Total, French Embassy To Give Scholarships To 5 Nigerians Each Year

total_1_

Total Plc. and the Embassy of France in Nigeria have initiated a joint scholarship scheme to sponsor the training of five Nigerians abroad every year.
A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by Mr Charles Ebereonwu, the Manager (External Communication) of Total, said that the scheme was part of the company’s efforts to contribute to the development of the country’s education sector.
It noted that the Joint Scholarship Scheme (‘TQJS’) titled “Total E &P Nigeria Ltd. (TEPNG) /Quai d’ Orsay” would take effect from the 2012/2013 academic session.
The statement, however, said that the pilot stage of the scheme had commenced this year with one candidate sponsored to study international law in France.
It stressed that the agreement for the training was signed by Mr Guy Maurice, the Managing Director of TEPNG, and Amb. Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, the French Ambassador to Nigeria.
The statement quoted de Labriolle as saying that the scheme was based on the need to contribute to the training of Nigerians in different fields, while commending Total for contributing to the development of the Nigerian society.
It also quoted Maurice as saying that the initiative was a reflection of the company’s confidence in the country and a continuation of what it had been doing in the past.
“The agreement makes provision for a four-man steering committee to manage the scheme on behalf of the parties and each of the international scholarship is worth about 54,000 Euros,” Maurice said in the statement.
Total has been collaborating with top-rated institutions across the world, as part of its human capacity development efforts.
It is also the main sponsor of the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), a post-graduate institute at the University of Port Harcourt, managed in collaboration with the prestigious Institute France du Petrole (IFP) in France.

Mixed Reactions Trail Dbanj’s Koko Concert+Comments That Will Make You Laugh

The 2012 Edition of the Koko Concert which took place last night in Eko Atlantic City in Lagos state has come and gone – it was arguably the most hyped and anticipated show of the year with a star-studded cast of musical acts and what’s moe, it was hosted by Idris Elba.
However, the concert has generated a whole lot of debate as Nigerians especially those who attended the show, have blasted the organizers for making them trek long and tortuous distances at that time of the night and for starting behind schedule.
Moreso, there are allegations that Dbanj was rude to his fans when he reportedly showed preferential treatment to guests at the VIP and those who paid for tables as against the regulars who coughed out N5,000.
I have had a great laugh reading through most of the comments on Twitter regarding the Koko concert and by the way, #KokoConcert is now trending on Twitter while Dbanj is now the most followed celebrity in Nigeria with 495, 702 followers as at the time of this report – that position was initially held by Don Jazzy.
Here are my favourite tweets relating to the Koko concert…

Eagles Can Win Nations Cup Without Me – Obagoal

Unlike his compatriot who went on an emotional outburst against football administrators in the country, team coaches, former players and even veiled attacks on present players in the national team, Obafemi Martins has maintained a studied silence on his exclusion from the provisional 32-man list that was released by coach Stephen Keshi that will fight for a place to represent the country at the forthcoming Orange African Cup of Nations in South Africa.
The Levante forward who is in the country for the Yuletide, said he is not disappointed at his exclusion and believes the present crop of Eagles can win the coveted title without him.
“They have a team capable of winning the nations cup without me. I wish them all the best in South Africa”, said Obagoal when he visited a hospital in Lagos on Christmas day on behalf of his foundation.
Martins who has made three nations cup appearances in 2006, 2008 and 2010, said, “I will now enjoy my holidays and then return to Spain to focus with my club.”

TANKER FIRE EDO: My Husband Was Burnt To Death While Trying To Save His Bus – Widow Of Bus Driver

Madam Blessing Oghagbon, widow of late Mr Kingsley Oghagbon, who lost his life after a tanker loaded with petroleum product exploded last Tuesday, said yesterday, that she would not have lost the bread winner of the family, if the late husband had not suffered stomach upset which forced him back home, where the tragedy occurred.
Burnt-bus
Vanguard learnt that the driver of the tanker, which was coming from Ekiosa Market on the Murtala Muhammed Road, Benin City, lost control of the tanker apparently due to break failure, rammed into a side drain and exploded. The driver of the tanker was said to have escaped alive shortly after the incident. The tanker was completely burnt .
The petroleum product flooded the road where he accident occurred and over 12 cars and four motorcycles that were parked by the road went up in flames. There was pandemonium at the point the tanker exploded, as people ran for their lives. Some residents abandoned their homes thinking it was a bomb. It was also learnt that a commercial motorcycle rider lost his life in the inferno. But an eyewitness told Vanguard how late Mr. Oghagbon lost his life and denied insinuations that a commercial motorcycle rider also lost his life.
The eyewitness, who identified herself as Esther, said: “I was standing by the road when I heard the explosion and there was fire everywhere. Fuel was now flowing inside the gutter and vehicles were burning. The commercial motorcyclist believed to have died did not die, he tried to start his Okada but it exploded. His leg was burnt though he managed to escape alive.”
Sympathizers thronged the residence of the deceased Kingsley, when Vanguard visited. The deceased wife, Blessing, who was visibly wrecked as she recounted watching her husband die in pains, lamented that the deceased, who was a bus driver, left her with three children and cried that he would not have died, if he had gone straight to wash the bus.
“What can I say now? We were all sitting in the room when we heard people shouting outside that a tanker fell into a gutter and that there was fire everywhere. My husband just came back from Onitsha, Anambra State. He wanted to wash the bus but said he had running stomach and decided to come back home first. So when we heard the noise, he ran out to take the bus to the car wash. He entered the bus and started it, the bus exploded. When I saw the explosion I started shouting, telling people that my husband was inside the bus that they should help me.
The widow, Mrs. Blessing Oghagbon and her late husband, Kingsley
“I ran inside the house to look for my children and from there I returned to the moat area and was shouting, telling people that my husband was in the fire. But some people were saying he must have escaped to somewhere. Suddenly, we saw him burning and he fell inside the gutter. I feel very bad now because he just came back from work because he was having running stomach. He came to ease himself and to take the bus to the car wash before the incident. He just started the bus before it caught fire. How I am going to take care of three children? she cried.
One of the deceased neighbours who was devastated by the death, lamented that Kingsley died because he was trying to save the bus from being burnt. He said: “It is sad because the bus does not belong to him, so he did not want any thing to happen to it before the owner ask him to pay. He died trying to save the bus. He should have remained alive and allow the bus to be destroyed. That is why I am really in pains. Poverty is a bad thing.”
The deceased cousin, Charles, lamented that if “he had known, he would have gone straight to the car wash. But you could see that the devil was at work. The tanker driver has escaped now, so we don’t even know who to run to. Who is going to take care of the three children? I don’t know how we are going to cope.”

Obasanjo Jokes About Fire Accident

Former President Obasanjo simply joked over the fire incident. The journalists who expected a briefing from former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the cause of the fire at his house got a shock as the former leader instead joked over the incident.
obasanjo-at-75
After newspapers broke the story of the fire, Mr. Obasanjo started receiving phone calls from sympathisers, and welcomed the ones who rushed to the Abeokuta residence, the former president asked to meet with the few journalists present at the scene. The briefing by the former president was expected to dwell on the cause of the fire, which was put out by officials of the fire service. Instead, Mr. Obasanjo decided to make jest about the fire.
Speaking in Yoruba language, the former President told journalists to go to town and sing about the fire. “Go, go and sing to the whole world that “the Kings house that is gutted by fire only beautifies the house,” – the former president said.
While journalists expected him to continue, Mr. Obasanjo simply dismissed the journalists after the statement. The former president’s hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, was gutted by fire for over 30 minutes on Thursday before officials of the fire service put out the fire. Though no official cause has been given for the fire, it is supposed that the fire started from Mr. Obasanjo’s private office, a stone throw to his bedroom, before the security in the premises raised alarm, and the state fire service was contacted.

Gang-defiled Indian Girl Commits Suicide

A teenage girl who alleged that she was gang-defiled last month in India has committed suicide, police said on Thursday.
The victim committed suicide on Wednesday night at her house in Badshahpur village, 100km from Chandigarh, after police failed to register a case for over a month after she complained that she was gang-defiled by three youths.
In her suicide note, recovered by police, the victim said local police officers had failed to register a case of r*pe despite her complaint. She accused them of trying to pressurize her for a compromise, humiliating her and asking her uncomfortable questions by calling her to the police station repeatedly.
Police sources say that the Gagga police station supervisor, Sub-Inspector Gurcharan Singh, has been dismissed and a probe by a senior officer ordered into the incident.
The victim wrote in the suicide note that the police officer used to call her to the police station and asked “uncomfortable” questions. Sources said the people accused were influential people in the area.
In a later development however, police arrested two men and a woman in connection with the gang-r*pe incident.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh expressed shock and grief over the “tragic and shameful r*pe of a girl and her subsequent suicide following the pressure by the police to compromise with her defilers”.
In a statement in Chandigarh, Amarinder Singh said: “It is quite shocking that such heinous and shameful incidents were taking place every day which vindicated the Congress stand that law and order situation has touched its nadir. The way these incidents are taking place the time will not be too far when the President’s rule will be the only option in Punjab.”
He said that dismissing lower-level police officials was not the solution to the breakdown in law and order in Punjab.
“It needs to be ascertained as at whose behest the concerned SHO was trying to pressurise the girl to go for compromise that she was forced to commit suicide,” he said. [GN]

Gas Station Attendant Humiliated, stri*ped, Sacked Over N428 Tip

A gas station attendant at a Dubai gas station (name withheld) has been sacked for pocketing a Dh10 (N427.84) tip. Santosh Kumar, 24, said he was terminated on the first week of his job after his supervisor found Dh10 hidden inside his socks.
According to him, attendants at fuel stations run by the Dubai-based Emirates General Petroleum Corporation are routinely strip-searched for tips.
“I was subjected to this humiliation on my first day at work. My supervisor took me to a storeroom after duty hours and asked me to remove my shirt and vest. Then he gestured me to take off my pants. I was near tears. When I refused, he ordered me to jump five times to shake off any coins I might be hiding,” recalls Kumar.
Many other attendants confirmed undergoing the demeaning treatment, saying their company policy forbids them from pocketing tips.
“Last week, there was a shortage of Dh100 (N4278.40) at our station. All of us were taken to the store room and stri*ped unclad by the supervisor. He even asked us to remove our underwear. It was so shameful I wanted to die,” said Bashir who works as an attendant at an Emarat (not real name) gas station in Dubai.
The attendants said as per their company policy, all tips collected by staff should be surrendered to the company.
“They made it clear during our training. But since our salaries are low, the temptation is always there,” said Kumar who joined the company on a Dh1,000 (N42784.00) salary.
Fuel station attendants get between Dh40 (N1711.36) and Dh80 (N3422.72) in customer tips daily. But they rarely get to take it home.
Commenting on the issue, Emarat said their employees are well aware of the rules and regulations that they are expected to follow from the time they are hired.
“Our stance on tips is addressed and explained during the training that follows after a staff is recruited and is a part of our internal operating procedures. We expect our employees to deliver the highest level of customer service standard and do not want tips to cause any discrimination or bias in the service offered to customers. The corporation goes to great lengths to ensure that our staff are treated with love and care and any little money generated as tips is reinvested into staff welfare and entertainment funds,” Emarat said in a statement to XPRESS.
However, attendants claimed instances of staff being frisked and caught trying to sneak out with tips are routine. “You are made to stand like a thief as they dig into your shirt, pants and even socks after a day’s work,” said another attendant, Rahman.
According to lawyers no company has the right to strip search employees, adding that the practice violates human rights.
“These acts are considered immoral and illegal as they violate human dignity and honour. Nobody has the right to conduct strip-searches as it is a violation of human rights. Only the police are authorised to do it.
“Those who underwent such an act should complain to the police immediately,” said Mona Yahya Mohammad, legal adviser, Bin Ismail Advocates and Legal consultants.
Fuel depot staff alleges the supervisors at each depot are authorised by the company to frisk their juniors. Strip-searches are carried out randomly to confiscate tips not surrendered by the staff. In addition, there are spot checks at fuel pumps when workers are serving customers.
“There are surprise checks even on buses taking us back to our accommodation and people get caught if they managed to get away in the first round of checking,” said Vaishna, another staff.
But the humiliating practice of strip search and rigorous monitoring are not deterring the staff from making a few extra bucks through tips. “We keep devising new methods to hide the money. We are doing it not because we are dishonest. We genuinely believe we are entitled to the tips we get for our good service,” said Vaishna.
Fuel distributors like Epco, Enoc and Abu Dhabi-based Adnoc do not have similar ‘no tips’ policy and their staff told XPRESS they are never frisked. [XPRESS, GN]
