Delta State; Kidnappers kill soldier, driver, abduct Lebanese engineer

There was security scare in Delta State, Tuesday, as four dare-devil kidnappers, armed with AK 47 rifles, allegedly shot dead a soldier and abducted a Lebanese staff of Setraco Construction Company at Ughelli, Mr. Harry Fadi.
In addition, a judge of the Delta State High Court, Justice Marshal Umukoro, miraculously escaped death, along Warri-Ughelli Road at Okuokoko community, when another set of gunmen numbering four riddled his KIA SUV with bullets along Warri-Ughelli Road.
The daring broad daylight escapades of the kidnappers sent a disturbing signal to residents, as well as security agents, who were combing suspected hideouts in the state for the kidnappers of Professor Kamene Okonjo, mother of the Minister of Finance, Prof Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Police will get the kidnappers – Commissioner Aduba
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, who confirmed the foiled kidnap of the judge and abduction of the expatriate staff to Vanguard, said there was no cause for alarm, as the police would track down the kidnappers.
No information yet on Okonjo- Iweala’s mother
There was still no information yet on the whereabouts of Professor Kamene Okonjo, but a dependable source said workers in the palace were invited by the police to make statements on how the matriarch of the Okonjo family was abducted.
Sources suspect that there could be an inside collaboration and police were waiting for clues that would lead them to the kidnappers, but at the same time, “they would not want to do anything that will jeopardize the safety of the aged woman”.
Pandemonium in Ughelli
Vanguard gathered that the gunmen killed the soldier when he attempted to stop them from kidnapping the expatriate, who the deceased was escorting in a vehicle at Ekiugbo Junction, Ughelli. They drove away with the Setraco staff after killing the soldier.
Reports said that pandemonium broke out in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, following the killing the soldier attached to Setraco Nigeria Limited, the construction firm handling the dualization of the East/West Road by gunmen.
A Lebanese engineer working for the construction firm was abducted by the heavily- armed gunmen, who stormed the construction site of the company at Ekuigbo-Ughelli at about 8am.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity said the expatriate was whisked away by the kidnappers in a Mercedes Benz 190 car to an unknown destination.

State to focus on areas of HIV prevalence

THE government’s latest survey of HIV among pregnant women, released on Monday, has highlighted tremendous variation on how the epidemic has affected South Africa’s 52 health districts, with prevalence ranging from 5% in the Northern Cape’s Namakwa to 46% in Gert Sibande in Mpumalanga.
The Department of Health has conducted an HIV and syphilis prevalence survey among pregnant women every year since 1990, enabling it to track the progression of the HIV epidemic and gauge the effect of its response.
Its latest snapshot of the epidemic in the health districts points to regions that need more attention, the deputy director-general for HIV, tuberculosis and child and maternal health, Dr Yogan Pillay, said on Monday.
He said officials were very concerned about districts with an HIV prevalence of over 40% and were considering increasing condom distribution in these areas.
The male condom distribution rate in Gert Sibande was just 18 per male per year, compared with 40 in Eden, which had a prevalence of 16%, Dr Pillay said.
The sample sizes in each district are small, so there is often considerable year-on-year fluctuation, but the data collected provided a useful picture of patterns over time, said University of Cape Town demographer Rob Dorrington.
The 2011 antenatal clinic survey, released on Monday by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, found 29.5% of pregnant women attending government clinics were infected with HIV, a level that has remained constant for the past five years.
The survey contains good news on two fronts — the rate of new infections is declining and more women in their 30s are living longer as they get access to life-saving treatment, said Prof Dorrington.
The survey reported that about 5.6-million people living in SA last year were HIV-positive.
The HIV prevalence among young women aged between 15 and 19, which is used as a proxy for new infections because they are assumed to have been relatively recently infected, was 12.7%. In 2010, the prevalence was 14%.
In a separate development, activists from Médecins Sans Frontières and the Treatment Action Campaign on Monday raised the alarm over drugs shortages in the Eastern Cape, following a strike at the Mthatha medical depot.
"Serious antiretroviral drug supply shortages at the Mthatha medical depot threaten the health of more than 50,000 HIV patients in the Eastern Cape who are at risk of treatment interruption," they said.
Dr Pillay said the Department of Health had sent two teams to the Eastern Cape to help resolve the crisis, which affected all patients, not just those with HIV.
Vaccines and chronic medicine supplies had also been affected, he said.

Giggs:Man- City are new Arsenal

Ryan Giggs has compared United’s current rivalry with City to that formerly shared with Arsenal, citing the recently intensified Manchester derby as reason.

From 1997 to 2004, the Reds consistently battled the Gunners for the Premier League title and meetings between the pair were often highly-charged, competitive affairs that weren’t for the faint-hearted.
Just days after a similarly ferocious match at the Etihad Stadium, Giggs cannot help but compare clashes with the Blues to those of yesteryear against Arsene Wenger’s team.
“We had so many battles with Arsenal that were skilful games, but also physically tough, and I felt the game was like that on Sunday,” Ryan told Red Voices, ManUtd.com’s exclusive podcast.
“It is two very good teams with the added spice that it’s a local derby. Over the last three years, each Manchester derby has intensified. The build-up is longer, people start talking about it earlier and the feeling when you win is even better.
“It was two quality sides, both in good form and going head to head at the top of the league. We took the first half and then City came back into life like we expected, but I thought we still looked dangerous and had goals in us during the second half. At 2-2, with City coming back into it, most people would’ve settled for a draw, but we score late goals so often and there is no better feeling, especially in such a big game.”

31 Estates To Be Demolished In Abuja

Senator Bala Mohammed, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has insisted that 31 illegally built estates in Abuja would be demolished.

Speaking at his ministry’s 2013 budget defense before the Senate Committee on the FCT, Mohammed stated that the ministry had the backing of the nation’s laws to demolish illegal estates.
According to him, this was aimed at putting a stop to the impunity of developers in the capital territory. So far, the FCT authority had demolished over 500 housing units since September amidst loud protest by those affected.

“We cannot allow a situation or exercise of impunity or lawlessness; we are not going to condone this for any reason. You are putting a lot of sentiments as a politician, I am a civil servant; I am working according to the law. These people have been told not to do it. Nigerians are gullible.

“Coming back to the 31 estates unfortunately, when the FCT development programme was put in place, there was no guideline to have a timeline for delivery-for infrastructure and prototype ,for people to know that this is what we are going to get within certain period”.

He pointed out that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has a law and Abuja master plan is not to be compromised.

“I have a law on demolishing. The law I said I don’t have is the one the Chairman asked on the issue of parking. But for demolition I have a law and I don’t even have to interfere with development control law under the land use Act,” he said.

“We are coming with American investors as well as our own Abuja Property Development Company. We are going to build 1,000 hectares, so that we will bring housing for Nigerians who cannot afford them in highbrow area. We want to build structural and affordable houses. Those whose building will be demolished we will make sure that there are alternatives for them”.

Beyonce Becomes Face of Pepsi, Signs 30 million pounds Deal

She is already one of the most recognisable faces in show business with a fortune of £200m.
But fans of Beyonce are likely to see much more of her after she signed a £30m deal to become the face of Pepsi.
Not only will she appears in adverts for the soft drink, but in a first for the company, her face will be featured on cans and bottles of the drink.
While other well known figures, such as David Beckham and Jennifer Lopez, have been used in TV and magazine campaigns it is the first time that a celebrity’s face will adorn the drink.
The limited edition cans will be released in March and sold worldwide, including the UK.
The promotion will be kick started by Beyonce’s appearance in February during the half time show at the Super Bowl, the world’s most watched sports event with worldwide audience of over 500 million viewers.
Another part of the deal will see Pepsi investing millions in other projects favoured by the singer that have no connection to promoting the soft drink.
Announcing the deal, Beyonce said: ‘Pepsi embraces creativity and understands that artists evolve.
‘As a businesswoman, this allows me to work with a lifestyle brand with no compromise and without sacrificing my creativity.’
Pepsi will sponsor the singer’s concert next year and as a brand ambassador she will star in a TV advert to be release in early 2013.
A crucial part of the deal will see Pepsi investing millions in other projects that Beyonce wants to support.
Lee Anne Callahan-Longo, general manager of Beyonci’s Parkwood Entertainment, said those collaborative projects could include live events, videos or “a cool photo shoot,” but are still at the early stages of development.
Pepsi chiefs said they want to be seen as sponsors of artists rather than just paying a celebrity for their endorsement.
‘Consumers are seeking a much greater authenticity in marketing from brands they love,’ said Brad Jakeman, president of Pepsi’s global beverage group.
‘It’s caused a shift in the way we think about deals with artists, from a transactional deal to mutually beneficial collaboration.’
Beyonce,31, is recognised as a powerhouse across music, video and film.
She has won 16 Grammy awards and sold more than 100 million records to become one of the biggest stars in the world.
With her husband, music producer and rap star Jay-Z, they are the highest earning couple in show business with a joint annual income of over £50m.
The couple had their first child, Blue Ivy, last January.
Beyonce’s partnership with Pepsi will only serve to intensify the rivalry with Coca Cola as they attempt to increase their market share.
The two companies each spent close to £100m on advertising in the US markets in 2012 with competition for young consumers greater than ever.

1 million Boys Robbery gang back on Rampage in Lagos

There are strong indications that some members of the dreaded one-million-boys gang, who went underground after massive police onslaught that led to the arrest of more than 400 of them a few months ago, may have resurfaced.
In the past two weeks some robbers, suspected to be members of the gang, have laid siege to some streets around Peoples/Berger area of Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.
They robbed with impunity, according to residents. Streets worsе hit in the resurgence of the criminals are George Street and Palace Road. For instance, on George Street, the robbers struck repeatedly within days. They robbed residents of house No.1 two weeks ago and few days later, precisely on Thursday, November 29, they stormed No. 51, Palace Road. And just four days later, on December 2, revisited No 3, George Street. The attack on No. 3, George Street was the second.
On the same street, they also recently robbed houses No. 8 and 4. A resident of No. 1, Mr, Chuks Ezekiel, who recounted the incident, stated that on the fateful day, the robbers came around 4 a.m. and robbed five people, dispossessing them of money and cellphones. He added that they came in a group of five armed with guns. Ezekiel, who said he had lived on the street for 10 years, lamented the situation, saying it was an ugly development. “They robbed about five people downstairs and this is the first time such a thing was happening since I started living here,” he said.
A female victim in the attacked one-storey building, who gave her name simply as Mrs. Okeke, said the robbers came to her apartment with torchlight and demanded money from her at gunpoint. “I told them I didn’t have any money. They asked for my phone and I showed it to them and they collected it,” she said, adding that her kids were in the house when the robbers came, but no one was harmed. According to her, the robbers went from one apartment to another, but left “when they felt that everybody was at alert”. On the impact of the incident on residents, she said, “we are now protecting ourselves with prayers” before we go to bed. Also speaking on the robbery menace, a resident of No.3, Mr. Anyaso Ernest, who was also a victim when the house was attacked at 3 a.m., said he lost a phone with two SIM cards and a wallet with his identity card, among other documents.
He said his brother, who came visiting from Delta State, was also robbed. “My brother who came from Warri on Saturday evening was robbed of his handset and wallet containing N5,500,” said Ernest, who was a former executive member of Residents Association. Another female victim, who preferred anonymity, said because she was nursing a baby, her husband pleaded profusely that the robbers should have pity on them. The robbers were said to have gained access to the upper floor by climbing the handrail because the staircase on the ground floor had been fortified with iron-gate after the residents’ first experience. At No.51, Palace Road, the robbers were more brutal, beating some residents and tying up others. They robbed three apartments, according to the residents.
The robbers numbering four were said to have made straight for the middle floor on gaining access into the building where they tied up the occupants, threatening to kill them if they failed to surrender their money. Head of the family, one Chief Gilbert Ekwueme, later succumbed to their demand and allegedly gave them about N800,000. The robbers also carted away two laptops, five blackberries and two other phones as well as some recharge cards belonging to Ekwueme’s wife. The couple was locked up in their apartment before the hoodlums moved to the second floor and attacked the occupants. One Pastor Joy and her husband were beaten mercilessly when they denied having any money at home. Unable to bear the torture, Joy was said to have surrendered about N30,000 church money with her, while the robbers also collected their phones.
“The woman said later that she could not withstand the beating,” recounted a tenant who gave his name as Abraham Ajaka, secretary of Palace Road/Cemetery Landlord and Tenants Association. Not done, the robbers were said to have moved to the boys’ quarter section of the building where one Henry Dede lives and allegedly made away with about N120,000 from the man and his wife. Following the ugly development, it was gathered that residents in these areas and environs now live in fear.
However, according to the residents, they have come up with some security arrangements to checkmate the criminals. They disclosed that the matter had been reported at nearby Trinity Police Division and some security strategies had been put in place. In fact, it was gathered that 30 minutes after the Palace Road robbery, policemen from the division raced to the scene after a belated distress call, but the robbers had disappeared into the night when they arrived. “The police asked us what happened, and after narrating our ordeal to them, they left.

Don Jazzy Splurges N160m On Lekki Home

The last 48hrs, the blogosphere has been awash with news of Michael ‘Don Jazzy’ Collins’ purchase of a mansion reportedly worth one hundred and sixty million naira (N160m) – typical to fashion, he has neither denied nor confirmed the news.

The duplex was rented sometime earlier this year following his bitter public spat with Dbanj and apparently, instead of paying another exhorbitant rent for the mansion located in the high brow NICON estate, Don Jazzy chose to do business by splurging out cash to own the property outrightly.

Controversy Trails Patience Jonathan’s Dressing To Brother-In-Law’s Burial

The burial ceremony of president Jonathan’s younger brother, Chief Meni Jonathan in Otuoke, Bayelsa state last Saturday, December 8th, has come and gone but tongues are wagging over the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan’s choice of outfit for the solemn occasion.
The first lady was dressed in a black coloured gown with heavy gold embroidery and gele to match, heavy make-up and decked in jewelleries in sharp contrast to her husband, president Jonathan, who was decked in a simple black long sleeve shirt, navy blue trousers with a fez cap to match.
Now, not that there’s a particular dress code for burial ceremonies, the grief and sadness in the air makes it a fashion faux pas to be dressed elegantly or heavily accessorized as our own first lady – a simple plain black gown without designs or embroidery with a smaller head cover should’ve been appropriate and the make up should’ve been toned down a bit; it is a burial (her brother-in-law’s for that matter) not wedding or naming ceremony.
But hey! She is the first lady of the Federal Republic and moreso, she is Patience Jonathan…

NECO Introduces Customized Answer Scripts to Curb Examination Malpractices

The chances of committing examination malpractices will further be reduced as the registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof Promise Okplala, has made it known the Council has introduced the use of customised answer scripts for its examinations.
The NECO boss told reporters on Tuesday, in Abuja that the customised answer scripts would tackle the challenge of hoarding of remnants of answer scripts by invigilators. He said such “left over scripts’’ are then sold by the supervisors to fraudsters who engaged in various forms of examination malpractice.
According to him, “The Nigeria of those days is not possible in 2012. They (Examination fraudsters) have so many ways of cheating and we, on our part are always coming out with ways to counter them… These customised scripts appear alike, but every paper has a unique secret code. So if you use the answer script for English Language, for instance, to answer Biology, we will fish you out,” he said.
Okplala also explained that the secret code was only known to three people and would only be revealed to the invigilator an hour before the examination. “So we want to let the public know, especially those that are engaged in examination malpractice, do not bother to write outside the hall because your script will be fished out.”
