NAFDAC Destroys Fake Drugs Worth N400m

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday in Makurdi, destroyed substandard, fake and adulterated medicines and food valued at N400million.
nafdacThe Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii, who led the destruction, vowed that the agency would continue to destroy harmful items in pursuant to its mandate of ensuring a healthy country.
He said that the items were seized by various NAFDAC units across the North Central zone and explained that most of the items were expired medicines.
“Most of the expired drugs were voluntarily handed over to NAFDAC by officials of the state ministries of health and other stakeholders,’’ he stated.
The NAFDAC boss decried the prevalence of fake drugs and described the situation as “economic sabotage and terrorism against public health.
“I have always urged religious and community leaders, traditional rulers and members of the public to support the fight against the cankerworm. I will continue to sing that song,’’ he said.
The NAFDAC boss said that the agency was determined to rid the country of all counterfeit and fake drugs via proactive approaches that would combat the menace.
He said that the agency had modern technologies to track fake and adulterated drugs and called for public support toward total success.
Said Orhii: “We have deployed the latest technology in this fight and we are happy that we have results. We are the first medicine regulatory authority in the world to deploy the use of the TRUSCAN equipment to identify counterfeit medicines on the field.
“We have also deployed the Mobile Authentication System, Minilab and Black Eye and they have also greatly contributed to a significant drop in the percentage of fake and counterfeit medicines in circulation in our country,” he said.
He assured Nigerians of the agency’s continued onslaught against fake drug sellers and their agents, saying that surveillance and enforcement operations were being intensified at the ports, borders and other identified routes used by smugglers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agency last week launched its sensitisation campaign against fake, adulterated drugs and foods in Benue and promised to take the campaign to the rural areas.

Prostitutes Learn English For Football Fans In Brazil

“Good morning, girls!” Igor Fuchs exclaimed as he greeted his students at the start of English class in this southeastern Brazilian city.
brazilBut this is no ordinary crowd and the curriculum, for the most part, is focused on s*x props.
Fuchs teaches English to prostitutes so they can give a warmer welcome to tens of thousands of football fans headed here for June’s Confederations Cup, as well as next year’s World Cup.
The city’s 80,000 s*x workers are counting on brisk business as authorities predict 40,000 tourists will be in town next month for a total of three matches June 15-30. A whopping 140,000 are expected to follow for the 2014 World Cup.
With that in mind, the Association of Prostitutes has been offering free English classes to its members at a local mall since March.
“We teach basic expressions but also have demonstrations with er*tic paraphernalia so they can learn the names, how to use them and propose them,” said Fuchs, a volunteer who also teaches Spanish and French.
The goal, says association president Cida Vieira, is to provide prostitutes with communication skills to keep clients who don’t speak Portuguese happy — both during the upcoming sports extravaganzas and beyond.
“We deal with ‘gringos’ (foreign men) daily on the streets and in discos,” Vieira said. “We want to train the girls so they can better serve them.”
So far, 300 prostitutes have signed up.
Attendance is irregular and older women like 55-year-old Maria Aparecida, who has been in the business for almost three decades, tend to come to class more often than others.
“I have always wanted to speak English,” she told AFP. “I raised my kids by doing this job.”
Demand is definitely there — on both sides of the booming s*x trade.
“Tourists are going to flock here and those who come from abroad like to spend,” said 26-year-old Vitoria, clad in a pink mini dress as she waited for work at one of many s*x motels on busy Guaicurus Street.
On average, she sees 20 customers a day in her tiny room, with 15-minute sessions costing between $10 and $25.
Some of the women view learning English as a way of securing their livelihood down the road.
“It’s important to speak English because one day I will quit prostitution to find another job and another language will help,” said Vitoria.
But not all are sold on the need to speak English — or any other foreign language for that matter.
“I have never had American or French clients,” said Yasmin, a transvestite, as he showed off some deft samba moves on Avenida Afonso Pena before rushing to negotiate with a client in a waiting car.
“I know basic words such as ‘good morning’ and ‘condom’,” said 31-year-old Juliana across the street.
“For the rest, I get by with gestures. All men are the same. They come for the same thing. No need for words.”
Belo Horizonte is not the only Brazilian city taking steps to beef up its s*x industry offerings ahead of the World Cup, which will be followed by the 2016 Summer Olympics.
A shortage of hotel rooms has led authorities in Rio de Janeiro to invest millions of dollars to convert raunchy motels to accommodate the legions of tourists expected for the events.

Passerby pushes suicidal man off a bridge

passen
After keeping police and rescue workers on their toes for hours, an angry passerby pushed a suicidal man off a bridge last week, according to reports in the news media.
Footage has emerged of an angry passerby pushing a suicidal man off a bridge in Guangdong province, China. Retired soldier Lai Jiansheng, 66, reached out to shake hands with Chen Fuchao before shoving him off.
The heavily indebted Chen Fuchao fell eight feet into a bed that was partially inflated by emergency air. He was hospitalized with wrist injuries and back injuries.
Chen Fuchao will be charged with disorderly conduct, while Lai was charged with causing intentional injury. He told the news media that he pushed the possible suicide jumper off the bridge because he was tired of the man’s selfish activity, according to reports.
Chen wanted to kill himself because he had 2 million yuan or $294,000 in debt after a failed construction project, according to reports
