Bishop David Oyedepo Launches A New Airline

Nigeria’s richest pastor and self-styled bishop, David Oyedepo, has made a glistening addition to his business empire by floating an airline called Dominion Air.
Oyedepo, who a few years ago ignited debate on flamboyant Christianity by acquiring his fourth private jet, is the owner of Dominion Publishing House, Covenant University and an elite secondary school called Faith Academy.
Listed by Forbes as Nigeria’s wealthiest pastor with a net worth of $150 million, David Oyedepo is a preacher and founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, more popularly known as Winners’ Chapel. Besides his four private jets, Forbes also mentioned the preacher’s luxury homes in London and the United States.
Sources within the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the agency charged with business registration in Nigeria, confirmed the registration of Dominion Air with David Oyedepo as its chairman. Another source within a Lagos-based insurance firm known to handle most of Oyedepo’s businesses said the airline project had been in the works for six years and was only made a reality this year.

In a swift reaction, Lawrence Ofili, a member of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), “Pastor Oyedepo by his choice of businesses has severally demonstrated a disconnect between himself and hundreds of thousands of poor Christians who he claimed to have come to deliver. About 90 per cent of public schools in this country were built by early Christian missionaries; today Oyedepo has Covenant University but it is for children of millionaires,” says Mr Ofili.

“Even with the high school called Faith Academy, I am aware that most children in his congregation dream to be educated there but their parents who probably pay tithes and offerings cannot afford the school fees. His Faith Tabernacle accommodates 50,000 worshippers every Sunday; how many of them are going to fly Dominion Air? Honestly this project is not for the poor. He should have settled for mechanised farming to engage unemployed men and women.”

Tonto Dikeh's Ex-Boyfriend Who Broke Her Heart

According to reports:

Quote
Tonto Dikeh a few days back poured her heart out on Twitter, sharing a recent heartbreak she suffered (See it HERE). I've been digging (yes, it's my business lol) and finally found out the guy who broke the star's heart. His name is Caporahvenwah Okolie, popularly known as Chief Capo (pictured above with Tonto).

Chief Capo is an international model, rapper, singer and the CEO of G-Muzik Entertainment. He shuttles between his home in Atlanta and the one here in Nigeria.

Capo and Tonto have been dating quietly off and on since 2010 after he relocated to Nigeria that year to set up his music business. His mum is South African and his dad is Igbo. See more after the cut..

Don't know for sure what led to their break up but insiders claim it had something to do with 'other women'

"2G (Capo) always has a lot of attractive females around him because he's rich and very good looking and Tonto wasn't comfortable with it and basically couldn't handle it anymore. They would fight all the time about it and she also recently caught him with another woman which is what caused the breakup. I know they are both heart broken and miss each other, and yes it is true he did write and record the song Booski Lover for her." The insider told me

Sina Rambo and B-Red had a nasty fight with Davido

New day, new drama. Entertainment website THE NET is reporting that Davido's cousins and label mates- Sina Rambo and B-Red had a nasty fight with their more popular cousin in Atlanta.

According to THE NET's story, the reason for the family feud stemmed from Sina Rambo and B-Red believing that Davido was doing little to promote their works and was intentionally releasing singles and music videos to overshadow their singles.

"Sources tell us a big fight  allegedly ensued between Davido and cousins B Red and Sina Rambo some weeks back in Atlanta – The cousins had accused Davido of not doing much for their careers as much as he should after they chose him as the label’s front line act. They also accused him of not giving them a chance to fully promote their new singles only to overshadow them at any given chance."- THE NET.

The fight between the cousins was physical which led to properties being damaged in their Atlanta home. Davido left his cousins in Atlanta to perform alongside Nas in Houston. After his performance he flew straight to Nigeria leaving B-Red and Sina Rambo stuck in Atlanta. B-Red is back in the country, Sina however is still in Atlanta.

B-Red who is Davido's hype man hasn't been with him on stage in his last couple of shows. He was also conspicuously absent at Davido's mum's remembrance. After the clash, B-Red and Sina Rambo are planning on leaving HKN.

B-Red and Sina Rambo are the sons of Davido's father's senior brother. Sina Rambo released his debut single 'Ijo Sina' featuring Davido last October. B-Red dropped his introductory single 'Insane Girl' featuring Davido in February.

Not long after that, Davido was seen partying with Wizkid in Lagos

Torrents of tributes pour for Chinua Achebe

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Friday that late Prof. Chinua Achebe will be greatly missed for his immense patriotism and sincere commitment to a better Nigeria.

“President Jonathan received with immense sadness, news of the passing away of Nigeria’s globally acclaimed `writer, scholar, tutor, cultural icon, nationalist and artist of the very first rank’’, said Reuben Abati, the special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity.

“The president believes that Prof. Achebe’s frank, truthful and fearless interventions in national affairs will be greatly missed at home in Nigeria While others may have disagreed with his views, most Nigerians never doubted his immense patriotism and sincere commitment to the building of a greater, more united and prosperous nation that all Africans and the entire black race could be proud of.

Jonathan’s tribute was among the torrents of tributes that poured forth globally for the literary icon, who died early Friday in the US at the age of 82.
In Nigeria, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Achebe as an icon of “unmatched integrity and conviction’’.

Abubakar’s paid glowing tribute to Achebe’s unquantifiable contributions to African literature.

According to him, Things Fall Apart, Achebe’s international award winning literary work would remain his everlasting legacy to literature.

“The translation of Things Fall Apart into more than 100 languages of the world had put not only Nigeria but also Africa on the map, thanks to Achebe’s literary prowess,’’ Abubakar said.

He recalled how Achebe forcefully rejected and condemned the July 2004 political crisis in Anambra during which thugs attempted to remove a democratically elected governor on the orders of a godfather.

He said the late professor rejected a national honours conferred on him by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan administrations based on his convictions and principle.

He said that few Nigerians would have followed the courage of their conviction and rejected national honours because of the fear of losing favour from those in power.

The Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, said of Achebe “He directed attention to early Christianity in Nigeria through his book, Things Fall Apart”.

“For Nigerians and Africans we are greatly indebted to him for his great contribution to African Literature.

Also in a tribute, Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga tweeted: “I send my condolences to the people of Nigeria and the family of Chinua Achebe.

“We have lost a great son and the `Father of African Literature’.’’

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state said Nigeria had lost a literary giant with the death of Achebe.

“On behalf of the people and government of Edo State, I wish to commiserate with the Governor and the good people of Anambra State on the death of the literary giant, Prof. Chinua Achebe,’’ he said.

“With Achebe’s death, Anambra and indeed Nigeria has lost a major personality, who played a unique role in its modern history. Even as an intellectual giant, his voice resonated with clarity and authoritative distinction on matters of national interest.

“He was a remarkable personality, and will always be remembered for his forthrightness and incisive contributions to national issues. He could not be ignored or taken for granted on any matter, even by those who disagreed with him.

“His death evokes nostalgic emotion in the minds of all who read his books. His epic novel, “Things Fall Apart” which earned him the sobriquet, `Father of modern African literature’’’

Also reacting, Mr Mike Omeri, Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), described Achebe’s death as shocking and a great loss.

Omeri said in a statement that the late literary icon was a symbol of Nigeria’s rich human resource from which the whole world benefited.

“The death of Achebe is shocking; to hear that such a man whose wealth of knowledge, experience and insight that would have benefited the nation more at this transformational moment is a great loss,’’ he said.

From Umuahia, Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia state expressed grief over the death of Achebe, and said that he was yet to come to terms with the news of the death.

He described Achebe as a literary icon, a legend of all times and a hero whose novels remained a reference point in and out of the country.

“Achebe made positive impact on humanity through his novels,’’ he said, adding that the late icon would be remembered for standing up for Ndi Igbo at all times in spite of all odds. (NAN)

Political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi said Achebe had earned immortality through his works, but should be further immortalised.

“Achebe’s book, ‘Things Fall Apart’’ is recognized as one of the extraordinary books ever written. Achebe, through his writings, was one of the first to capture the leadership problem with Nigeria and today, it has become prophetic as Nigeria stumbles through leadership issues,” Utomi said.

An Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, urged the government to name a national monument after Achebe.

“A national monument, preferably a university, should be named after him, so that Nigerian youths will appreciate the value of education,” Ohaneze’s spokesman, Mr Tonnie Oganah, said.

The Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party said Achebe should be given a state burial and a posthumous national award. “His contributions to nation building, education and particularly literature, will remain immortal,” the party’s spokesman, Mr Taoffik Gani, told NAN.

The President, Igbo Youth Congress (IYC), Mr Bright Ezeocha, called for three-day mourning for the late don in the South-East states.

Afenifere’s spokesman, Mr Yinka Odumakin, noted that Achebe’s book — “The trouble with Nigeria’’, identified the issues still bedevilling the nation.

“It is unfortunate that Nigeria has not tapped into his wisdom and knowledge.”

Human rights lawyer, Mr Bamidele Aturu, who described Achebe as a forthright and courageous man, said:“The younger generation has a lot to learn from Achebe’s courage and convictions.

“He was a voice against corruption, mediocrity and ignorance and expresses his opinion no matter whose ox is gored,” he said.

Nigeria’s first female Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, also described the Late Achebe as a man who loved his country dearly. Until his death, he was serving as a distinguished professor at Brown University, an Ivy League school in Rhode Island, United States.

Alele, a professor of Mathematics, who was Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin, said the late writer would be remembered for putting the name of Nigeria on the map, through his literary works.

According to her, Achebe loved his country and wrote boldly about happenings, not minding whether people liked it or not.

“We were classmates in University College, Ibadan, in 1949; we got our first degree in 1953. It was wonderful to be a classmate of a hardworking man like him, who put Nigeria on the global map.

A former Education Minister, Mrs Chinwe Obaji, told NAN that the late novelist touched so many lives literarily, and was able to shape the minds of Nigerians, both the young and old.

“The death of this great scholar is a blow to the nation and the world at large; we take consolation in the fact that he was able to leave some legacy before his demise.

“He is a Nigerian known all over the world for good, by virtue of his intellect.

Obaji noted that through his literary work, especially `Things Fall Apart’, Achebe foretold happenings in Nigeria, and that many of his projections were manifesting in the country.

The National President , Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Isa Fagge, also said the demise of the foremost novelist, was “a colossal loss to the academic community’’.

He said Achebe would always be remembered for his contributions to the development of the education sector of the country.

“Here was an icon who had written a lot and achieved many feats, enlightening a lot of people within and outside the country. His demise is indeed a very painful and sad loss to us as academia and as Nigerians; may his great and gentle soul rest in peace,” he prayed.

Prof. Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), described the passage of the literary icon as a huge loss to the nation and the academic world.

“Achebe will be sorely missed by the entire world, because he touched the lives of many literarily. He will remain evergreen in the hearts of old and young alike, for generations yet to come”.

Achebe’s most famous book, “Things Fall Apart”, has been translated into over 50 languages and is rated among the best in the world. Achebe, an indigene of Ogidi, a village in Anambra, was born on Nov.16, 1930.

Why Rape Is On The Increase —Lagos PPRO

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, has blamed unwillingness by some rape victims and their parents to prosecute the case for the increase of the crime in Nigeria.

She said this in Lagos on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

She said, “as long as rape victims and their parents refuse to show interest in prosecuting the case, the offenders will go scot free and more of such crime will happen.

“The victims of rape or defilement are the main witnesses the police need to send the offenders to prison.

“The case is a serious offence under Nigerian law. An offender could be sentenced to life imprisonment if found guilty.

“We have many people who should be behind bars for violent crimes against women.

“But because the people concerned are not willing to come forward to assist the police in prosecution, they are walking freely and even committing more of such crime.

“If offenders are not punished, many others will be bold to commit such a crime.

“It is unpardonable for a man to defile his underage daughter. Such experience will remain in the mind of the child for ever. Such a man should be punished as deterrent to others.

“The problem we have is that the same people that reported the case to the police would still turn around to settle with the offender.

“Some women, whose daughters were raped or defiled by their husbands, are the ones pleading for their release. In this case, what do you want the police to do?” Braide queried.

The PPRO called on parents, particularly women, to show concern and stand behind their wards to prosecute rape offenders.

She stressed that if the crime remained unchallenged, there would be the possibility of its increase.

She disclosed further that about four cases of rape and defilement by some men against their daughters were recorded since she assumed duty in Lagos command in the last nine months, and nobody had been prosecuted.

“Parents should know that they are not helping their children by accepting to settle out of court.

“They are killing the future of such children. You cannot quantify the pains encountered by the victims with monetary settlement.

“My advice for women is that they should rise to fight any form of abuse against women, particularly rape and defilement.

“The victims and the minors cannot help themselves; their parents must therefore stand for them.

“The police is willing to prosecute any case if those with useful information about the case would be willing to come forward with evidence,” Braide added.

Cattle traders at Karra Market get quit notice

The government of the western Nigerian state of Ogun has handed a final quit notice to cattle traders and other illegal dwellers at the Isheri-Karra Cattle Market on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Lanre Tejuoso, made this known on Friday during a visit to the market.

He said that the notice was a demonstration of the government’s determination to sanitise the place and ensure that the cattle traders moved to the permanent site already approved for them.

He said the current location was an “an eyesore” to visitors to the state, adding that the government could no longer tolerate the nuisance it constituted.

“If you are coming from Lagos, you would see beautiful scenery. In fact a cynosure of all eyes until you get to Berger, the boundary between Lagos and Ogun. After Berger is the Karra Market and what you see is nothing but an eyesore.

“The movement of the traders from the market is pertinent in order to provide good scenery that carves a new image and perception for the state,” Tejuoso said.

The commissioner said that the government had provided a new site for the cattle market over a year ago, adding that it would be provided with a good road network and other infrastructure

Tejuoso said that issuance of the quit notice was necessitated by the refusal of the cattle traders to willingly move to the new site. He warned that anybody who contravened the order would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.

MTN fined N90m by NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has asked MTN to pay N90 million fine, about $500,000, for non compliance with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Mr Tony Ojobo, the Director Public Affairs of the commission, while briefing newsmen on Friday in Abuja, said the network provider had failed to meet the standard KPIs set for service providers by the commission.

He said that in 2012, it was agreed with service providers that there would not be any sanction till after six months when the commission would have carried out its drive test. Ojobo explained that the drive test was to enable the commission to read if the operators were complying with the indicators.

“In Dec. 2012, NCC carried out the drive test and it was discovered that MTN did not meet the compliance of the KPIs and therefore we have to sanction the service provider.’’

He assured that the MTN would pay N90 million for failing to meet the KPIs as set by the commission, adding that all other outstanding fines had been paid.

Ojobo said that Etisalat, Globacom and Airtel met the set standard except the MTN, saying that the commission had given the service provider up to April 3, to pay up the fine.

The director also said that the earlier date fixed for the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) launch in March 25, would not be possible due to the fact that the equipment were undergoing final testing.

“MNP operator are ready and set, they are just fine tuning their equipment for final testing which will affect the target date. The operators request for additional three weeks to complete testing. The MNP launch hopefully will now take place April 4.’’

Ojobo said that the commission had started an awareness campaign on various media organisations adding, “there is the need for the public to know the essence and the benefits of MNP and how to access it.’’

On the control emergency centres, he also said that the commission was finalising the test running of the two pilot emergency centres in Mina and Akwa, saying that the control emergency number for the country was 112.

Ojobo said that 18 other pilot emergency centres were still ongoing testing, saying that Mina would be controlling the North while Akwa would do same for the South.

“The commission will soon launch the two pilot emergency centres. What is delaying the launch are policy issues.’’

Nigeria Vs Kenya Tie: Eagles Target Early Goals

Media Officer of Nigeria’s Super Eagles,  Ben Alaiya, has said  that the team have been given an order to go for early goals when they meet the Harambee Stars of Kenya in a 2014 World Cup qualifier at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar, Cross River tomorrow.

Alaiya said the plan of Coach Stephen Keshi is to use the early goals to unsettle the East African team who have been boasting of their readiness to upset the African champions in the crucial tie.

The veteran sports journalist hinted that the technical crew of the Eagles is targeting early goals in order to rattle their opponents because failure to score them early may give Kenya the confidence that may hamper Eagles’ chances in the match.

Giving insight into the likely line up of the Eagles in tomorrow’s match,  Alaiya disclosed that he expects returnee Obafemi Martins who play Major League Soccer, MLS’s Seattle Sounders and Dynamo Kiev of Ukraine striker, Brown Ideye to lead the team’s onslaught against Kenya.

According to him, “from all indications I hope to see Martins and Ideye in the Eagles’ attack and you know when you have a pair like that it means the coaches want early goals in the match.”

Martins is also looking forward to optimism and high expectations.

“There is no small team anywhere in the world, but we will give our best against Kenya and hopefully we can win.”

West Ham Move To Britain’s Olympic Stadium

West Ham United football club are to become the main tenants of London’s Olympic Stadium, the BBC reported on Friday ahead of an official announcement expected later in the day.

The long-term future of the £429 million ($648-million, 503-million-euro) venue in Stratford, east London, was supposed to have been decided before last year’s Games but a series of legal challenges have led to a drawn-out process.

The BBC said the British government have agreed to put in an extra £25 million towards the cost of converting the venue, taking their total spend to £60 million with the final bill for adapting the venue potentially reaching £190 million in all.

However, the deal was secured only after Premier League West Ham agreed to increase their own funding of the project by £5 million to £15 million, the broadcaster said, without quoting sources.

The Hammers will move from their current Upton Park ground in east London from August 2016 and pay around £2 million a year in rent.

Under conversion plans, the roof will be extended and the seating capacity reduced from 80,000 to 60,000, with a retractable system allowing the venue to be converted from an athletics arena to football stadium within days.

Having a stadium capable of staging a major athletics event after the Olympics was a key component of London’s bid for the Games.

It is already scheduled to stage the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

Father of African literature’ Chinua Achebe dies aged 82

Nigerian novelist and poet Chinua Achebe, who first made his mark with 1958 novel Things Fall Apart, has reportedly died aged 82 .

Reports from Nigeria suggest he died this morning at a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts of an undisclosed ailment.

Sources quoted in the Premium Times said he had been unwell for some time and was hospitalised earlier this week.

The unnamed source declined to release further information but said the family would issue a statement later today.

Right up until his death Achebe worked as Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University and was the David and Marianna University Professor.

Attempts to contact Brown University for comment have not been successful.

Achebe is known as the "father of modern African literature", and made his name writing about the history of Nigeria.

Things Fall Apart, set amid 1890s Nigeria and the influx of Christian missionaries, is renowned the world over, has been translated into 50 languages and has sold more than 10 million copies.

The novel takes its title from WB Yeats's 1919 poem "The Second Coming": "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world…”

In 2007 Achebe won the Man Booker International Prize for his “overall contribution to fiction on the world stage”.

Nelson Mandela called him "the writer in whose company the prison walls came down", and credited him as the author who "brought Africa to the rest of the world"

Achebe's other novels include Arrow of God (1964); A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987). He has also published four children's books (including Chike and the River and How the Leopard Got His Claws), short stories and poetry in English and Igbo.

His 1975 lecture An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' is still available in paperback from Penguin Classics. In it, he says that "Joseph Conrad was a thoroughgoing racist" and points out that there are only six words spoken by Africans in the whole of Heart of Darkness.

Achebe was born in Ogidi, Anambra State, on November 16, 1930. At the age of 12 he moved several kilometres away from his family to Nekede to attend the Central School there before attending Government College Umuahia for his secondary school education.

He was one of the first students to attend the University College, now University of Ibadan in 1948. Having first opted to study medicine he switched to English, history and theology after his first year.

After winning his degree Achebe taught at Ibadan before joining the Nigeria Broadcasting Service in 1954.

He met his wife Christie Okoli while in Lagos and the couple married in 1961 going on to have four children.

During the Nigeria Civil War Achebe joined the Biafran Government as an ambassador. He wrote about his experiences in his last book, There Was A Country.

MP David Lammy wrote on Twitter this morning: "RIP Chinua Achebe.Wonderful writer and campaigner who said "One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised."
