UN Secretary General condoles death of Bangla President

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, expressed his condolences to the people of Bangladesh today after the death of President Zillur Rahman.

"The Secretary-General was saddened by the death of Zillur Rahman, President of Bangladesh since 2009, who made important contributions to the country's democratic transition throughout his political life," said an UN official.

President Mohammad Zillur Rahman, a close aide of the country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, died yesterday at a Singapore hospital where he was being treated for kidney and respiratory problems at the age of 85.

Rahman was admitted to the facility on March 10 after he was flown to Singapore by an air ambulance for critical lung infection, a day after he was rushed to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) at Dhaka cantonment.

Bangladesh has announced a three-day state mourning.

Discovery of 6,000 ghost workers sparks controversy in Ondo

The state government claims it has been augmenting local government salaries.

The recent discovery of 6,000 ghost workers in the 18 local councils of Ondo State has remained shrouded in controversy, with the state government withholding salaries of local council workers.

The Ondo State Government last year set up a staff audit committee to investigate the irregularity in the recruitment exercise carried out at the local governments from December 2008 to December 2012.

Three months after the committee was set up, it came out with a shocking revelation.

The government in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Rotimi Adelola, said “the discovery (was made) of monumental fraud in phantom recruitment exercise carried out at the local councils where unauthorised recruitment of unqualified workers or none existing individuals whose names are being used to deduct salaries from the local government’s accounts on monthly basis were discovered.”

Mr. Adelola said the committee, in the course of its investigation, discovered over 6,000 junior workers and about 4,000 senior workers recruited between December 2008 and December 2012 without following due process.

The SGF held that before “any recruitment could be done at the local government level, the express approval of the state governor should be sought and the local government chairmen should consider if they have the fund to pay the wages of such new recruits.”

Bur the audit report was done in a hurry without proper documentation, sources say.

Some of the people the report claimed were ghost workers are senior officers who may retire any moment from now.

One of such officers is the state chairman of National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Ayo Omoreighe, who has been declared as one of the ghost workers.

But the state government insisted that the workers stated in the report were those who have been collecting salaries illegally from the state government.

The SSG said those who connived with these workers to dupe government will be prosecuted at the appropriate time.

“Such act is criminal and we will not spare anybody caught”, he said

This development has forced the state government to suspend the salaries of local government workers since January.

Although the workers are lamenting, the state government said it would not pay the backlog of salaries until ghost workers uncovered are flushed out of the system.

The state government claimed it has been augmenting local government salaries in the last two and half years with a sum of N500, 000 monthly.

Bosco Ntaganda, Alleged War Criminal, Surrenders in Africa

United Nations officials today welcomed the surrender of rebel leader Bosco Ntaganda, who is wanted by an international court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including recruiting children, murder and rape.

According to media reports, Mr. Ntaganda walked into the United States Embassy in Rwanda yesterday and turned himself in, and asked to be transferred to the International Criminal Court ( ICC ) in The Hague in the Netherlands.

"The surrender of Bosco Ntaganda and his early transfer to the ICC will help advance the peace process in the DRC," said Roger Meece, the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in DRC ( MONUSCO ). "It will also send a strong signal to other human rights offenders that they are not beyond justice."

In a news release , the mission also welcomed the decision of the US to transfer him to the ICC, which has indicted him on seven counts of war crimes and three counts of crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Ituri province between 2002 and 2003. He is accused of being responsible for the use of children in armed conflict and acts of murder, rape and sexual slavery.

The Secretary-General's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui, called for the swift transfer of Mr. Ntaganda to the ICC -- the first permanent international court set up to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.

"For years, Ntaganda and armed elements under his command have ravaged eastern Congo, killing, raping and recruiting children on a large scale," she said, urging that justice be done for these children.

Ms. Zerrougui noted that, as founding member of the M23 rebel movement, Mr. Ntaganda also recruited and used children as bodyguards, porters and for other purposes in last year's rebellion in North Kivu province. These grave violations committed against children resulted in Security Council sanctions against him, including a travel ban and asset freeze.

"The international prosecution will prove that impunity does not prevail for child rights violations and creates an important deterrent for potential perpetrators," she stated.

Zainab Hawa Bangura, the Secretary-General's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, said Mr. Ntaganda's compliance with the indictments "should serve as a warning to all perpetrators of sexual violence in conflict that justice may be delayed, but it cannot be denied."

"Impunity for these crimes will not be accepted, and the International Criminal Court will ensure the survivors of Mr. Ntaganda's reign of terror in Ituri will finally see justice served," she added.

Kidnappers Of ACN’s Leader Demand N30 Million In Foreign Currency

Mr Nwike was said to have being abducted in Anambra State on Tuesday.

ACN in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, claimed Mr Nwike’s younger brother, who has established contact with the kidnapper was given the ransom.

”We appeal to the security agencies to do everything within their power to ensure the safe release of Dr. Nwike” the party stated in its statement while it assured his family of its prayers and support at “this very difficult time.”

Tyra Banks responds to Janet Jackson’s Tweet… 3 years later

This is just so hilarious!

But for real, why has it taken model and former TV show host Tyra Banks three whole years to respond to Janet Jackson’s tweet but more importantly why now?

Of course we know why! Janet Jackson, 46 who’s been off the radar for years now miraculously got hitched to her third husband, Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana in February 2013. Go figure!

It was only right of Banks, 39, to holla at her ‘sister’.

And has Jackson replied Tyra? Of course not!

Why is Ice Prince pointing a gun to his head?

Big question there but don’t fret, the Nigerian top shot rapper is only fooling around…

Ice Prince scared his thousands of fans on social network Instagram and Twitter when he posted a picture where he was pointing a nine-millimeter pistol to his head while in the US.

‘Murder i Wrote…… #MovieShit #DMV‘, he added along with the photo.

A host of concerned comments immediately followed but Ice Prince doused fears when he responded ‘film trick’. He later deleted the photo.

The rapper hit Austin, Dallas last weekend for the South by Southwest (SXSW) film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences going on this March. He is currently in Baltimore but will be heading back to Africa in a minute, for an upcoming concert.

1,585 Nigerians arrested in Norway for drug trafficking

THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Norwegian Intelligence Service have started working on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on effective drug control.

Chairman of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade said that the decision was reached after a meeting with a delegation of Norwegian Police and Custom officials at the agency’s office in Lagos, on Monday.

According to Giade, “we need to enter into a memorandum of understanding to deepen our collaboration with the Norwegian government. Drug trafficking is a common problem and we need to embrace the principle of shared responsibility in addressing it. The technical details will soon be perfected. This will lead to improvement in arrests, prosecution and assets forfeiture.”

No fewer than 1,585 Nigerians were apprehended in Norway between 2000 and 2012 over drug trafficking as disclosed by a visiting team of Norwegian police and customs officials who are currently on a field visit to the country.

According to the leader of the delegation, Mr Kai Holm, the visit is to enhance collaboration with Nigerian authorities in counter narcotic smuggling, money laundering and human trafficking.

“In 2012, we arrested 432 Nigerians in Norway and deported 95 over drug trafficking. We need your help in dealing with the problem of West African criminal networks in Norway. Most Nigerians arrested over drug trafficking are based in Europe. They engage in drug smuggling and launder the money back home” Kai stated.

The NDLEA boss, who condemned the involvement of Nigerians in criminal activities abroad promised to take necessary steps in boosting the image of the country. The steps include effective collaboration in counter narcotics, financial and assets investigation and anti-drug education.

The delegation will spend some days in Nigeria while the details of the memorandum are being worked out.

FG moves to end workers’ strikes over wage increase

THE Federal Government has embarked on a decisive move to stop frequent demands and agitations for salary increase and its attendant industrial actions by Nigerian workers.

To achieve this, the government, on Tuesday, began a move to develop a pay policy for the federal public service.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, and the chairman, Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Chief R. O Egbule, hinted on the determination of the government to develop the policy on Tuesday, even as the SGF declared that the pay policy would save the country from incessant strikes.

Much ado over APC

For some days now, Nigerians have seen subjected to a peculiar drama on the simple matter of a merger of some political parties in the country. The stage for the theatrics was set few weeks ago with a simple statement from the leading opposition parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), led by Bola Tinubu, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) led by Muhammadu Buhari, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and what appears to be a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – that they had merged into a single party, the All Progressives Congress, with the acronym, APC.

No sooner had these parties announced their merger plans than the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) developed a cold, and some of its more rambunctious members began deriding the acronym of the emerging new party, referring to it as a drug PDP does not need, on account of the fact that a pain relieving drug was known by the name, APC, in the past. Some other PDP chieftains preferred to call the new party, Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), the armoured trucks used by security officers in combat situations.

The response of the PDP leadership to the emergence of APC has been quite laughable, as chieftain after chieftain of the ruling party derided the merger and predicted that it would die a sudden death like past attempted mergers of political parties in Nigeria. Although many vocal officials of PDP want Nigerians to believe that the proposed APC is only a housefly trying to dare the PDP sledgehammer, the way the PDP leaders have continued to moan and whine about the coalition merger suggests that the development was not only giving the ruling party a headache, but a very severe migraine that could threaten its happiness and peaceful existence.

Apart from the tantrums of PDP chieftains, what better proof do Nigerians require of their discomfiture at the coming of APC than the way the APC acronym has suddenly become hot cake, with two men suddenly emerging from the blues to claim that they were the first to begin registration process for two political parties with that same acronym! The very first sign that the All Progressives Congress will have to fight a hard battle to retain its name and get registered emerged 22 days after the parties involved in the coalition announced their merger plan.

From the blues, a certain man claimed to have submitted an application for registration of a party to be known as African Peoples Congress, with the same APC acronym, to INEC, before the coalition All Progressives Congress. Since then, this African Peoples Congress has left no one in doubt that it will not let go of the APC acronym. As if that development was not strangely rib-cracking enough, yet another group said it had applied for registration of another political party to be known as All Patriotic Citizens, also with APC as its acronym!

These claims and counter-claims have probably made APC the most sought after acronym for a political party in the world! Although one of the groups, the All Patriotic Citizens has since had a “rethink” on the APC acronym and has elected to withdraw from the battle for the registration of that name, the rush for the registration of parties with the APC acronym smacks of a childish plot by the PDP to frustrate the registration of the opposition coalition party, the All Progressives Congress. This is more so as officials of the hitherto unknown African Peoples Congress (APC) have vowed to take the battle for the APC acronym to court, a move that can achieve nothing other than to stall the registration of the opposition coalition party.

Yet, the African Peoples Congress insists that the matter of the battle for the APC acronym is a constitutional matter! The Acting National Secretary of the party, Mr. Sa’id Balogun, has reportedly vowed to pursue its registration by INEC to “a logical conclusion.” He was reported to have mockingly told a national newspaper that the opposition coalition went on a road show in Borno State and refused to follow the due process for registration of the name of their new political party. According to Sa’id, “it is a pity that the loud-mouthed merger group has met a superior force in the African Peoples Congress (APC), a force which cannot be intimidated or distracted”

His party, he said, has adhered to the constitutional requirement for registration of a party without any road side activism and was ready to participate in the 2015 election. Issues are now being canvassed on the date of submission of application for registration by the African Peoples Congress, and the position of the INEC, which has already been alleged in some quarters to be an ally of the PDP, on this controversy. Clearly, from the aggressive posture of African Peoples Congress against the coalition All Progressives Congress, members of the merger party who say the African Peoples Congress has been floated to frustrate the registration of their coalition party are not likely to be far from the truth.

However, the All Progressives Congress appears not to be losing any sleep over this development as it has said that it followed the procedure for merger, and announced it to the entire country 22 clear days before the African Peoples Congress came up with its gambit. INEC, it said, has also been relating with the coalition party, using that name. Recent reports have also indicated a link between PDP and the African Peoples Congress, as a mailing list the group used to send a statement that there are moves to eliminate its officers is the same used by the Publicity Directorate of PDP. The statement of the African Peoples Congress was also strangely copied to the Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh. A well-known PDP member, Mr. Ugochinyere Ikenga, is also said to have been involved in the formation of African Peoples Congress, although PDP has said that Ikenga is not representing it.

This entire clownish scenario has thrown up memories of the innocuous group, Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) that was used by a ruling government in the past to provide a platform for trying to stop the conduct of a national election, and to challenge its result. The attempt to embroil the registration of the All Progressives Congress in a controversy designed to stall its registration is surprising. It is strange, indeed, that anyone would try to delay the formation and growth of a coalition party because, sooner or later, the new party will be registered, whether as APC or any other name. So, the challenge should not be in the ruling party stopping this registration, but putting up a performance that is clearly superior to what the coalition party can offer.

The strange bedfellows in this coalition already have a difficult task agreeing on a number of issues, including the choice of a flag bearer. The parties are known to lack internal democracy and they have a number of challenges that may not even immediately endear them to the electorate today, if PDP begins to put up a superior performance. So, why this crude and queer effort to stall the registration of the coalition merger party? Why this shenanigan? The Nigerian sky is big enough for all political parties to fly.

Goodluck Jonathan Must be Invited to Washington! By Pius Adesanmi

Dear President Barack Obama,

Greetings. On behalf of the good citizens of the District of Columbia, who, in their infinite wisdom, entrusted me with the Office of the Mayor, I am writing to draw your attention to an issue of urgent municipal importance. Although my aides here in the Mayor’s Office are yet to crosscheck things with Mr. Jay Carney, your Press Secretary, after he issued a curious statement today, I have decided to be proactive by reacting to that extremely disturbing statement.

Mr. President, it would seem that you have convened a prestigious summit between your esteemed self and four Heads of State from the continent of Africa. They have been invited to parley with you in the White House in order to explore avenues of strengthening democracy in Africa. According to the statement released by Mr. Carney, “President Obama looks forward to welcoming President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Joyce Banda of Malawi, and Prime Minister José Maria Pereira Neves of Cape Verde to the White House on Thursday, March 28.” The statement concludes that, “the visit of these four leaders underscores the strategic importance the President places on building partnerships and substantive engagement with sub-Saharan Africa, and our commitment to working with strong and emerging African democracies.”

Mr. President, this is obviously an unmistakable snub of the Nigerian President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who leads a country that prides herself as the giant of Africa. While we understand the fact that your administration needs to send a clear message of zero tolerance for corruption to the Nigerian President, who has acquired a reputation for running Africa’s most corruption-friendly government, we at the Washington City Hall would like to register our disagreement with your decision to exclude the Nigerians from next week’s parley in the strongest possible terms.

Mr. President, we believe that you have not been properly served by your advisers in this matter. We believe that the economic implications of excluding the Nigerians from this parley should have been painstakingly explained to you to help you reach an informed judgment. We believe that the economic wellbeing of a major American city should be more important to your administration than helping the people of one far-flung country in Africa deal with their corruption enabler of a president. At a time when most American city administrations are groaning under budget cuts, at a time when the ability of American cities to deliver basic services to residents is being streamlined to reflect the dire economic circumstances of the times, any opportunity for a massive injection of funds into any American city’s economy ought to be seized with both hands. Your administration is about to deny Washington DC one such fantastic opportunity through the hasty and wrong-headed exclusion of the Nigerian president from the forthcoming parley.

Mr. President, we believe that you are aware of the fact that the President of Nigeria does not travel light to foreign destinations. During meetings of the US Conference of Mayors, my brother Mayor Bloomberg of New York never fails to regale us with stories of the economic boom that New York City receives whenever the Nigerian president comes to town for UN functions. He and his wife are said to travel with a harem of presidential jets – some travel as advance delegations. The plane loads of raw cash and aides create an economic ripple effect. They stay in the best hotels, charter limousines, and spend days in shopping malls since they hardly ever attend the functions they came for.

Mr. President, you are perhaps aware of the fact that the 127th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was hosted by our sister city, Québec City, Canada, from October 21-26, 2012. The word on the street is that the South Africans who arrived in Québec City thinking they had a huge delegation were humbled by the benumbing size of the Nigerian delegation. Almost five months after the event, I can tell you authoritatively, Mr. President, that Québec City, Canada, is still reaping the benefits of the economic boom created by the one-week presence of Nigerian parliamentarians in that city. Need one mention what the city of Dubai in the Middle East benefits from weekly injection of funds by Nigerian officials?

Mr. President, we urge you to seriously reconsider your decision to snub Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. It would be a great idea of you could even invite him ahead of the others so that he and his potentially large delegation could get to spend an extra week here in Washington. If he comes here with two or three jumbo jets, as is his wont, this translates to enormous parking fees for Washington Dulles Airport. He, his wife, and their aides are going to take over major hotels in the city and that would be a tremendous boost for our hospitality services. Our limo rental services are going to benefit immensely from the presence of a Nigerian delegation.

In addition, while Dr and Mrs. Jonathan spend time with you at the White House, two or three planeloads of aides are going to spend all that time in our shopping malls. Furthermore, virtually every member of the large delegation would take the opportunity to do a quick medical checkup. Since they have no medical insurance here, they would naturally be paying cash. Imagine, Mr. President, the possible cash inflow to our medical system in these austere times. We understand that Nigerian officials are fond of German hospitals. This could be an opportunity to showcase the superiority of American medical services to these petro-wealthy Africans.

Mr. President, I could go on and on with details of the economic benefits of having the Nigerians here. Please allow me to say, Mr. President, that for the sake of the economy of Washington, DC, the Nigerian president deserves to be pardoned for pardoning corruption. He is of more economic value to us here than the four African presidents you are hosting combined. I therefore look forward to being able to host him and his lovely wife here at City Hall after their White House event.

Yours sincerely,

John-Smith Budweiser

Mayor of the District of Columbia

Shettima to Pay Dead Teachers’ Families N2m Each

Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, Tuesday pledged to pay N2 million each to the families of the teachers killed by members of the Boko Haram sect in three schools in Maiduguri on Monday.
The governor equally promised a donation of N200,000 to each of the five teachers injured in the attack.

Shettima, who announced this while inspecting the affected schools, said the gesture was not meant as compensation for the dead and surviving victims of the attacks, rather to enable the families to cushion their financial needs, following the demise of their loved ones.

He also announced that government would offset the medical bills of those injured in the attack, as well as cater for those whose condition were critical and required being flown abroad for further treatment.
The governor sympathised with the surviving victims and wished them quick recovery, praying Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal bliss.

He assured them that despite all odds, government would not relent in its efforts to provide sound  education for the citizens, adding the attacks would not in any way discourage government from realising its set goals.

The Principal of Government Secondary School, Mafoni, Malam Babagana Ali, who received the governor, said three men, armed with rifle stormed the school and fired several shots at the direction of two female teachers.

Ali told Shettima that all the victims died on the spot, while the assailants fled the scene before the arrival of security forces.
Meanwhile, residents of Maiduguri have called on the government to unveil effective security strategies to curtail further attacks on both public and private schools.

They expressed fears that if solid measures were not hurriedly adopted to stem the ugly trend, children will be forced to stay at home.

164 Feared Dead in Nigeria Boat Mishap

At least 164 people have died when a wooden boat capsized off the coast of Nigeria.

The boat conveying 166 passengers capsized some 40 nautical miles off Nigerian coast yesterday.

The country's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said only two persons survived from the boat.

The boat was heading to the Central African country of Gabon from Nigeria's town, Oron in the oil-rich Delta region.

The head of NEMA, David Akate said the passengers could be traders.

Odemwingie might buy out WBA deal

Nigeria forward, Peter Odemwingie, could explore the possibility of buying out his contract at English Barclays Premier League club, West Bromwich Albion.

In his latest comment via social media networking website, Twitter, on Tuesday, the 31-year-old stated in a veiled post about his intention to buy out his deal at The Hawthorns.

“I see a free player. A player who buys out his contract soon. Or a retired player. Does he looks like he cares much? They made him not to,” wrote Odemwingie word-for-word.

The forward was actually hinted of Fifa transfer regulation under Article 17 which allows players above the age of 28 to buy out their contract by one of his Twitter followers.

Fifa transfer regulation under Article 17 allows players above 28 years to terminate their contracts two years after signing through a compensation determined by their weekly wage and original transfer fee.

In the summer of 2010, Odemwingie signed a two-year deal with Albion with an option of a third and is now in the third year of his West Brom career.

Odemwingie's latest Twitter comment comes after he had called on the club to sack him.

Odemwingie is scheduled to return to West Brom on Wednesday after a short break in Dubai with his family.

The forward is reportedly faced with another big fine for flouting the club's rules on the use of social media networking websites after hitting out that the English side are out to destroy his career.

The former Bendel Insurance FC man has made just four appearances for West Brom as a substitute since his January deadline day saga when he thought he had been cleared to join Queens Park Rangers.

US Army lieutenant colonel accused of passing nuclear secrets to Chinese mistress

A Hawaii-based US defense contractor is facing charges for giving classified defense information, including top secret information about nuclear weapons, to a 27-year-old Chinese woman that he had a romantic interest in.

Benjamin Pierce Bishop, a 59-year-old Army Reserve lieutenant colonel who works as a civilian employee of a defense contractor at the US Pacific Command, was arrested at the command’s headquarters on Friday. He is scheduled to appear in court this week where a judge will decide whether he will remain locked up throughout his case.

The US District Court in Honolulu is prosecuting the man for an email he sent to the Chinese woman, detailing America’s war plans, nuclear weapons stockpile and the country’s relations with foreign partners. The court also alleges that Bishop told the young woman about the deployment of US strategic nuclear systems and the government’s ballistic missiles detection capabilities, according to the complaint.

The transmission of this information to foreign nationals could cause “serious danger to US national security,” the complaint reads.

Bishop is being charged with one count of deliberately relaying national defense information to someone not qualified to receive it, as well as one count of unlawfully retaining national defense documents. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The defense contractor first met the 27-year-old Chinese national during a conference on international military defense issues in Hawaii. The woman had been living in the US on a student visa. The affidavit notes that the woman “represented to Bishop that she did not want him to disclose classified information to her,” but then “continued over time to question Bishop on matters relating to the subject of his work.” From May 2011 until December 2012, he allegedly relayed classified national defense information to her and became romantically involved with her starting June 2011.

FBI documents submitted Feb. 5 claim that the Chinese woman “tasked Bishop to conduct research for her… regarding what Western nations know about… a particular naval asset of the People’s Republic of China.”

Bishop has also gone to great lengths to keep his relationship with the woman a secret. When he requested leave to visit the woman in the United Kingdom, he changed her surname to make it sound masculine and to hide her identity, court documents state.

Bishop has been appointed with an attorney since he cannot afford to pay for his own defense at this time. After the contractor received his charges on Monday, his attorney, Birney Bervar, told reporters that the man would never intentionally try to put the US in harm’s way.

“Col. Bishop has served this country for 29 years. He would never do anything to harm the United States,” he told reporters.

The case is particularly alarming to the US government, considering that China and the US have long engaged in spying against one another. Last year, China arrested a state security official who was suspected of providing information to the US. The incident was considered the most serious case of espionage since the 1980s.

Court officials have not publicly named the Chinese woman who received information from Bishop, and refer to her as “PERSON 1” in the affidavit.

On Being Beyonce: Can 'Bow Down' Take Down America's Newest Sweetheart?

With more than 118 million records sold worldwide, 17 Grammy awards and an electrifying Super Bowl performance, Beyonce Knowles Carter is the indisputable Queen of Hip-Pop, a hybrid genre of R&B, pop and soul, that she herself created. And while Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga can claim fame, Beyonce can claim it all: fame, fortune, a doting husband, beautiful daughter and the world at her fingertips. The question is why she would compromise it all by releasing a song like "Bow Down"?

The bread and butter of Beyonce's career have been empowering women and girls to embrace their curves, ambition and independence. "Bow Down," Beyonce's first single since the birth of her daughter Blue Ivy seems to undercut many of those messages with its biting, ego-centered, "anti-girl-power" lyrics.

"Bow Down" is the kind of song one might expect from an overzealous starlet trying to make a name for herself, not a megastar. Beyonce should be basking in her recent victories, such as her multi-million dollar Pepsi deal or sold-out concert just three months after giving birth, rather than squabbling with imaginary enemies.

Perhaps the pressure to stay on top and manage it all is finally starting to catch up to her. As any ambitious career woman can attest, going back to work after having a baby while trying to prove you can still do your job is overwhelming. In Beyonce's case, she has to be bigger and better than before. The thing is that she is her only real competition.

If Oprah Winfrey released the equivalent of a song like "Bow Down," we would all be scratching our heads, as it would be antithetical to all she stands for. The same is true for Beyonce. "Bow Down" is a real misstep and not what being an independent, powerful woman is all about.

Archbishop of Canterbury 'prays for those let down by church'

The Archbishop of Canterbury has said he is praying for those "really let down" by the church and its "failure in what we should have done".

A report found a "profoundly negative culture" within the Diocese of Chichester which led to two decades of child protection failures.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby is visiting the West Sussex city as part of his "journey of prayer".

The archbishop will be enthroned in Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday.

Archbishop Welby was represented by Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu at the inauguration of Pope Francis in Rome earlier.
He said it was not a difficult decision to visit Chichester rather than going to the Vatican.

The archbishop said: "This is a central part of my own introduction and inauguration of what I will be doing."

He said he wanted to share times of prayer together with people around the Province of Canterbury.
'Forgive if they can'

In February Robert Coles, a retired priest from Eastbourne, was jailed for eight years for abusing three boys between 1978 and 1984.

In 2012 three former Church of England priests in the diocese were charged with sexual offences against children.

Speaking to the BBC during his visit to Chichester, Archbishop Welby said: "Many [people] have shown extraordinary courage and strength in the face of what the Church has said quite openly was a really severe let down and failure in what we should have done.

"I pray for them to be able to forgive if they can. I don't insist or demand that they do, in fact quite the reverse."

"I pray for their wellbeing in the face of what they've survived."
'Journey in prayer'

The archbishop started his pilgrimage of five cities and six cathedrals in the Province of Canterbury last Thursday in Norwich.

During his pilgrimage he has also visited Coventry, London and Truro.

A Lambeth Palace spokesman said the pilgrimage highlighted his spiritual role and the importance of prayer in Christian life.

More than 3,000 people gathered in the centre of Chichester to greet Archbishop Welby, more than on his visits to the other cities in the tour, church officials said.

He started his visit by greeting the crowd at the Market Cross. with traffic halted in the area.

"I promised to come and it's really important to be here as this is the run-up to my own installation on Thursday," he said.

"It's just a treat to be here."
'I'm not nervous'

The new archbishop's enthronement service will be held in Canterbury Cathedral on Thursday, with 2,000 people invited to attend.

Among the guests will be Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, the prime minister, and archbishops and bishops from around the world.

Representatives of other faiths will also attend.

Archbishop Welby said: "I'm not nervous. I'm very conscious it's going to be a very big day but it's exciting."

The service begins at 15:00 when Archbishop Welby knocks at the cathedral's west door.

Gay Couple Commits Suicide Over Marriage Problem

French acupuncturist and bad star Wilfried Knight committed suicide last week in Vancouver. Prior to his death, he wrote a series of blog posts expressing his frustration over being forced to move to Canada due to his visa expiring and the U.S.’s inability to recognize his marriage to Jerry Enriquez. Enriquez killed himself days earlier on Feb. 21.

The couple were married in Canada in 2011, but upon moving to the U.S., the Defense of Marriage Act prohibited them from being married in the states. This meant Knight was also forbidden from getting a green card sponsored by his husband.

In the blog posts, written before his suicide, Knight explained the ordeal in detail:

"Never mind our commitment, our years together, i was to be thrown out. My partner knew it and decided to look for a job in the only country that would allow us to be together and marry: Canada.

"And i know what most people will say: Why didn’t you guys marry in Washington, or California, or NYC? Well, IF YOU ARE TWO GAY MEN FROM DIFFERENT NATIONALITY, STATE MARRIAGE DOES NOT MATTER, EVEN IF ONE IS AMERICAN: IT NEEDS TO EXIST ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL TO APPLY TO A MULTINATIONAL COUPLE.” (sic)

Knight explained Enriquez obtained a job in Canada at sportwear company Lululemon. They left America to start a life there. But shortly after, Enriquez was fired by the company after a series of events, leaving the couple financially strapped and without employment, a visa, or health insurance.

Five months later, Knight came home to find his husband dead after he did not answer his texts.

“He had it well prepared. When i came back home worried for not receiving any answer to my texts, i found him there..hanging. I since then discovered the poor guy was on clonazepam and zoplicone to cope with the stress..which he had left there on the side with a bottle of wine he had purchased that morning…Which simply seemed aimed at me, in a way saying: “follow me and see you on the other side’.”
