Pipeline Explosion Rocks Lagos State

RESIDENTS of Ijeododo in Ijegun, Lagos have fled the community following a pipeline explosion and the inferno in the village, located in Ojo Local Government of the state.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline exploded on Monday night  in the community.
As at 9.15pm on Tuesday, no casualty had been reported in the explosion said to have been caused by suspected pipeline vandals.
Our correspondent gathered the incident might worsen the fuel scarcity in the South-West as the pipeline transports petrol pumped from Atlas Cove.
The NNPC, it was learnt, had discontinued supply of petrol through the line following the explosion. The corporation pumps about 11 million litres of petrol per day through the pipeline.
News Agency of Nigeria reported that fire fighters arrived the scene four hours after the fire started but could not immediately access the area.
The spokesman of National Emergency Management Agency  Mr.  Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “We contacted the fire fighters though they could not get to the scene because of the nature of the area.
“We also contacted officials of the NNPC who have blocked all the outlets, which is why the fire is subsiding.”
Farinloye spoke as residents of  Ijeododo recounted their experiences of the explosion.
Mr. Sunday Obiase, a dispatch rider, told NAN that he was in his wife’s shop when they noticed the fire.
Obiase said when the fire was noticed, people began to flee their homes as its intensity grew.
A landlord, Mr Sabinus Igbozuluke, said, “I gathered my certificates and other important belongings because the fire could get beyond control.”
According to a man, who identified himself as Baba Tunde, the vandals came through FESTAC.
“There is no road from Ijeododo to the site, everywhere is swampy, you can only pass through FESTAC which is closer,” he said.
Another landlord, Mr. Vitalis Ukewui, said such incident occurred in 2011  and left the area in darkness for over seven months.
“Last year, this same thing happened and we were left in darkness for over seven months until we paid some levy,” he said.
He expressed the fear that since the outbreak was more severe than the previous one, it could leave the whole area in darkness.
A spokesperson for the NNPC, Ms. Tumini Green, said there was still fire at the scene of the explosion. But she added that officials of the Pipelines And Products Marketing Company Limited, a subsidiary of the NNPC, were still trying to put out the fire.
She said the activities of vandals, caused the inferno.
“This had always happened, and we have PMS on the line,” she said.
The Chairman, Independent petroleum marketers Association of Nigeria, Western Zone, Mr. Olumide Ogunmade, described the incident as “a bad thing,” that would have an effect on product supply.
According to him, the Ije-Ododo axis is a route to all depots, and the explosion at the line was like cutting off the supply route from Atlas Cove.
He said, “It is serious. It is like going back to square one.
“Government needs to tackle pipeline vandalism holistically. We must not surrender to vandals.
“Government has the resources to fight this. It should set up the machinery needed.”

Air mishap averted on Ilorin-Lagos route

From Vanguard
Smarting from the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of former Governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa, former National Security Adviser, General Andrew Azazi, and four others last Saturday in Bayelsa State, the nation would have witnessed yet another disaster but for providence, as an Overland Airways flight from Ilorin to Lagos suffered technical problems on take-off.
A source told Vanguard that the flight, OJ 1188, had difficulties stabilising in the air as the landing gear failed to retract after take-off from Ilorin Airport, Sunday.

The pilot was said to have continued the journey to Lagos, with the flight witnessing turbulence as the landing gear failed to retract.

A passenger on the flight said the aircraft wobbled its way into Murtala Muhammad Airport with its landing gear hanging dangerously throughout the flight.

Vanguard could not confirm the incident from the operator of the airline, Capt. Edward Boyo, last night as calls put through his mobile number remained unanswered.

However, Director-General of Nigerian Civil Authority, NCAA, Dr. Harold Demuren, who confirmed the development, said the aircraft on take-off at Ilorin Airport, hit an object which made it impossible for the landing gear to retract after take-off.

He said the pilot was, however, able to manipulate the aircraft to land safely in Lagos, without injuries to the passengers.

11-year-old Boy Caught with a Gun in School, Says it is for the Protection of Himself and His Friends

With the Newtown massacre still fresh in the memory of most Americans, and while President Obama is trying to figure out how to review the gun laws of the country, an 11-year-old boy has been caught with an ammunition in school, south of Salt Lake City.
The boy, who said he brought the gun to school to protect himself from a Newtown-style attack, then brandished the pistol at three classmates during recess. He has been detained on assault and weapons charges, a school spokesman said. A sixth-grader, the boy took the unloaded .22-caliber handgun to his school south of Salt Lake City in his backpack on Monday, a spokesman for the Granite School District said.
Also, some ammunition was found in the backpack, but it did not appear to go with the gun, the spokesman, Ben Horsley said. No one was injured in the incident, which occurred as jittery parents, teachers and students around the country faced their first day back at school since 20 children and six adult staffers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, were shot to death by a lone gunman last Friday.
The 11-year-old student at Utah’s West Kearns Elementary, who was not publicly identified, has insisted he brought the gun to school to “protect himself and his friends from a Connecticut-style incident,” Horsley said. However, the boy is accused of waving the gun at three classmates on a soccer field during recess. Later on Monday, one of those students and a second classmate alerted their teacher, who “immediately took the student into custody and took him down to the principal’s office,” Horsley said.

Tunde Is Leaving, But We Are Not Breaking Up – Styl Plus

The speculation that Nigeria’s foremost R&B group, Style Plus have broken up came to the fore recently when Tunde Akinsanmi aka Tunde aka Native Boy was reported to have left the group following his rebranding and anticipated single release but the group has come out debunk such media reports.
In a statement, Styl Plus disclosed that Tunde, one of its founding members, is ‘indeed’ leaving, but the group is not ‘breaking up’.Styl-Plus
The group which came into national appeal in late 2003, further said “We owe it to our fans to clear the air on this matter. In the process of working towards a collective vision and in this vein, Tunde Akinsanmi has decided to pursue a solo career and delve into other ventures that are not Styl-Plus’s priority at the moment”.
The statement further added, “the group’s musical projects will go on as usual: Shifi and Zeal will be releasing a new single titled ‘Tonight (Ale-Oni)’ in the coming weeks.
“We thank all the fans and media whose unwavering support we have enjoyed so far and continue to enjoy,” the statement concludes.

Champions League Draws: Manchester United draw Real Madrid

Manchester United have been drawn against Spanish champions Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.
The match will see Cristiano Ronaldo return to Old Trafford for the first time since his £80m move from United to Real in June 2009. Celtic will play Italian side Juventus, while Arsenal take on last year's beaten finalists Bayern Munich. Four-times winners Barcelona take on seven-times champions AC Milan, while Valencia face Paris St Germain.
Borussia Dortmund have been drawn against Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto take on Malaga, while Galatasaray will play Schalke. But the undoubted tie of the round sees nine-times winners Real take on United for the first time in nine years.
The sides last met in the 2002-03 semi-final with the Spaniards triumphing 6-5 on aggregate. Real won the first leg of that tie 3-1 and went through after a virtuoso second-leg performance from the Brazilian Ronaldo, who scored a hat-trick and was applauded off the Old Trafford pitch, as United won 4-3. United club secretary John Alexander said: "Out of several stand-out ties, I think this is the one. If history has anything in our favour our one [aggregate] victory against Real Madrid in this competition was in the season when we won the final at Wembley [in 1968]." As group winners, United will again play the second leg of the tie at home.
Celtic and Arsenal, as group runners-up, will play their first legs at home.
Hoops manager Neil Lennon is looking forward to a "beauty" of a tie against Italian champions Juventus.
"In terms of glamour it's a beauty," he said. "Juventus are one of the great traditional European teams. So in terms of glamour it's great, in terms of qualification it is going to be very tough." Meanwhile, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is optimistic his side will see off Arsenal.
"We enter this match as the slight favourites but we can make the mistake of underestimating them," said the German.
"Arsenal have struggled at times in the league over the last few months, which a look upon the standings in the Premier League will tell you.
"We want to set the foundations with a good performance in London, that would make things easier for us in our home game." The first legs will be played on either February 12/13 or 19/20, with the return matches on March 5/6 or 12/13.
More to follow. Champions League round of 16 draw:
Galatasaray v FC Schalke
Celtic v Juventus
Arsenal v Bayern Munich
Shakhtar Donetsk v Borussia Dortmund
AC Milan v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Manchester United
Valencia v Paris St Germain
FC Porto v Malaga
