Auditions Over: Nigerian Idol Top 90 Selected!

After months of intense searching, the curtains have drawn on the first phase of Nigeria's biggest music reality show, Nigerian Idol. The last two days of auditions saw the show hit the bottomless talent pools of Benin city and Lagos giving fans some of the most exciting auditions of the show yet. And now auditions are over, the tension is building as Idol moves to the next stage of the competition that is always make or break for many hopefuls-the elimination rounds. "The competition is beginning to unfold as the best of the lot go head to head. The grit and tenacity that the contestants show is unbelievable and you cannot help but watch to see what happens next. These contestants leave absolutely nothing to chance, they believe that they are the next Nigerian Idol and it is just spectacular to watch and listen to them all give it their best shot," said Tiwa Medubi, the Nigerian Idol project manager. With penultimate stop at Benin, the Nigerian Idol judges were more than pleasantly surprised with the first contestant of the day, 26-year-old student Emmanuel Egbo with his rendition of R. Kelly's "When a Woman Loves", and it earned him a golden ticket straight to Lagos. The judges were even more surprised at twins Peter and Paul Samari, and Peter made it to the next round. And though there were rough moments, overall the judges were impressed by their first time city to the "Heart Beat of Nigeria", Edo State. The search closed on a high with a return to Lagos for the final round of the audition, and it was a day of guys with guitars, epic vocal dexterity and even more epic disappointment. People from all over Nigeria gave one last push to get a coveted place in the top 90 and a chance to be the next Idol. Lagos was the place to be for last round of selections, and the show drew to a close on a high note, as singers belting out Whitney, Stevie Wonder and Adele showed the judges just what they were about. There were a few surprises in store as contestants from previous seasons such as Henry McJohn and Obinna Michael tried their luck again-and both got golden tickets. And there were no lengths that competitors would not go to for their chance to win. Liyele Oreoluwa and Owen Ehodize, literally crossed oceans, flying in from the United States of America for their shot at the prize. Now, the auditions are over and the true battle begins: who will make it through the elimination rounds? Nigerian Idol airs every weekend on: NTA Network at 4.00pm on Sundays and 3.00pm on Saturdays; Sound City and ONTV at 7.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays; STV at 8.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays; and on TVC at 9.00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Shameful : Pastor accused of raping 12-year-old girl

A pastor, Alasco Sobowale, has been accused of raping a 12-year-old girl (name withheld) in Epe, Lagos State. The pastor was said to have allegedly had carnal knowledge of the girl at their home located at 10, Togodo Street, Temu Town.
The victim’s aunt, Mrs. Ngozi Anjorin, said the incident occurred on December 15, 2012
Anjorin said the victim only spoke Igbo Language and had recently arrived Lagos from Imo State. She said Sobowale, who also speaks Igbo, allegedly lured her niece to the toilet around 9pm and had sex with her.

She said, “My niece was sent to Lagos about two weeks before the incident so I could send her to school because she doesn’t speak English Language. She only speaks Igbo and only I and the pastor, who is our neighbour, speak Igbo.

“On that particular night, my children were in the room watching television but I couldn’t find my niece. I kept on shouting her name but I got no answer. I then proceeded to the toilet which is detached from the building. I knocked on the door of the toilet and the pastor immediately ran out and I saw her inside the toilet.

“When I inquired of her what she was doing inside the toilet with the pastor, she said he lured her into the toilet and covered her mouth with his palm so she wouldn’t scream. She said the pastor brought out his penis and forced it into her anus. She said he also put his penis in her vagina and when she discharged a particular fluid, he used a handkerchief to scoop it.”

Anjorin said Sobowale, who lives with his wife and children in the same compound, fled after the incident.

Anjorin said two days later, she reported the matter to the Epe Police Division and the policemen began to look for him.

It was learnt that two days later, the police were able to arrest him.
Residents told our correspondent that after Sobowale’s arrest, some of his church members accused a six-year-old girl of bewitching the pastor and had her flogged and paraded.

A source, who craved anonymity, said, “Sobowale is not actually the head pastor. His wife is the senior pastor of the church known as Okiki Imole. A few days after the incident, a six-year-old girl was branded a witch and accused of manipulating the pastor to commit the dastardly act.

“The poor girl was beaten up and paraded round the town. They said when the pastor was conducting deliverance for her; her spirit took over his body.”
Anjorin said the alleged rape victim was rushed down to Epe General Hospital where tests were conducted on her.
A copy of the doctor’s report made available to PUNCH Metro, stated that the victim’s “vaginal hymen is no longer intact and bruises were observed in the anal region.”

The report further stated that there was sperm residue in the victim’s private part and it was concluded that she had been sexually assaulted.

A doctor, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said because Sobowale had not provided his sperm sample, it was impossible to ascertain if it was his own sperm that was found in the victim’s private part.

PUNCH metro learnt that Sobowale was released a few days later and charges against him dropped.
Anjorin however protested the development, adding it was not safe for her niece to live in the same compound with Sobowale.

A neighbour, who craved anonymity, said it was the habit of policemen in the area to cover up such crimes.

“Whenever a crime of this nature occurs, the police would ask the suspect to offset the victim’s hospital bill and then grant the suspect bail. It is very common in areas like Epe because it is not situated in the metropolis,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed that the girl was raped.

Braide said the police had not taken sides, adding that the pastor was released on bail because courts were not in session.
“The pastor is in charge of a white garment church in the area. He will be charged with sodomy. He was released on bail because courts are not sitting but once courts resume, he will be charged,” she said.

Dana Air to Resume Flight Operations on Friday, January 4, 2013

An official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr James Shallangwa, has revealed that Dana Air will resume flight operation on Jan. 4. Shallangwa, Head of Commercial at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Internatonal Airport, Abuja, made this known in an interview with reporters in Abuja.
According to him, the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, had issued a resumption letter to the airline to recommence operation after its plane crashed in Lagos on June 3, 2012. The first flight would take off from Abuja, adding that there was nothing wrong in the airline re-emerging after an accident that claimed lives and property.
One Mr Tony Usidamen, the Head, Corporate Communications, Dana, who confirmed the development, said the resumption came after necessary approval was received from the Federal Government. Mr Kayode Adeniran, the Dana Station Manager at the NAIA, also confirmed the development. He said that the airline would resume its inaugural flight at 9:45a.m. on Jan. 4.
It will be recalled that the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), had revoked the company’s operation license pending proper investigations into a crash in Lagos on June 3, 2012, which killed all 153 passengers and crew. However, in September 2012, the Federal Government reinstated the Airline’s license and allowed it to resume without any flight operations. In December 2012, NCAA issued a new Air Operators Certificate to Dana Air after it completed the necessary recertification processes.

Damn Crazy; My Dad Impregnated Me, Aborted It Twice – Teenager

The Human Right department of Ilemba Hausa Police Division, in Ojo area of Lagos has arrested a 49- year-old man who allegedly had been having carnal knowledge of his teenaged daughter for five years.
father-crime[1]
It was discovered during investigation that his daughter Janet(not real name)got pregnant in the process twice, only for her father to allegedly abort the pregnancy with the aid of a herbalist.
Sitting at a corner in the Human Rights Office, 17-year-old Janet could not raise her head to face her father, Wale Akinusi, who was also there. When approached, she simply stated that at last, she had been freed from the psychological trauma associated with her father’s sacrilegious act.
Crime Alert gathered that Janet’s tale of woe started after her mother abandoned her barely when she was two-year-old for her paternal grandmother.
It was gathered that her mother who was then a Junior Secondary 3 student, was impregnated by Wale who was 32 years old. Initially, he reportedly denied paternity of the pregnancy but later opted for an abortion on the ground that he could not afford to father a child then because he was only an apprentice.
But his mother came to the rescue as she offered to take care of the baby who turned out to be Janet.
But when she was 12, her father, reportedly took her from her grandmother, with a promise to give her a better education.
Rather than live up to his promise, her father, allegedly use her to satisfy his s*xual urge, a practice that went on until he was arrested.
Narrating how it all started, Janet in her sitting position with her head bowed all through, said: “When I was leaving my grandmother’s house, I was happy because my father said I would be attending a better school. But I waited for months without being enrolled in any school.
“One night, then, I was 12,my dad called me into his room and told me he took an oat with my mother to be the first man to have s*x with me. He said it had a spiritual connotation and that it was to enable him assume his proper financial state.
“Then, I was too young to understand what he meant. He had carnal knowledge of me that night. At a point, he asked if it was painful. All I did was to watch him have his way, still unable to understand what he was doing.”
First pregnancy aborted by a herbalist
“It continued until I was 14 years. Then, I started having a funny feeling. I told him I was sick and when we conducted a pregnancy test, it was positive. Next day, he told me we were going somewhere and we ended up in the home of a herbalist in Ikorodu, who gave me some concoction. I drank some in his apartment and took the rest home. After two days, my menstruation started and my father assured me all was well.
He only gave me a week’s break before he continued all over again. Two years later, when I was 16 years, I got sick again. When I informed daddy, we went for another pregnancy test which confirmed my fear; I was pregnant again!
When he returned next day from his shop, he told me there was no need to go to the herbalist. Rather he gave me two sachets of Alabukun and squeezed some lime juice into a cup, asking me to take it in a gulp. It did the magic and the menstrual flow started few days later.”
“After the second abortion, I became tired of the whole thing. I started being afraid every night. At times, I would put tissue paper under my panties , pretending I was witnessing my monthly flow. After a while, he got the trick, for he started taking note of the date.
Challenges father
“I summoned courage and reported the sacrilegious act to our neighbors. But none of them could confront him. Rather they told me they could not interfere into our family affair” , she stated, with her head still bent.
Apparently discouraged by the cold reaction from the neighbors, Janet decided to take the bull by the horn. Looking straight into his father’s eyes for the very first time since the sacrilegious act started, she told her father she was tired of the whole thing. To make do her threat, she reportedly rushed to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and threatened to stab him if he attempted to force her.
“This happened on November 28, 2012. My father had come home from his shop . And at about 6pm, he called me inside to warm his bed. But when he saw the knife, he retraced his steps. I quickly ran inside my room , with the knife in my hand and packed my things out of the house, to stay with a friend whose family welcomed me after I narrated all that has been going on in the past five years.”
“After spending three weeks with them, I received a text message from my father, asking me to come home, or I would die. When I showed the text message to the family I was putting up with, they suggested I reported the case to the police. I hesitated at first because I was scared he would be jailed.
“But I changed my mind when the text message threat continued”, she said.
I did that to appease the gods – father
When approached, it was obvious that 49-year-old Wale Akinusi, a fashion designer who hails from Ondo central in Ondo state was oblivious of the legal implication of the offense, as he showed no sign of remorse.
He bluntly told this reporter that what he did was not new under the sun, adding that this would not be the first time such story would be published on the pages of newspapers.
“It is not a new thing that a man has s*x with his daughter and even if I am jailed at the end, I will surely come out after serving my jail term. But I promise that my daughter will join me” he threatened, dismissing the issue with a wave of the hand.
Continuing, he said: “I went back to claim my child so as to fulfill the oat made between her mother and I. That was why I took her to the herbalist when she was pregnant, so as to appease the gods of her mother’s land. You will not understand.
“You see, when her mother was six months pregnant, we made love. She later told me that it was a taboo for a man to sleep with a pregnant woman in her place. She said the only remedy was for the man to be the first person to sleep with the child.
“I initially did not want to do it. But along the line, I discovered that things were not going on well with me financially. And when I made inquiry, I was made to understand that I had to appease the god’s of her mother’s land, so as to attain my rightful place in destiny.”
Asked why he continued after the first time, he kept mute. Also asked why he did not satisfy his s*xual urge on his wife who has had four children for him, he explained that they were leaving apart.
“My wife lives in Ketu with the children while I live in Ojo. I had to live apart because I do not want my wife and children to suffer the consequences of my sin. Also I did not want my wife to know I was sleeping with my own daughter”, he said.
Meanwhile, effort according to sources at the Human Rights department, was on to arrest the herbalist who allegedly gave Janet the concoction that aborted her first pregnancy, while her father would be charged to court.

Why D’banj and Genevieve Nnaji Broke Up

dg
Some of you think the relationship between D’banj and Genevieve Nnaji was a publicity stunt…it wasn’t! The sexy stars dated off and on between 2009 and early 2012. D’banj recently opened up to Toolz on the Juice about his relationship with Ms Nnaji and said he doesn’t know who dumped who.
Genevieve was a friend…(but now) I haven’t seen her…I don’t know who dumped who.
One could tell for certain that Genevieve did the dumping. Not necessarily because she wanted to, but because she had no choice. There were just too many women around D’banj. It seemed at a point, a lot of women wanted a piece of the Kokomaster, including a close friend of the actress who allegedly began an affair with D’banj behind her back. Genny decided she’d had enough and ended things in late 2011.
Genevieve and D’banj briefly reconciled in early 2012, but ended things for good after D’banj started flaunting his relationship with Ghanian actress, Nadia Buari.

The relationship which began in late 2009 after the two met at the airport, became public after D’banj granted an exclusive INTERVIEW to Stella Dimoko Korkus in March 2010, expressing his feelings for Miss Nnaji.
D’banj said:
“We have been trying to keep this quiet but yes, I am dating Genevieve Nnaji. I am in love with her. It’s been long I felt this way about anyone. I don’t know what other words to use to qualify my feelings. She’s my baby, she’s my every thing and I love her.”
People in the know claim that it wasn’t only the other women in D’banj’s life that ended their relationship but also because Genny herself was not committed to the relationship. D’banj was said to have been hurt after he heard that Genny had also allegedly dated another popular Nigerian singer.

JTF In Borno Decries Residents’ Attitude To Boko Haram’s Insurgency

The continued threat posed by radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram, in Borno state has been attributed to the lack of resistance of the people of Maiduguri and its environs to the activities of the sect.
This was disclosed by the military on Tuesday while decrying the attitude of the people of the area.
The military in a statement signed by the spokesman of the Joint Task Force Operation Restore Order in the state, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, lamented that “unlike in Kano, Birnin Gwari and Rigasa areas of Kaduna State, all these obnoxious and sacrilegious acts elicited not a single passive or active resistance from the locals who in the absence of security agencies were there when the inhuman acts were committed.”
He claimed that: “In an effort to contain crime and criminality, some communities in Nigeria have since devised neighbourhood surveillance and alarm system and other resistance measures to assist themselves and security agencies in combating insecurity in their respective areas.”
Continuing, Musa lamented that “This aspect is totally lacking in Borno State particularly in Maiduguri metropolis and its immediate environs.”
He said: “In view of the above, the JTF wishes to use this opportunity to reiterate the need for local communities to rise to the challenge by pre-empting terrorists act of this nature by way of giving timely and accurate information to security agencies and where possible to actively react to this madness since the Task Force cannot be everywhere at the same time.”
While urging members of the public to pass credible information to the JTF through its frequently advertised lines that are operational at all times, Musa said the task force “is strongly concerned with incessant callous, brutal, barbaric and impious killings of people in some states of the North-eastern part of Nigeria particularly in Borno State. More worrisome is the inhuman way the terrorists perpetrate their dastardly acts ranging from outright shootings, machetting and slaughtering of their victims.”

17 Year-Old Boy Drowns at Lekki Beach, Lagos

Picture: Samuel (left) & others shortly before the tragedy

The festive period is a time when people love to hang out with friends and family at various relaxation centers. In Lagos, a city which borders the Atlantic ocean, the beaches are a favourite relaxation spot for many and they usually have a throng of visitors during the Chrismas and New Year period.

Sadly, for Samuel Obu, the teenage son of Pastor Owulo Obu, his life was cut short at the Lekki Beach, Lagos Nigeria, where he and some friends went to hang out just before the new year. Pastor Obu is the head of Latter House of God Church located at 26/27 Guinness Street, Pero bus stop, Agege, Lagos.

According to PM News, 17 year-old Samuel went to the beach in company of a female member of his father's church, Comfort Adikpe, 30; her boyfriend, Busayo and her younger brother, Godwin to enjoy themselves. The report stated that before Samuel went to the beach on Sunday, he approached his mother to give him transport money. But when she delayed, he went into his mother's bedroom and picked a N1,000 note for his journey.

Comfort told PM News that Samuel drowned at the beach when he and her brother, Godwin, went to play in the Atlantic sea  waves. "When the wave swept him away, we begged the divers to rescue Samuel and after some efforts they retreated when the wave was about sweeping them away also," she said.

She added that when the matter was later reported at the police station at about 7.35 p.m on that fateful day, she was detained till the following morning when she was released.

Comfort, a recharge card seller who hails from Benue State, north-central Nigeria, added that Samuel and Godwin were drummers at Latter House of God founded by Samuel's father.

When PM News visited the Pastor's residence yesterday, the mother of the late Samuel was still in shock. All she could manage to say was, "we are still confused about what happened to my first child."

This is really sad. May his soul rest in peace.

Nigeria May Become Global Economic Power By 2030 – US

AMBASSADOR TERENCE P. McCULLEY, THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO NIGERIA
In a contrary opinion to what the United States army predicted that Nigeria as it is known may cease to exist by the year 2015, the ultra secretive United States National Intelligence Council, NIC, has projected that Nigeria could join a handful of countries including China, that would be the driving force behind shaping the world’s economy by the year 2030.
The NIC report, which is an articulation of expertise opinion from the US intelligence community, released last December, projects a glimpse of what the world may look like in the future.
The report would be highly welcome back home among Nigerian government officials who are still working towards actualizing Vision 20:2020.
In the report on Global Trends 2030, the report notes that the United States and Europe would be overwhelmed by the economic powers of Asian countries as China and other Asian countries and Brazil take a leading role in dictating the pace of the world economy.
China according to the report, would just leap above the US before 2030 as the world’s biggest economy.
Other powers including Nigeria according to the report, would also jump to the top in global economic ranking.
“In addition to China, India, and Brazil, regional players such as Colombia , Indonesia , Nigeria , South Africa and Turkey will become especially important to the global economy,” the report says.
“The diffusion of power among countries will have a dramatic impact by 2030. Asia will have surpassed North America and Europe combined in terms of global power, based upon GDP, population size, military spending, and technological investment.
“China alone will probably have the largest economy, surpassing that of the United States a few years before 2030.
“Meanwhile, the economies of Europe, Japan, and Russia are likely to continue their slow relative declines.”
Since its establishment in 1979, the NIC has served as a bridge between the intelligence and policy communities, a source of deep substantive expertise on intelligence issues even though the projections may not be exact

In what friends have called a terrible accident, 19-year old Savannah Ramirez, has shot and killed her brother, Manuel Ortiz while posing with a handgun for Facebook photos on New Year’s eve.
Police said 22-year-old Ortiz and his sister Savannah came back to the home they shared on New Year’s Eve after spending the night drinking. Reports say she was posing and playing around with the weapon when it went off striking Ortiz in the head.
While it remains unclear who owns the gun, it is also not known if the duo knew it was loaded but Savannah has been questioned and released pending further investigation in the case.
However, the victim’s sister would likely be charged with manslaughter if tests conclude she had alcohol in her system at the time of the shooting.
On both Manuel and his sister’s Facebook pages there are numerous shots of them posing with guns and making gang symbols.
