oritsejafor Gives Out 6 Cars, 15 Tricycles, 100 Grinding Machines To The Poor

Some weeks back when Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor was reacting to comments that trailed his private jet birthday gift, he pointed out that his ministry has been giving back to the society in many ways, just that Nigerians may not know how much they do because it’s never really publicised. Probably to douse the doubts of those who didn’t believe him, Pastor Oritsejafor’s Word of Life Bible Church in collaboration with its subsidiary, Eagle Flight Micro-Finance Bank has given out cars, tricycles, and grinding machines to the poor.
The event marked the 7th anniversary of a yearly poverty alleviation programme of Eagle Flight Micro-Finance Bank, solely owned by Word of Life Bible Church, founded by current National President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, and it comes up every 26th of December.

In all, six brand new Hyundai cars, 15 tricycles, 100 grinding machines, 3.8 KVA power generating plant, Omega gas cookers, three deep freezers, a set of crystal glass dinning set, 32 LG LCD Tv set, washing machines and 200 bags of rice as consolation prices, amongst other items were given to the needy through raffle draw.
Among those in the crowd who had come with expectation, and who was not disappoin-ted at the occasion was Mrs. Osatemu Tejiri Jennifer. Through the draw, she became the first car owner to the bewilderment of her husband, Mr. Osatemu. The 31-year old mother of one was short of words when she found her way to the stage as she placed her two hands on her chest, unable to speak for several moments over fate that had befallen her.
When she finally found her voice, Osatemu, a teacher in a private primary school in Okwagbe, one of the riverine communities around Warri, was full of appreciation to Pastor Oritsejafor in particular and by extension God, for the car gift which she disclosed, would be deployed into commercial venture to generate income for her family.
Emmanuel Tijere, 46, was until recently had fed his family with proceeds from ridding okada in Effurun, until November 1, when the Delta State government outlawed the ubiquitous motorcycle in Asaba, Warri and Effurun area of the state. After the ban he had no visible means of keeping his family until a friend told him of the poverty alleviation programme of Word of Life.
He promptly applied and won a tricycle for which he was very grateful to the first couple of Word of Life Bible Church. The member of Deeper Christrian Life Bible Church, Effurun District, said: “I thank Papa Ayo and Mama Helen for the generosity. I thank God for the using Pastor Ayo to bless the people of this area.
I never thought that things like this can be true. I thought that if it is true it is only for members of Word of Life Bible Church. But what I have seen today, I can boldly say that what they are doing here is real and not one of those boju boju thing that people do these days.”
Speaking at the event held at the instance of the Eagle Flight Micro-Finance Bank, National President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, said the gifts were his own way of giving back to the society, especially the less privileged; noting that the essence of wealth was all about sharing with the needy. He appealed to governments at all levels in the country as well as corporate organisations to be more proactive in coming up with similar empowerment programmes that could help cut down the poverty rate in the country.
He said the level of poverty in the country prompted his intervention and tasked churches to start looking towards such direction. While stressing that the responsibility of government at all levels was to cater for the welfare and security of the citizenry, he regretted that some companies operating in the country and in particular, were making money without giving back to their host communities.
“Why is it that wealthy Nigerians and corporate organisations cannot do much more than what the church is doing in terms of bringing succour to the people? Is it the church that people should really be concerned about? There are institutions, corporate bodies, industrial establishments that are entrenched in different communities and are making millions of naira. You want to look at how much some of these companies are putting back into the communities; it would be ridiculous how meager it is”, he lamented.
“I will personally use this opportunity to challenge corporate organisations, micro-finance and commercial banks and all different kinds of organisations to look again at this very important issue. If we have done this little and another does the same thing, when you add all of them together, you will be surprised how many Nigerians will be out of the poverty level”, he noted.

Fulani, Gwari Clash in Abuja: Two Die, Thousands Displaced

With less than 48 hours to another year, a communal clash has erupted in Gwako, under Gwagwalada Local Government Area of the Federal Capital Territory.
fulani-herdsmen[1]
The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaib, who stated this on Sunday, said the clash drew the attention of the agency and the Ministry of the Capital Territory to jointly activate their Search and Rescue teams.
The prompt intervention of the two agencies including security personnel from the police, civil defence corps and military had helped to curtail the escalation of the crisis which started Saturday as a result of encroachment of herds of cattle into farmlands in the area.
NEMA Director General, Muhammad Sani-Sidi, who commended the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Muhammad, for the promptness of his agencies and his physical presence at scenes, appealed to the warring parties to live peacefully with one another and eschew any form of violent as we enter the New Year.
Sani-Sidi who disclosed that two lives were lost and 27 communities affected, said that over 1500 internally displaced people are currently squatting in a temporary camp on the permanent campus of the University of Abuja in Gwagwalada area.
The minister, who led other government agencies to assess the impact of the incident appealed to the communities to remain calm as the government would ensure that the causes of the crisis would soon be addressed so that they could return to their homes.
The minister had asked NEMA to provide more amenities to the victim in the camp as he also constituted an emergency team for conflict resolution and relief distribution to the affected communities which had membership from response agencies and Urban Affairs Department of FCTA.

Obama Grants Nigerian Student Permanent Residency

sopuruchiA Nigerian immigrant’s dream came true when President Barack Obama signed into law a rare private bill granting him permanent residency in the Unites States.
Victor Chukwueke, who lives in Michigan on an expired visa, came to the United States 11 years ago to undergo treatment for massive face tumors.
He graduated from a university in the state, and plans to attend an Ohio medical school that requires him to have permanent residency, also known as a green card.
In a rare act, the United States Congress passed a private bill this month granting him permanent residency. Obama signed the bill Friday.
Private bills — which only apply to one person and mostly focus on immigration — are rarely approved. His is the only one to pass in Congress in two years.
“I was overwhelmed with joy; it was nothing less than a miracle,” the 26-year-old says. “Only in this country can so many miraculous and wonderful things happen to someone like me.”
Before coming to the United States at age 15, Chukwueke lived in the southeastern Nigeria town of Ovim.
He suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes massive life-threatening tumors on his face.
Treated as an outcast because of his deformed face, he was depressed and humiliated, he says. His family abandoned him at an orphanage after taking him to the nation’s best facilities for treatment.
“I went to a large teaching hospital in Nigeria and the doctor touched my face and said there was nothing they could do,” he says. ” I cried and begged him to do something. I was so tired of the humiliation.”
Nuns from the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy rescued him from the orphanage in 2001 and arranged for a Michigan doctor to perform surgery on him.
He considers himself lucky to have developed the tumors.
“Without them, I would not have met the nun, left Nigeria, arrived in the U.S. and had the miracle to attend medical school,” he says.
He lives with the nuns in Oak Park, Michigan. They have cared for him since he came to the U.S., where he has undergone seven surgeries, including one that left him blind in the right eye.
Despite the obstacles, he remains committed to getting an education.
He finished his GED — the equivalent of a high school education — while undergoing treatment and enrolled at a community college.
A benefactor helped him attend Wayne State University, where he graduated last year with a bachelor’s in biochemistry and chemical biology. He had a 3.82 GPA and gave the university’s commencement speech.
“Should I call myself a victim, or should I press forward to my dreams?” he asked during the speech amid thunderous applause.
Soon after his graduation, the University of Toledo in Ohio admitted him to medical school. The only hurdle: The program requires him to have permanent residency status.
With Obama’s signature, his wish has come true.
“My own personal struggles to receive treatment have motivated and encouraged me to pursue a medical career … to alleviate the pain and suffering of others,” he says. “A medical career will allow me many gratifying years of making a difference in the health and lives of others.”
Chukwueke’s journey to get legalized has seen many strangers rally to his help.
Inspired by his story, Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, sponsored the bill, S. 285. The measure passed the Senate in the summer and the House this week.
Attorney Thomas K. Ragland took his case pro bono.
“Victor’s story is remarkable,” says Ragland, who is based in Washington D.C. “Here is this kid who comes from Nigeria, he was taunted and teased for his diseases, and he comes to this country and excels, despite so many surgeries. It is a testament of not letting anything get in the way.”
The number of illegal immigrants in the United States was estimated at 11.5 million last year.
Following the signature, the State Department will reduce by one the number of immigrant visas available to Nigerians
