Photos: Hundreds Strip Off For No Pants Day

Yesterday, subway riders around the world “debriefed” for the annual No Pants Subway Ride—a yearly prank where people ride the subway “pants-free” while keeping a straight face.
From Stockholm to Mexico City, hoards of commuters left their pride at the door & let their drawers do the walking.
In Mexico City, hundreds of people also took off all but their smalls to take part in the “No Pants Subway Ride” – just for laughs – around the world.
Young and old, men, women and children got in on the 12th annual round of the prank held once a year in 50 cities, the well-ventilated movement said on its website.
It was the third time people in Mexico City lost their trousers and skirts to partake in the underground underwear fun.

Fate Of Pregnant Prisoners

INMATES having babies in prison is a global phenomenon defying solutions.  Authorities of Port Harcourt Prisons are denying warders were responsible for the pregnancies. In the United States, where some prison officials have been convicted for their roles in sexual abuse of prisoners, more than 25 per cent of inmates get pregnant while serving their term.
Arguments of an official of Port Harcourt Prisons, that in all cases the women arrived pregnant, are unattainable.  They are too dumbfounding that they leave no room for important prison reforms. What can be done about pregnant prisoners? How can general prison conditions be improved? Do we ever worry that children born in prison without adequate care could become criminals?
More concern in other places centre on better treatment for children born in prison. There are no easy solutions. Even in USA where six States -  California, Connecticut, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York and Washington – permit “conjugal visits” to aid family bonding, the visits have partly been blamed for the pregnancies, there are no firm plans for the children. Do we punish children too for their mothers’ offences?
File photo: The Kaduna Central Prison in the early hours of Tuesday.
File photo: The Kaduna Central Prison.
Current conditions in Nigerian prisons are deplorable. The food is poor; the quantity is not enough for healthy living, worse for pregnant inmates. The hygiene levels are abysmally low. It is almost unthinkable that children are born in these settings. Prisoners, most of them poor, cater for the children until relations take them, or they are put up for adoption. What is their future?
With the generally unacceptable conditions in which Nigerians live, it is easier to ignore prisoners and their plight. They are part of society. If the laws were a little more stringent, more Nigerians, the mighty moreso, could be in jail.
The point is validly made that prisoners – some of who are awaiting trial for years, and who may eventually be released for lack of evidence to prosecute them – have rights. The fact that nobody cares about their rights do not mean they do not exist.
The USA for years lived in denial of the abuses in its prisons. Women were shackled while giving birth, more than 1.5 million children were born in jail over 25 years, sexual abuses were nobody’s concern until some years back when the reforms began. Prison officers are being jailed for abuses; some prisons are building nurseries for the children.
We cannot address abuses in prisons without admitting them. There would be no seriousness without punishing offending officials and setting new standards for conduct. Fears of the truth would delay the reforms that fate of pregnant prisoners deserves.  We have a major prison challenge in our hands, we cannot pretend otherwise

Aides of billionaire bizwoman, Folorunsho Alakija, arrested for fraud

An aide of billionaire business woman, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, and six others have been arrested by EFCC for forgery, impersonation and stealing N3 million from Mrs Alakija's foundation, Rose of Sharon.

Vincent Ayewah (pictured above centre) conspired with six others to allegedly steal cheques and withdraw money meant for the beneficiaries of the Rose of Sharon Foundation. Mrs Alakija, who petitioned the EFCC, alleged that Vincent forged cheques of the foundation’s Stanbic IBTC Bank Account and got his sister Miss Florence Ayewah  (pictured above, right) and their friends to cash the forged cheques by presenting them with fake identity cards.

In the course of investigation,  it was discovered that Vincent used his position to enlist his family members as beneficiaries of the scheme. Florence was arrested at a Stanbic IBTC bank in Lagos while trying to cash a forged Cheque in the sum of N97, 000 in favour of one Ms Olubunmi Juliana Ishola. Besides Vincent and Florence, six other members of the syndicate involved in the scam and who have also been arrested are: George Ehizibolo, Onwuwa David, Okonkwo Chikadibia, Emmanuel Ayewah, Florence Ayewah and Chinyere Awanah.

The suspects will be arraigned in court soon.

cop24n-1-webA Crofton man was arrested for impersonating a police officer after he pulled over an actual off-duty Capitol Heights police officer Wednesday afternoon in Upper Marlboro.
Prince George’s County Police say 29-year-old Anthony Kenneth Mastrogiovanni, of the 900 block of Eastham Court, was driving a white pickup truck on southbound Route 301 when he attempted to stop the Capitol Height Police Officer in his personal vehicle around 4:09 p.m.

The officer then told the suspect that he had no jurisdiction. He also informed him that having blue and red emergency equipment installed on his truck was illegal in the state.
Mastrogiovanni reportedly then fled the scene at Route 301 and Trade Zone Avenue.
The Capitol Heights officer followed him and contacted Prince George’s County police. PGPD was successfully able to stop the suspect.
Mastrogiovanni was arrested and charged with impersonating a police officer and released on his own personal recognizance.

50 Killed in Ogun Pipeline Fire

Over 50 suspected vandals were, yesterday, feared dead in an explosion that rocked the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation,NNPC, pipeline at Arepo village, Owode, Ogun State. Sunday Vanguard gathered that the explosion came following a fire which was sparked off by some vandals who stormed the creeks by boat to siphon fuel from the NNPC pipeline. Arepo was the scene of the killing of three NNPC officials by vandals last year. One of the survivors of yesterday's incident was said to have participated in the officials murder. He was arrested by the police alongside a doctor who, according to a reports, was taking him to hospital for treatment. The doctor claimed he had only responded to distress calls. There were fears, last night, that damage to the pipeline could worsen petrol scarcity as it supplies the product from Atlas Cove Jetty in Lagos to other South-West states. An eyewitness account stated that the explosion came after an argument erupted between two of the vandals who were struggling to siphon fuel from the pipeline and it resulted into a heated argument that made one of them who was armed with a rifle to shoot indiscriminately into the air.
The pipeline fire at Arepo yesterday.
Sunday Vanguard learnt that bullets from the rifle hit the ruptured pipeline and led to an explosion. Meanwhile, operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit, who have been on patrol of the area, responded to the explosion. It was in the course of the response that they made the arrests. Those arrested included the survivor identified as Sunday Reuben and the doctor. The source alleged that the doctor was trying to smuggle the survivor to his private clinic for treatment. The survivor, with severe burns, told Sunday Vanguard that there were more than 50 of them stealing petrol from the ruptured pipeline when the explosion took place, pleading for the rescue of his colleagues "blown away by the force of the blast and dying in the creeks." His claim could not be confirmed as the fire was still burning at press time thus hindering access to the place.
My story - survivor He narrated the story of how he came to be involved in yesterday's incident: "I was in my house when Suleiman my friend called me that there was a job at Arepo creeks. He asked me to look for a canoe and come with as many gallons as I could carry. Shortly after I arrived I saw people fighting before I heard a gunshot. The next thing was an explosion, I was lucky that I wasn't close to the pipeline. It was the heat of the fire that affected me. I managed to run to my boat where my mother was waiting. There were so many of us both men and women. We are more than 50 persons over there and most of us are still inside that fire. Most of them are still in the creeks dying, please help them. Iya Olabode called a doctor who was about taking me to the hospital when we were arrested by the police." The doctor said he acted on his oath to protect life. He explained that Iya Olabode, his customer called him to attend to a patient in her house at Abule Oba, Ikorodu area of Lagos. "I am a family doctor to Iya Olabode for the past three years. So when she called me that there is an emergency, I quickly rushed to her house where I saw Reuben badly burnt. I advised her that we should take the man to my clinic for better treatment. We were on our way when the police accosted us." He further claimed that he never remembered to ask the patient how he sustained the burns. "I forgot to ask him because I was in a hurry to save his life. I never knew that he could be a vandal because Iya Olabode is a good and respectable business woman. I am terribly sorry; I was only trying to save life." Confirming the arrests, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, who is in charge of the Task Force, said that the explosion started at about 2am yesterday. "Shortly after the explosion, policemen led by Sector Commander, Lagos, DSP Onaghise Osayande, cordoned off the area to reduce casualties while they awaited the arrival of fire fighters to quench the fire. It was in the process that they stumbled into a jeep carrying one of the survivors and a medical doctor who was on his way to hospital. In the course of interrogation, we discovered that the survivor was one of those who participated in the killing of the NNPC officials last year.
One of the surviving vandals
"The taskforce arrested six suspected vandals who were alleged to have participated in the incident that led to the killing of three Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) staff at Arepo Village, Owode in Ogun State". Looming petrol scarcity Meanwhile, a source close to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun State, which deployed its men to the scene of pipeline explosion, hinted that the NNPC had been asked to stop further supply of petrol to the pipeline to reduce the inferno. Experts said the interruption of supply was bound to worsen fuel scarcity of petrol in the south west states. Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in the state, Olanrewaju Kareem, in a press statement, in Abeokuta, said there was an explosion at "the NNPC pipeline on waterways at journalists Estate, Arepo in the state". He said, "the fire was noted yesterday by our surveillance team posted to monitor the situation around the place. "The fire might have been caused by vandals activities as we received an earlier call by the same surveillance team of suspicious movement around the waterways. "Our combat team were on their way at about 8:15 am when the out-break occurred, the team was instructed to move in by commandant Aboluwoye Akinwande for possible arrests. "However, no arrest was made as the vandals made their escape through Majidun side of the water ways. The Corps Commandant, Aboluwoye Akinwande, was there early this morning to have on the spot assessment of the situation. "He immediately called on NNPC to stop supply through the route. In due course, NNPC has made us to know that the fire will come down gradually".

13-year-old Runaway Boy Drives Father’s Mercedes Across Europe

mercedes
A 13-year-old boy ran away from his adoptive parents in Italy, taking his father’s Mercedes and driving 1,000 kilometres towards his native Poland before being stopped in Germany.
The boy, a go-kart enthusiast, managed to pass motorway toll booths and cross two international borders in his two-day drive across northern Italy, Austria and half of Germany.
“He looks like a 16-year-old, but still! He managed to fuel up and pass two borders. It’s just incredible,” Eleonora Spadati, head of local Carabinieri police in Montebelluna in northeast Italy where the boy ran from, said on Saturday.
Spadati said the boy missed Poland and wanted to see his biological sister.
Just before leaving on Thursday with just ₤200 (Dh1,184) in his pocket and a passport, he had also argued with his parents after they confiscated his mobile phone as a punishment for topping up its credit without their consent.
The boy’s parents quickly realised their son might have tried to go to Poland and contacted local Italian police, asking for an alert along his possible route.
German traffic police picked him up just 200 kilometres from the Polish border on Friday.
Spadati said she had been contacted by the Polish consulate asking after the boy, and social workers will increase checks on the family once they return to Italy on Sunday. [AFP]

Man Utd Go 10-Points Clear As Liverpool Falls 2-1 At Old Trafford

Manchester United, some few minutes ago, cemented their place at the top of the EPL with a 2-1 win over Liverpool and by so doing, extended their lead above rivals, Manchester City, to 10 points.
This is the second time this season that United will beat Brendan Rodgers’ boys by the same margin. Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini’s side play Arsenal later on in what could go on to be the decisive match in the race to the EPL title .
Manchester United were a goal up via the boots of Robin v.Persie in the 19th minute but it took the Red Devils the second half of the encounter to double that lead when Evra met a Robin v.Persie free-kick in the 54th minute and his low header deflected off Vidic and past Reina. Liverpool fought back and were rewarded 3 minutes later with a Daniel Sturridge rebound.
Final score, 2-1.

Man Arrested With $767k At Lagos Airport

CUSTOM-PERSONNEL
The Nigeria Customs Service on Friday arrested a Hong Kong-bound passenger at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, with $767,500.
The Customs Command at the airport said the passenger was arrested while boarding Emirates flight number EK782 to Hong Kong, via Dubai.
The Public Relations Officer of the Customs Service at the airport, Mrs Thelma Williams, said although the passenger declared the amount on the prescribed forms CDF1A and CDF1B, he could not explain satisfactorily the source of the money.
Williams said upon investigation, the suspect was observed to be a frequent traveller.
“He travelled between April 27 and Sept. 15, 2012 with $1.3m, which he took to Hong Kong.
“Also in Nov. 3, 2012, the suspect travelled with 10,000 dollars to China and the present case of Jan. 10 when he was caught trying to smuggle out 767,500 dollars to Hong Kong,” Williams said.
She said the passenger and the amount had been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation.
Last year, the EFCC said close to $100million was seized from travellers at the airports, trying to smuggle the money abroad.

Secondary School Girl Commits Suicide After Being Caught In Boy’s House In Kaduna

For fear of facing the shame of being caught in a boy’s house, a 17-year-old SS2 student, Christiana Silas, decided to commit suicide by taking a dose of insecticide in Karatudu area, Gonin Gora, Kaduna state, last christmas.
Prior to the suicidal action, we gathered that the teenager was caught in a boy’s room in the neighourhood after being declared missing for hours.
The late girl allegedly disappeared from the house at about 9pm on Christmas day without disclosing her whereabouts to anyone.
Eyewitnesses claimed that family members and residents searched round Karatudu and Romi area for hours but all efforts proved futile.
On giving his account of the tragic incident, Christiana’s father, Mr. Silas Wuyah, said “when we asked one of the boys living in the compound opposite the house, he said she was not there, but my brother’s wife said she didn’t trust the boy because she wondered why he was staying outside up till about 11pm.”
Adhering to her instincts, his brother’s wife ignored the boy, went into his room and found the girl lying on his bed and covered with blanket.
“So my family members who were already confused and bitter over what happened rushed at the boy and started beating him. In the process of beating him, my daughter went inside the house and drank chemical used for killing termites.
She was found foaming and rolling on the floor inside the parlour,” the bereaved father confirmed.
She was immediately rushed to a hospital in Gonin Gora, but she did not make it.
“I rushed back from Zaria to the hospital in Gonin Gora and it was confirmed to me that she was dead. I am still imagining what her problem could be that she has to kill herself. Maybe she was afraid of shame that she was caught in a boy’s room,” he added.
When asked if action would be taken against the boy in question, he said: “If I am to drag any case with the boy, I will just be wasting my time, because my daughter would not come back. The boy is part of the family, because he always comes to my house and I do send him on errands.
Though I know that my daughter killed herself after she left his room, I have forgiven him. I know it is evil spirit that entered and asked her to take the chemical and die so that she will not listen to what anybody will say.”
Mr Silas claimed that the boy in question was not her boyfriend, but neighbours insisted that the boy was Christiana’s boy friend.
They also speculated that she probably killed herself to cover up for the shame of being in a boy’s room at that hour, or that perhaps she was pregnant and did not want to face the shame that might come later.
Sympathizers have continued to throng the house of Mr. Silas to console him over the death of his daughter who has since been buried.
Until her death, the late Christana Silas was an SSS2 student of Government Day Secondary School, Romi
