Mint Scandal: N2.1 Billion Worth Of N1,000 Notes Missing

From Leadership
The board of directors of the Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) met yesterday over the scandal that rocked the establishment where it was revealed that a whopping N2.1 billion of newly printed N1,000 notes have mysteriously gone missing.
The board meeting, chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, decided to expand the investigation and audit the production of other currency denominations to ascertain the quantity of money that has actually gone missing over the years.
LEADERSHIP had exclusively reported that an acting managing director, Ahmed Bamali, had been appointed to head the Mint company while Ehi Okomoyon, who was the chief executive, was asked to proceed on indefinite leave.

A source with insider knowledge of what transpired at the meeting told LEADERSHIP that the suspension of Okoyomon as managing director on an indefinite basis until all investigations have been concluded was reaffirmed.

The head of security at the NSPMC, Emmanuel Bala, has also been asked to go on compulsory leave by the board of directors of the company. The general manager, management services, Obi Igoban is expected to write him the letter of suspension today.
LEADERSHIP also gathered that the board faulted the suspended MD for failing to disclose to it that such amounts of money had gone missing even though the company had set up an internal investigation after a mint staff was arrested in Lagos for being in possession of unnumbered bank notes.

The board meeting, which reportedly started at about 10am, did not end until 3pm. Other than the initial audit report, the board also discussed routine and budgetary issues.
The CBN had to set up its own audit team, whose findings were put to the board yesterday, and a unanimous vote affirmed that Okoyomon should continue on indefinite suspension.
Part of the CBN audit team’s investigation is to unravel why the management of the Mint company has consistently refused to place Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) in its Abuja and Lagos factories, and why other security measures were deliberately set aside.

The audit team had, however, established that the theft of printed bank notes could be traced to security lapses and security personnel who take custody of newly printed bank notes, and when there were shortages, they were never reprimanded. The entire security department is said to be directly under the supervision of MD.

LEADERSHIP also learnt that this would be the second time that Okoyomon would be going on suspension as he suffered a similar experience in 2007 for three months when Charles Soludo, who had appointed him in the first place, was CBN governor.
After seven and a half years on the job, Okoyomon has been the longest serving MD of the NSPMC, with previous chief executives spending an average of five years in office

Man accused of killing pregnant lover

From  PUNCH
The family of a lady, Gloria Akpan, has accused their daughter’s lover, Ita Eyo, of killing her in his residence in Ayobo area of Ogun State.
Gloria and Eyo both from Akwa Ibom State had been cohabiting since March 2012 before the sad incident occurred on November 3. The lady was six-month pregnant before she died.
A family source, who craved anonymity, said when he spoke to Gloria on Friday, a day before her death, she told him that all was well, adding that it was shocking to learn that she had died the next day.
The source said, “Without seeing any member of the family, that same Saturday, they hurriedly buried her.

“This is suspicious. The information we got was that she was strangled as she bled through her nose and mouth.”

Father of the deceased, Mr. Edet Akpan, 66, a retiree of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, corroborated the family source, insisting that his child was murdered.
Akpan told PUNCH Metro amid sobs, that Eyo, had in March this year asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

He said it was a transport operator, simply called Akintunde that brought Eyo to their home at NDLEA Compound at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
Expectedly, Akpan said during the meeting, he told Eyo to come with his people when they were ready.

Akpan said, “After that meeting, I travelled to my country home in Akwa Ibom. Since I have retired, I have been alternating between home and Lagos.

“While I was still in my hometown, my wife, Gloria’s stepmother, phoned me. She said my daughter had moved out of the house. I exclaimed, ‘move to where?’ She said she had gone to Eyo’s house.
“She also said it was Eyo’s friend, Akintunde that came to take her to the place.

“The news jolted me and I had to rush back to Lagos. When I came back, I set out to search for her whereabouts but my effort was unsuccessful as I neither knew the address of Akintunde nor Eyo’s.”

He said he later got Akintunde on the phone.

Akpan said when he called Akintunde, Eyo and Gloria were with him.
He said, “When I got Akintunde on the phone, he handed the phone over to Eyo. After quarrelling with Eyo, I asked him to pass the phone to Gloria and he did.

“Gloria told me she was well and assured me that she would come home soon. I even asked of my grandson whom she took along with her and she said he was okay.”
Akpan lamented that instead of his daughter coming back home, the news he got the following day was that she had died.

He said, “On Saturday, Akintunde and a woman, came to inform me that my daughter had died. I was confused. I took them to my elder brother’s house. My elder brother asked them to deposit her corpse in the mortuary for further action.

“The same day, I asked my son to go to Eyo’s house. My son told me that they had buried my daughter. This was done without the knowledge of any member of the family. We find the development curious. This is somebody he was not married to. That is why we believe my daughter was murdered for some sinister purposes.”

He said another reason he suspected Eyo was culpable in his daughter’s death was the account of an eyewitness, Gloria’s son, who was living with them.

Akpan said his grandson, who Gloria had for another man, told him that on the fateful day, Eyo and his mother had a disagreement resulting in Eyo pulling something out of the bed and hitting her several times before she died.

He said he headed for a nearby police station in Ikeja, Lagos where they detailed three policemen to arrest Akintunde.

He said with the aid of the policemen, Akintunde took them to Eyo’s house in Ayobo, Ogun State.
He said when they got to Ayobo, it was discovered that that the part where Eyo lives is within the jurisdiction of Ogun State Police Command.
From there, he went to Itele Police Station in Ota, Ogun State where some policemen were detailed to arrest Eyo.

He said Eyo was currently being held at Itele Police Station.

He appealed to the relevant authorities to bring the killer of his daughter to justice.
A police source at Itele Police Division said the Commissioner of Police, Ogun Command, had directed that the matter be taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department.

The source, who did not want his name mentioned, said the Divisional Crime Officer confirmed that the suspect was still being detained.

However, he said the father of the deceased had refused to show up, stressing that the suspect claimed he (Akpan) consented to the burial of his daughter.

“The matter is a murder case; the suspect is still being detained. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the matter be taken to the SCID, Abeokuta,” the source said.

Photos: 12 Months In The Life Of The 226Kg Mother Who Fed Herself To Death

The story of a 625lb mother-of-six who died as a result of her weight is documented in a new TLC show. Dominique Lanoise, 40, from Miami, Florida, was virtually housebound for almost two decades with her daughters washing, feeding and caring for her.
She died in March, after being given less than a year to live by doctor’s who had been waiting to give her potentially life-saving stomach surgery.

Commenting on her situation, Dr Oscar Hernandez from the Southern Bariatric Center in Miami, said:
‘She’s gone to town eating, there is no operation at these numbers.’It wasn’t a one time slip-up it was a systematic assassination of her weight loss program.’
During the TLC special, 600-Pound Mom: Race Against Time, he is seen visiting Lanoise at home telling her: ‘You are going to die in this bed; this bed is your coffin.’
Dr Jorge Rabaza  the bariatric surgeon in charge of giving her life-saving surgery agreed that operating at that point would be too risky.
‘I’m willing to be reasonable with that number. Dominique is 625 I will not do the surgery,’ he said.
‘There is a high mortality rate for morbidly obese patients, where they get blood clots in their legs and the blood clots go up to their lungs. A large blood clot will kill a patient instantaneously.’
He said the eventual goal was to reduce her stomach by 90per cent.
Lanoise, born in Haiti, started gaining weight aged 16, following the birth of her first daughter, Witelane. ‘I used to be skinny but after I had my first baby I got so big.’ she told Asiantown.net.
As her weight skyrocketed to more than 600 lbs, she spent her days sitting in bed wrapped in sheets as she couldn’t find clothes to fit.
She first came to the media’s attention in 2010 when she was forced to stay in Haiti for three months after the earthquake, because she was too heavy for commercial airlines.

“How I Almost Lost My Man Through Bad Advice” – A Must-Read For Women

Wow! This is a MUST read story guys!
Came across this piece online and not sure who wrote it, but it’s a great story with a solid lesson to teach and a reminder to every woman. Please continue reading and don’t forget to share…..someone out there might need this!
“Biyi hasn’t worked for that long?” Dayo’s voice drips with resentment. “For real?” “He’s been trying,” I say in feeble attempt to defend my husband. “You know how the economy is.”
…My husband and I had vowed never to bring in a third party into our relationship but with a bank account screaming for revival, I need to share my burden with someone else. I grip the phone. Dayo is unusually quiet. “You still there?” I ask. “Hello?” “I am here,” she says. “I just didn’t know things were this bad. And all this while, I thought Biyi was providing for the home.” But he is, I argue silently. Well, maybe not financially for now, but in every way else, Biyi is a rock. “It’s not that bad.” My words sound frail. Dayo clucks her tongue. “You might as well be a widow.”
The words hit me like a fist. “Na you I blame,” she continues, oblivious to the damage her words have caused.
“Me? Why?” She is blaming me for this? Seriously?
“Why do you keep paying the bills?”
“Because there is no one else to do it,” I protest, upset.
“For real? He drives your car too?”
“He needs it,” I mutter. “To attend job interviews and stuff. He gets back late sometimes.”
“How late are you talking?
“Nine, ten…ish.”
Dayo pauses for a second. “I hate to say this gurl, but your husband spending your money on another woman.” Whoa! Hang on. Where did that come from? “Haba, Dayo. Biyi would never—” “Look, I know men,” she slices in. “You are his moneybag and he will take you for a ride as long as it takes. Where is your dignity, gurl?” Ride. Dignity. Moneybag. Ouch. “But he’s a good guy,” I manage. Can my husband be using me? It had never crossed my mind in the past, but I now wonder if Biyi is actually having an affair.
“I trust my wonderful Dennis…,” Dayo is saying. I barely listen. My eyes are on the clock. It’s almost midnight and Biyi isn’t home. I force myself to hear what Dayo is saying about Dennis Ono, her multimillionaire-oil- company-golden-husband. Gosh I envy her life, her perfect marriage. “My marriage is wonderful,” Dayo says, as if in affirmation to my undeclared words. “But only because I show Dennis who the boss is. He cannot try nonsense with me. Abi, you think it’s easy to get ten thousand pounds a month as pocket money?” She really gets ten grand a month? That’s like, my entire annual salary in my crappy job plus bonuses. Life is unfair. Honestly. “I am Biyi’s wife,” I say. “I cannot just desert him.” Or can I? At this rate… “In that case,” there is an edge to her voice now, “give him an ultimatum. He gets a job in two weeks or you are out of that marriage.”
“I—”
“Look, I know his type,” she says with conviction. “He conveniently won’t get a job as long as you keep dishing out your money.”
“But—”
“Starve him,” she adds. “No sex. Make life hell. You are not an ATM machine.”
Keys jangle in the hallway. Biyi is home. “Talk later,” I say to Dayo. “He’s back.” “Stand your ground,” Dayo whispers menacingly. “Ultimatum. Two weeks.” I hang up with a sigh. My husband is leaning against the door frame. For a second my heart falters. He looks tired, drawn. But Dayo’s words punctuate my compassion. “Where have you been?” Biyi gives me a side smile. “No hug?” I jerk my head at the wall clock.” Its midnight.” “I had a job interview in Birmingham,” he says. “I called you tell you I was stuck in traffic but I kept getting your voicemail. What’s wrong?” I cock my head. Is that a whiff of female perfume? It is. Dayo is right. He has been with another woman. With my car. Spending my money. My head spins. “Biyi,” I glare at him, “Where are you coming from?” He steps back, surprised. “I went to Birmingham—”
“Did you get it?” I screech. “The job?”
Biyi shakes his head. “I didn’t—”
This is the last straw. I wrench my hand out. “My car keys.”
He gives me a hard level stare. “What is wrong with you, Toni? Did I offend you?”
“Pass my keys!”
He thrusts the car keys to into my palm. I push past him, grab my duffel bag and stuff my overnight things into it. I know I am acting crazy but I have to show him that I would not be taken for a ride. That I am not a moneybag. That I have dignity. I zip the bag up and spin around. My husband is staring at me. “Is everything all right with you, sweetheart?”
“Get out of my way.”
“Where are you going with that bag?”
“I need to clear my head.” I am still yelling.
“Can we talk first?” Biyi suggests.
“I don’t want to talk. Get out of my way.”
He moves out of my path. I swipe a hand across my face, smearing my cheeks with mascara. “Don’t look for me. I will be back when my head clears.” I rush out of the house, jump into my car. My rage doubles as the feminine scent permeates the car. He has been with a woman in my car. I feel like an idiot.
* * *
I pull up in front of Dayo’s mansion. Her husband’s Porsche is in the driveway, and the porch lights illuminate my dreary form as I reach the door. I ball my fists to knock, but a scream freezes the motion.
“Kill me!” I hear Dayo scream. “Good for nothing idiot. Womaniser of the century!” Whoa. Momentarily, I am unable to move. My hand hovers in the air. Dull thuds, muffled screams. Dennis curses. “I warned you never to serve me stew that is not freshly cooked!” “Am I your slave?” Dayo yells back. “If you want fresh stew, get your PA to cook it for you. Or you think I don’t know about her? You think…”
Dayo’s words are silenced by another thump. My hands fall to my side as a flurry of blows stifle her cries. I want call the police, do something…anything. But I cannot move. And so I shut my eyes tight and listen as my friend is pummelled by her husband. The beating stops. I should dash to my car, but something holds me back. “I am sorry I got you upset darling,” Dayo finally says. Her voice is laced with pain. “It is my fault. I should have cooked for you. I…Toni wouldn’t let me get off the phone…its her fault.”
“Next time you talk to me like that, I will tattoo a punch on your forehead,” Dennis growls. “Get into the kitchen and make me fresh stew. And do something about that leech you call a friend.”
That is enough for me. I sprint back to my car and drive home.
* * *
A knock sounds on the window. Biyi. I wind down and he gives me a smile. “Head clear now?” he asks. “Leave me alone,” I mutter. Dayo’s wonderful Denis beats her up? And she never mentioned?
“I will leave you alone in two seconds,” Biyi says. There is a twinkle in his eyes. “But first, get out of the car.” I oblige, grudgingly. “What?” He reaches under the car seat and pulls out a small basket. “I didn’t come home straight from the interview. I stopped over at the Perfume shop to get you this.” He hands the basket over. Inside is a range of exotic feminine perfumes and a small card. I pull the card open, read the words: “Thank you for your support during the hardest times of my life! I love you.”
“That’s why I was late,” he explains as he pulls me into a warm embrace. “You have been so good to me, Toni. I couldn’t have asked for a better wife.” I can’t reply. My throat is lumpy.
“When you left the house to clear your head, I got a call back from the recruiter,” he says with a beam. “God answers prayers, babe. I got the job. It’s a package you won’t believe. Let’s go in. I’ll tuck you into bed and you can tell me what’s bothering you?”
* * *
I awaken to a text message from Dayo. “Denis is flying me to Seychelles this weekend. This is what you get when you stand your ground. You have to be a no nonsense gurl! Don’t you just love my life? Ciao sweetheart xxx.”
I type a quick response back: “Ciao! and i deleted her number right away.
Now, this is one story every woman should read. The grass is never greener on the other side, best believe that. No matter how good a friend’s marriage it, NEVER EVER compare with yours. It’s DEADLY and could cost you so much!

14-Year-Old Boy Who Was About To Become A Father Hangs Himself To Death

A 14-year-old boy who was found hanging at his grandparents home is thought to be the latest victim of the ‘fainting game’.
Liam Hardy – who was about to become a father – was found unconscious at the home in Sutton.
He was taken to the St George’s Hospital in Tooting but died eight days later.
As reported by the Evening Standard, it is feared he may have become another victim of the ‘fainting game’ – in which young people choke themselves to achieve a brief high.
It is a craze which started in America and campaign groups say 86 people may have died in Britain as a result of the game.
Warm tributes have already been paid to the youngster. A memorial has been set up in front of Carshalton Boys’ Sports College which is covered in flowers and messages.
Some of his friends at the school are also receiving counseling.
His girlfriend Paige Ramsay is pregnant with their daughter.
She has left a number of messages on a Facebook page which was set up in the teenager’s memory.
In one she said: ‘Not long until our baby girl is here Liam. I can’t wait to meet her so then I’m finally holding part of you again.
‘I know I always said I was scared of giving birth but now I just don’t care because then you’ll finally be looking back at me again.’
An inquest into the teenager’s death has been opened and adjourned and the Metropolitan Police are not treating the death as suspicious. He died last Tuesday.
Liam’s mother, Janine Hardy, told the Sutton Guardian: ‘Liam was, and still is, my world – both my sons are. He was, and still is, very much loved by all his family and the many other people he came into contact with.
‘Although a typical teenage boy with his love of sports and music, he had a very kind hearted and helpful nature – happy to run errands to the local shop for his Mum, take the rubbish outside, or hold a door open for you enter.
‘He had a very special bond with his Grandad and was extremely close to his younger brother and was very protective of him.
‘The family would like to thank their family and friends, and Liam’s school, for their love, support and kind words at this difficult time. We will miss Liam every day.’
She said that her son had a keen interest in the navy and as a member of the sea cadets had travelled on the aircraft carrier HMS Ocean during its deployment marking this summer’s Olympic Games.
Headteacher Simon Barber said: ‘Liam was a popular boy who was likable, smart and good at sport.

Jonathan’s Facebook Page Attacked For Not Fulfilling Promise

Hundreds of facebook users have besieged President Goodluck Jonathan’s facebook page asking him the reason he broke his promise to release funds to clean up poisonous Lead in Zamfara State.
On Thursday, two rights groups, Human Rights Watch and the Nigerian Youth Climate Action Network, NYCAN, called on the public to prevail on Mr. Jonathan to release the said funds.
“Unless the promised funds are released immediately, cleanup of the contaminated areas won’t be able to start until after next year’s rainy season, leaving thousands more children at risk of death and permanent disability,” said Babatunde Olugboji of Human Rights Watch.
Over 400 children have died from the lead poisoning, according to Mr. Olugboji, and thousands more are in dire need of medical attention.
The rights groups said that government’s failure to release the promised funds has left thousands of children with lifelong disability in the worst lead poisoning outbreak in recent history.
After the groups’ request on Thursday, hundreds of comments telling Mr. Jonathan that ” Children are dying and your government’s failure to act is putting more children at risk” surfaced on his page.
In his last facebook post, Mr. Jonathan’s had pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with his “transformation agenda.”
“Last year, you entrusted me with your mandate by voting for me to emerge as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I continue to hold that mandate in trust for you and future generations of Nigeria.
“Over the past year, this administration has been working on fulfilling the promises I made to you during the campaigns. Many of those promises will take time to come to fruition…,” Mr. Jonathan wrote on his November 1 post.
The comments on the Zamfara lead poisoning were put under Mr. Jonathan’s last post.
“I know you’ve got a lot of difficult tasks to tackle in the next year, but the Zamfara cleanup is one that has a proven solution and you have the funds to solve it. Respect your citizens by cleaning up toxins,” read one comment on his post by Elyse Leonard.
Another post by M Ahmet Nermin read “#Lead poisoning in Zamfara State, Nigeria, killed 400+ children and left thousands more with permanent life-long disability. In May, President Goodluck Jonathan pledged $4,000,000 to clean up the lead contamination. Today, that money is nowhere to be found, and thousands of children remain at risk of death and disability. #childrights.”

Omotola’s Reality Show Breaks Africa Magic Record

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has made waves and is still making high waves in the world of make belief but that world where she rules like a colossus is a different kettle of fish from the real world where everything is real – no cuts, edit or re-cast.
Therefore, it was no surprise when the Nollywood diva initially expressed reservations about her reality show tagged “Omotola: Real Me”. According to her, “if I sit down and tell you I’m confident about this, I would be lying to you. I’m very nervous about the show because everything about me is going to be in the public domain now” she said.
But contrary to her fears, initial reports indicate that the show which premiered yesterday, Thursday, November 6th on DSTV,  shattered the records of AfricaMagic Entertainment (DSTV Channel 151) as the most watched TV show of all time.
According to reports, more than 30 minutes before the airing of the show, the channel started experiencing heavy traffic and as the show eventually started, nearly every home that has access to the channel or other medium, tuned in.
With this news, the beautiful and sexy actress can be rest assured that the project will not ‘mar’ her career as she first feared, but may actually go on to catapault her to new heights than ever before.
Who watched the show yesterday? Did it meet your expectations or not?

Rooney ready for derby Against Manchester city

Wayne Rooney says United have the confidence and belief to get a result against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
The Reds have a three-point advantage over their closest title challengers following another come-from-behind win at Reading last Saturday after City had earlier been held to a draw at home to Everton.
Rooney believes it is already starting to look like a straight fight for the title between the two Manchester clubs and says the Reds are feeling good ahead of Sunday's showdown.
"It’s a massive game [on Sunday] and it was nice to get the win at Reading - we can go into the game knowing we are three points above City," Wayne told MUTV last weekend straight after the win at the Madejski Stadium.
"It gives us that extra belief and confidence to go there and try and get the three points.
"It looks like it is starting to go that way [being a two-horse race], but this is a crazy league and anything can happen.
"We saw Chelsea at the top for the first eight or nine games and we were five or six points behind then, so you have to stay focused for all of the games and try to stay near the top of the league."

34-year-old Farmer Sentenced To Death For Robbery

A farmer at Kwale town, in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, Emeka Ogwu, has been sentenced to death by an Effurun High Court for armed robbery.
Speaking in court, one of the prosecution witnesses, Dorothy Asekpokai, a business woman, had told the court that the convict attempted to rob her on June 12, 2007, when she visited her new building site around Osubi.
She also identified the convict as the one who attempted to rob her with a gun but she narrowly escaped after driving away at top speed.
She said that in the process of escaping, she knocked down the convict, after which she raised alarm that eventually led to his arrest.
34-year-old Ogwu was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, attempt to commit armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, contrary to Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
In the court, presided over by Justice Godwin Gbemre’s opinion, prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, and therefore sentenced Ogwu to death.

Shocking; Prophet TB Joshua’s Church Sells Registration Forms For US$100 To Go Receive Your Healing

Police moved in on Monday to disperse hundreds of people gathered at Belvedere Teacher’s College after they responded to a TV advert to come and receive “spiritual healing” from Nigerian preacher, TB Joshua.
The desperate crowd, mainly women, were under the impression TB Joshua would be at the college in person. College authorities called in the police to restore order as the restive crowd confronted organisers of the event.
The crowd were advised to reconvene at the Harare Agricultural Showgrounds on Monday evening but they were disappointed to discover TB Joshua was not in Zimbabwe.
One woman who travelled from Gokwe said she had an illness which she hoped TB Joshua could cure.
“I just came here hoping to get deliverance from the man of God, only to be told that we should register for an appointment,” she said after making the 340km bus trip to the capital.
Her husband, who travelled with her, said: “We were surprised to hear that we are required register. The message which we heard and saw on Emmanuel TV was that TB Joshua was coming to heal us, not the issue of registration.”
A member of TB Joshua’s church in Zimbabwe, identified as Chibwe, told the crowd: “The advert on TV was saying that people should come for registration so that they are ready to travel to Nigeria. So please don’t be confused because there is no chaos in Christ.”
The crowd were asked to buy “registration forms” for US$100 each and deposit a further US$2,000 for the trip to Nigeria for an audience with TB Joshua at his Synagogue Church of All Saints which is headquartered in Lagos.
Several Zimbabwean politicians have travelled to Nigeria over the last year for an audience with TB Joshua, believed by supporters to have healing powers and an ability to see into the future.
Among those who have sought TB Joshua are MDC-T leader and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Home Affairs Minister Kembo Mohadi and Zanu PF officials Oppah Muchinguri and Chris Mushowe.

Man Reports Prostitute To Police, Says She Still Owes Him 10 Minutes

Police in Maine say a man called them to complain a prostitute hadn’t given him his money’s worth – so they arrested him.
Police say New Hampshire resident Scott Pipher was arrested this week. The 34-year-old is charged with engaging a prostitute.
Old Orchard Beach, Maine, police say Pipher called them March 25 to complain a woman he’d hired “shorted him by 10 minutes.”
Police say their investigation also led to the arrests of two women believed to be prostitutes contacted by Pipher through a website.
Pipher is scheduled to be arraigned in Maine District Court in Biddeford next week. Telephone calls to numbers listed for him in Portsmouth, N.H., have gone unanswered.

50 Nigerian Girls Used as S*x Slaves Rescued from Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire

In a rather disturbing development, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) has rescued 50 Nigerian girls, mostly underaged, working as sex slaves in neighboring Ghana and Cote d’ Ivoire.
The girls, apparently victims of human trafficking, are between the ages of 16 and 25. Executive Secretary of NAPTIP, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, who made this known at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said three suspects, acting as their slave masters, were also arrested. She said the suspects, who admitted to the crime, would be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others engaged in the activities.
Jedy-Agba, who was represented by NAPTIP’s Director of Counselling and Rehabilitation in the agency, Mrs Lily Oguejiofor, said the rescue operation was the second of its kind this year, having rescued 10 girls in July, 2012 from Ivory Coast, bringing the total number of girls rescued this year from West African countries to 60.
She said the operation was necessitated by disturbing reports from a variety of sources, including the Nigerian mission in those countries, the media, Nigerians in diaspora, and civil society organisations in the countries. She then noted that the reports were all authenticated by an intelligence report from the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) and corroborated by a civil society organisation working on anti-trafficking issues in Ghana known as “Operation Mobilisation in Kumasi.”

“Snake On A Plane” Causes Emergency Landing In Egypt

Egyptian cobra
90 passengers aboard an Egypt Air flight from Cairo to Kuwait were shocked earlier in the week when a snake reportedly bit a Jordanian man who smuggled the reptile onboard.
According to an Egypt Air official, the 48-year-old passenger, who owns a reptile shop in Kuwait, decided to hide the Egyptian cobra in a carry-on bag. Things went awry when the passenger tried to control the snake after it bit his hand and started slithering under the seats.
The incident forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in the Egyptian resort town of Al Ghardaqa on the Red Sea, according to The Jordan Times.
The Egyptian daily al-Masry al-Youm reported that the man refused medical treatment, claiming his wound was only superficial. The plane resumed its flight to Kuwait after local authorities confiscated the snake.
