Flying Eagles thrash Congo DR 3-1

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles yesterday defeated Congo DR 3-1 in the final Group B match to book a place in the semi finals of the ongoing Africa Youth Championship holding in Algeria.
A brace from Aminu Umar and one from Abduljeleel Ajagun were all the Nigerian team needed to qualify for the last four of the tourney having started the competition on a poor note.
The John Obuh-led team who needed to avoid a defeat to be sure of their progress after their 0-1 loss to Mali in the opener produced their best performance of the tournament as they tore the Congo DR defence apart.
Despite the absence of striker Olanrewaju Kayode who missed the encounter due to two yellow cards, he picked up in the first two matches, the champions were more businesslike in their approach and it was a matter of minutes before the Eagles got on the score sheet.
Their efforts paid off in the 34th minute when inspirational captain, Abduljeleel Ajagun converted a penalty to give Nigeria the lead.
Ajagun would have doubled the lead four minutes later after being played in by Aminu Umar who was impressive with his electric runs on the right wing, but his short went wide off the post.
Barely a minute after the miss, Umar took the bull by the horn as he capitalized on Congo DR’s defensive frailties in the 39th minute to beat the goalkeeper for Nigeria’s second, thus ending the first half with a two-goal advantage.
Ajagun’s beautiful pass two minutes after the restart of the second half found Umar who despite being sandwiched in between the Congolese defenders, calmly tipped the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to put the game beyond their opponent.
Efforts to consolidate on their lead were however met with stiff opposition from the Congolese who appeared determined not to let in more goals, while Congo DR’s industrious move 18 minutes from full time produced a consolation goal.

All Progressives Congress may change name

There are indications that mega opposition party, All Progressives Congress, is considering a name change should the African People’s Congress beat it to the APC acronym.

Both political associations are laying claim to the acronym in their bid to be recognised as political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that APC may add the alphabet “N” (which will stand for Nigeria) to its version of APC, to distinguish it from any other.

A prominent member of the association said adding ‘N’ to the acronym will solve the controversy.

“We may just add ‘N’ to our acronym if this matter drags on for too long. We find it diversionary.”

However, National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, Rotimi Fashakin, said the name change was speculative.

He said, “Whatever anyone tells you about our merger now is speculative and untrue. We have said it over and again that the acronym APC is our intellectual property, whatever the PDP and its agents in the system are doing to frustrate our registration will not succeed.”

Also speaking on the issue, National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Lai Mohammed, said the All Progressive Congress would not change its name.

He said, “It is a big lie. We are not changing our name. We are sticking to our name.”

Calls made to the mobile telephone number of the National Publicity Secretary of the All Nigeria People’s Party, Mr. Emma Enekwu, did not go through. He also did not respond to a text message sent to him.

When one of our correspondents contacted the Chief Press Secretary to the National Chairman of INEC, Mr. Kayode Idowu, he said, “No comment.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said on Saturday that the commission was neither aware nor frustrating the registration of the All Progressives Congress.

Jega who spoke on the Hausa programme, Hanu Dayawa, in Kaduna which was monitored by our correspondent on Saturday , noted that the APC officially notified the commission of their intention to merge into a political party about six days ago.

The INEC boss also ruled out the possibility of adopting the electronic voting in the 2015 general elections, saying the constitution was against the use of the system.

Insisting that no political party had notified the commission of any merger plan ahead of the 2015 general elections, Jega said, “The issue has generated controversy in the past few weeks. Firstly, the truth is that no political party wrote to notify us that it is planning to merge with some other political parties until the past five days or so.

“It is not true that we were notified. The issue became serious when one group came out to seek for registration and I guess that was what made them to write and notify us. But that is not the issue. The main issue is that there are guidelines for registered political parties who want to merge to become a new party. There are also guidelines for individuals or groups who want to form a political party for registration.

“The guidelines for registering new political pray are different from that of registered political parties who want to merge. For registered political parties who want to merge, they must have agreed to merge and each of the political party in the merger must hold a convention and agreed to withdraw their registration as a political party to become part of the new party to be form through the merger.

“After their conventions, they are expected to write and request INEC to withdraw their former registration and say they want to join a new party. In spite of all the controversies, none of these political parties who want to merge has held their convention.

“We only read in the newspapers that they have the intention of merging and nobody wrote us until about five or six days ago. If anybody wants to register a political party, you are expected to tell INEC of your intention by saying that you want to register a party with so and so name and you want to know the procedure for doing so.”

“People are just making noise over the name which is in the market while we have not even gotten to that stage. While all these noise were going on, another group came up seeking for registration with the same name.”

On the use of the electronic voting system in the 2015 general election, Prof. Jega noted that it was clear that the Nigerian constitution has prohibited the use of the system, adding that the commission would only use technology to improve on the registration of voters and improve on the electoral process.

The North, Atiku and 2015

In 2010, the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) met and constituted a committee chaired by a former finance Minister, Adamu Ciroma. The committee had, in its terms of reference, the  responsibility of selecting a single candidate out of the contestants then, as a way of charting a formidable political direction for the North.

The contestants were  General Ibrahim Babangida, former National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and fomer Governor Bukola Saraki. The  candidate so selected would contest against Goodluck Jonathan at the PDP primaries.  Atiku emerged as the consensus candidate. They couldn‘t have been more correct because Atiku is a patriarch and his pedigree stands him out as a true democrat.

Despite this consensus choice and the confidence exuded by his followers, the circumstances and the events that played out from Aso Rock and the king makers in PDP frustrated his well oiled political machine. The democratic structures he built with friends and colleagues in the business of politics were hijacked and confiscated leaving him prostrate with only his ardent followers.

At this juncture, it is germane to respect his resilience  spirit to continue to participate in our fluid democratic presentations. His signature in the Nigerian project cannot be wished away because history and posterity will hold us accountable. He was the consensus choice then and still the consensus choice today and hopefully for 2015.The list of those wanting to be president in 2015 is growing by the day especially in the North which is getting restive with the idea of power rotation or zoning. Atiku is a political gladiator with decades of experience that dates back to the military era.

He has a political outreach well greased over the years with standing monuments in the Nigerian democratic. If the North wants to be taken seriously they should invoke the consensus agreement reached in 2010 which settled for Atiku preparatory to the 2011 general elections. It should be assumed that the consensus understanding still subsists until the mandate is realised. The purpose for that consensus idea has not been realised and we all know how impossible it was to realise it because of the do-or-die politics that prevailed at that time. All the processes were compromised!

Atiku‘s mandate is more marketable than some of the names featuring today. He stands out towering in our political landscape better than most of these fair weather politicians navigating our shores . Leaving Atiku now for a new choice in our presently unpredictable polarised political terrain is a luxury that we should not contemplate because it is like taking a nap beside a tranquilised lion.

The eminent persons in the North should go to the drawing table immediately to map out strategies to garner support for Atiku as the consensus choice. This mandate should be presented to the South immediately as a way of assuring the South that there is no hidden agenda in their quest for power rotation which is meant to foster unity and engender equity.  This is the only way they can erase all the distrust and acrimony pervading our country today. He should not be perceived as a northern choice but a Nigeria people’s choice.

The recent romance between Obasanjo and Atiku is a welcome development. If there is anyone that should wholeheartedly support Atiku, it should be his former boss, Baba Iyabo. And it is very timely for him to throw his weight behind his former deputy because it will send the right signals. This rapport with Baba Iyabo is a further testament that Atiku is still the preferred choice because nothing seems to have changed.

The Atiku Campaign Organisation should get to work immediately setting up structures and mobilising aggressively for the challenges ahead.

Pressure On Lawmakers To Remove Gov. Okorocha

A NEW wave of impeachment saga now sweeps through Imo State, following a new demand on the lawmakers to impeach Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Coordinator of Save Imo, Nze Ebubagu Ekenulo, Saturday submitted a letter to the House of Assembly asking the 27-member Assembly to commence impeachment process against the governor for gross abuse of office.

This follows Saturday’s inauguration, in Owerri, of a seven-man panel, recently set up to investigate allegations of “gross misconduct and bribery scandal” against the Imo State Deputy Governor, Mr. Jude Agbaso.

The inauguration, which was conducted by High Court Judge, Goddy Ahanihu, commenced at 10.30 am, and was concluded in about one hour.

But Ekenulo, who addressed journalists, at the weekend, said the move to instigate impeachment process against Okorocha was to save the state from cataclysm.

The letter titled, “Without Prejudice, Petition Against Governor Rochas Okorocha OON, A Call for His Immediate Impeachment for Abuse of Office, Diversion of Government Revenue and other offences”, and signed by Ekenulo, urged the House to commence the impeachment process without delay.

The letter, which was addressed to the Speaker of the Assembly, alleges that the governor has plunged the state into financial recklessness more than any other official of government.

The letter was supported by as sworn affidavit from the state High Court, dated March 20, 2013 to substantiate the allegations against the governor.

Ekenulo threatened to sue the Assembly if it failed to carry out the process, just as they did in the case of the deputy governor, Agbaso.

In the 13 –point allegations against the governor, the group accused Okorocha of “unlawful use and diversion of government revenue and funds to establish his private university at Ogboko, contrary to his oath of office; concealment of revenue from proceeds of the concession of Imo Concorde Hotel, Adapalm, Imo Transport Company, Imo General Hospitals and conversion of proceeds of same to personal use contrary to his oath of office as governor; and approval of 100 percent upfront payment for road contract to JPROS International Company, without proper evidence of work completion contrary to the public procurement laws.”

Other allegations include:

• “unlawful use of the proceeds of the Imo State bond by diversion to unapproved projects contrary to the Imo State bond law;

• unlawful use of the proceeds of the bond to the tune of over N13.3 billion without appropriation;

• approval of award of contract to JPROS International without advertisement and other contract processes contrary to the public procurement laws;

• Unauthorized and unlawful use of local government allocation to the tune of N63 billion;

• Unauthorized borrowing of N63 billion naira from a financial market, contrary to the Imo state appropriation law;

• Approval for purchase of furniture to the tune of N4 billion for Government House without proper appropriation contrary to the Imo State appropriation law;

• Approval and award of road contracts without design, advertisement and public bidding, without due process;

• Concealment of government revenue and unlawful use of same without appropriation contrary to the constitution and his oath of office;

• Conversion of government assets and properties — Imo deputy governor’s lodge and two-storey building at directors quarters, Orlu Road to Lamonde Hotel, a company in which he has interest — contrary to his oath of office.

“The governor is not above the law, neither is he untouchable for breach of the law and the constitution,” according to the letter.

Absence of the Chief Judge of the State, Benjamin Njemanze, for the inauguration of the panel to probe allegations against Deputy Governor Agbaso, however, raised concerns over the integrity of the event that took place at the main Conference Hall of the Secretariat of the Council of Traditional Rulers, Owerri.

All members of the panel were present. The panel members include Justice Godwin Chukwuemeka Ihekire (rtd), as Chairman; James Gozie Nze, a lawyer, and Egeonu Chijioke Mere, another lawyer.

Others members are Elder Humphrey Ajaelu, Vin Onyeka, Cecilia Chinyere Oladimeji, and Oparaku Nwarie.

In his inaugural address, Ahunihu, who swore in the chairman, said he was performing the Chief Judge’s role in line with the request from the Imo State House of Assembly to set up a panel to investigate the gross misconduct and bribery scandal against the deputy governor.

He charged the members to carry out their duties in line with the Constitution on Section 188 sub section 7a, as well as the guidelines set by the State Assembly.

“As representatives of the State’s Judiciary…our duty…is constitutional,” he said.

Anunihu said members of the panel were people of proven integrity, urging them to discharge their duties creditably and openly.

He maintained that in compliance and under the relevant section in the Constitution, the House drew procedure of conduct on rule 4, sub section 3.

In his response, chairman of the panel, Ihekire, a former Judge in Gambia, urged those that would be invited in the course of the job to oblige the committee.

Anunihu subsequently swore in other members one after the other.

The chairman said every sitting would be done in the Conference hall, urging the media to ensure accurate and unhindered coverage of the proceedings.

Why I donated 2 Prado Jeeps to 2Face - Akpabio

THE Governor of Akwa Ibom, Sir Godswill Akpabio has defended his donations and hospitality to individuals, churches and organisations against the backdrop of criticism of such, disclosing that the donations had been captured in Akwa Ibom State’s budget so passed by House of Assembly.

Akpabio made this known during a chat with Government House correspondents in Uyo, as he condemned what he termed ‘’bad press’’ by a section of the media.

He said,“I have noticed a lot of attacks in the media particularly the social media and some of the newspapers have started writing editorials on the Governor of Akwa Ibom and trying to create impression that because he made a donation of a Jeep to one of his daughters, Mrs Anne Macauley-2face that got married recently, that means he is wasteful. Of course, that kind of allegation is far from the truth”.

He dismissed speculations over his donation of Prado Jeep and sponsorship of 20 family members of Annie Macauley- Idibia worth N3 million for their wedding in Dubai, saying that such donations had been captured in the yearly budget usually passed by Akwa Ibom House of Assembly.

Obadare died after three-day revival programme – Church

Founder of the Soul Winning Evangelical Ministry, the Late Prophet Timothy Obadare, died two days after a three-day revival aimed at ending the 23-year-old crisis within the Christ Apostolic Church was concluded, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt on Saturday.

Our correspondent also learnt that the Re-unification and Reconciliation Committee set up by the pastors of the two warring factions within the church organised the revival which started last Sunday and ended on Tuesday at CAC, Oke Isegun, Akure, Ondo State.

The late evangelist died on Thursday evening at the age of 85 in Akure after a protracted ailment.

It was further gathered that pastors, officers and members of the two factions attended the revival where they all asked for restoration of unity within the CAC fold in order to move the church forward.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, one of its coordinators, Pastor Tunde Omojuwa, who confirmed the development in an interview with our correspondent in Akure, however lamented that efforts being made to unite the factions were still being rebuffed by some leaders of the church.

He noted that the time had come for the leaders of both the Supreme Executive Council and the General Executive Council to come together and settle their differences in the interest of the church.

He explained that the revival in Akure was organised following the renewed zeal of the two factions to ensure that the crisis was resolved.

Omojuwa who is also the chairman of the Akure District Coordinating Council said, “The unity revival we held in Akure came up as a result of the new development in the church. Some pastors called on the leaders to put an end to the crisis that has divided the church for over 23 years.

“It was on that note that a group was formed and it is called Re-unification and Restoration Group. Everybody is now concerned as to how the church should come together.

“What we think can bring a lasting peace to our divided church is that they should put away bitterness and come together, the church is not really having problem, it is the leadership.

“Today churches in Supreme Council don’t have anything to do with General Executive Council, this should be put aside so that the church can come under one leadership, this is what we expect and this we have been telling the leaders they should put an end to.

“It was in the process of finding a solution at the revival that he died.”

Igbo unite for Achebe

THE death of literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe, appears to have offered the Ndigbo another opportunity to come together following a resolution by the governments of the zone to put heads together with a view to giving him a befitting burial, anytime the date was announced.

Reports pieced together indicate that although Achebe was never a politician, political office holders in the zone, including members of the National Assembly, would rally forces to give the literary guru an iconic burial given his contributions to the promotion of Igbo culture through many of his literary works.

The governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, who is currently outside Nigeria, is said to have mooted the idea during his chat with some of his close friends from the zone in the National Assembly, and on the grounds that Achebe’s burial would offer another scope for Igbo politicians to speak with one voice again on national issues.

More Nigerians mourn Achebe

His death shocking - Amaechi
RIVERS State governor and chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Rt Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed shock and sadness over the passing of renowned writer, Professor Chinua Achebe.

Amaechi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr David Iyofor, described Achebe as one of Nigeria and Africa’s finest literary giants whose works spoke volumes.

Amaechi recalled his fond memories of Achebe, including his play, A Man of the People, which is the governor’s favourite work by the writer.

“I love and have read A Man of the People over and over again, mostly because of its portrayal of leadership as it is in Africa. I have also commissioned that a movie be made out of it for the benefit of more people, especially our youths who are the leaders of tomorrow.  It is such a shock to me that our dearly beloved Achebe, the man who gave us several notable works of literature is gone.”

His death, a re-awakening to mortality - Oduah
NIGERIA’S Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, has described the death of the literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe, as a re-awakening to  mortality for us all.

Oduah, who said the death of Achebe  came to her as a rude shock, however, added  that unlike other mortals the late Achebe attained some immortality of sorts through his ground-breaking literary prowess.

“Though dead in body and flesh, Professor Achebe lives forever not only in our hearts and minds, but also in the literary sub-conscious of the entire world which read one piece from the iconic writer, and waited in bated breath for the next. His last epistle There was a Country is the crowning of a glowing career in Arts and Literature that will continue to captivate and inspire generations the world over.

“By his passing, Nigeria has lost a consummate patriot. To the world, a literary colossus has fallen. But Nigeria and the world cannot be crestfallen by his death. His life and works remain not only a source of pride to all,but also a poignant indicator of the fertility of the human imagination.
Through his works of fiction, Achebe painted indelible portraits of the precariousness of the human existence, and brought meaning and reality to our daily lives.

He lived what he preached - Tinubu
Former governor of Lagos State and national leader, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Senator Bola Tinubu, yesterday, described the death of Achebe as the loss of yet another national treasure who died unfulfilled in his dream to see a  better governed, fully demorcratic and united Nigeria.
“Achebe’s words were like the arrows of God penetrating the fortresses of our leaders and striking their hearts to do good, unfortunately not many hearkened, and that is why we remain stuck as a people and a country”.

Tinubu said notwithstanding his exploits on the literary stage and his world acclaimed status, Achebe had one regret and that was the failure of successive Nigerian leadership to birth a new country and liberate Nigerians from abject poverty and want. “Chinua Achebe lived an exemplary life of sacrifice and excellence. He was a critique-general who through his writings offered lucid suggestions and advice on how Nigeria’s problems can be tackled. We are able to glean from his writings a burning desire for change and a crushing devotion to the emancipation of the larger society”.

According to Tinubu, Achebe’s writings would stand the test of time, but more importantly, his books, essays and commentaries would stand as ringing indictments to all the Nigerian leaders, nay Africa, who failed to liberate their people from the shackles of want, poverty and unfreedom.

The former governor said Nigeria had a lot to offer, not just the world but her citizens, but unfortunately, “the best, the brightest and selfless amongst us are often shoved aside. Our loss has been the gain of other countries.
“The world recognised and elevated him for the brilliance of his writings and his seminal interventions, while the Nigerian government treated him like an irritant and one of the pesky activists. We may do more to immortalise Achebe, but he is already immortalised through his writings,” he said.

Tinubu recalled how Achebe’s life and writings touched many and mentored several. “In my personal encounters with him, his simplicity, his forthrightness and his engaging personality struck me. Achebe and his writings were one and the same. He lived what he preached.

Though he elicits different reactions from different people, Achebe’s love for his people and his patriotism was unquestionable. His devotion to creating a better society was resolute”.

Finally, Tinubu said Nigeria must listen and recognize our best minds and not waste them. Achebe was primus inter pares, a social crusader, the conscience of our nation and we celebrate him rather than mourn him.

Achebe was a beacon of light that drew people to UNN
Management, staff and students of the University of Nigeria have described the death of Professor Achebe as a loss to the academic world.

“Professor Achebe was one of the academic titans whose presence in the university served as a beacon of light that drew the world to UNN. He taught in the Department of English as well as carried out researches at the Institute of African Studies.

After the epochal Things Fall Apart that gave a voice to African literature and its people, Achebe continued his pioneering endeavours with the founding of Okike, a foremost journal of African literature that birthed the careers of many distinguished writers. His work in leading researches into the cultures of the Igbo and various groups in the Institute of African Studies further cemented the reputation of the University of Nigeria as a centre of liberal learning in the best traditions.

Achebe in his work gave to the language, culture and people of Igbo land a universality that positioned it as one of the major ethnic groups of human civilisation.

The University of Nigeria commiserates with his family, the global literary and academic communities and all mankind on the loss of our distinguished former faculty member. Flags in the university will fly at half-mast while UNN will unfold a programme to honour Achebe and would be privileged to partake in all activities aimed at honouring this truly distinguished giant and contributor to the human race.

Nigeria has lost a global literary and cultural icon - NLC
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said, on Saturday, that in the death of Chinua Achebe, Nigeria had lost a global literary and cultural icon, a foremost nationalist and father of African literature.

In a statement signed by the NLC acting president, Comrade Promise Adewusi, the congress described Chinua Achebe as a colossus who bestrode the literary world, and set the tone and direction of African literature, capturing the total African experience from pre-colonial and colonial periods through decolonisation and its discontents to national disillusionment and alienation.

The NLC said; “Although better known for his novels, Achebe was an unusual master craftsman who distinguished himself in all the genres of literature. He was an essayist, poet, playwright and critic who was unrelenting in his criticism against injustice, oppression, corruption and other vices in the society. He captivated the world with his simple narrative as well as inspired generations of African writers who took pride in their cultures.”

“Achebe was a principled man and an unignorable moral force known for his quiet rebuke of bad governance through his gestures. He did not speak often but whenever he did, it resonated through the nation. He was a critic who offered prescriptions for national rebirth, firmly holding accountable poor leadership as the genesis of Nigeria’s problems.
