Nigeria Now Ranked As 7th Most Terrorised Country In The World

Boko Haram’s onslaught on the Nigerian state coupled with pockets of armed insurgency in different parts of the country has earned Nigerian an uneviable position of the 7th most-terrorised country in the world, according to the latest ranking of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI).
From the 16th position in 2008, Nigeria went down to 11 in 2009; climbed a step up (12) in 2010; and now a downward spiral to 7th with a GTI of 7.24. According to the report, Nigeria recorded 168 incidents of terrorism in 2011 from which 437 persons died, 614 persons sustained injuries and 33 properties were destroyed.
According to the ranking, Nigeria is worse than Sudan, which is ranked 11th and Mali (34th).
Ahead of Nigeria on the index are Iraq (9.56), Pakistan (9.05), Afghanistan (8.67), India (8.15), Yemen (7.30) and Somali (7.24)
Of the 158 countries, 43 are free of terrorism. They include Burkina Faso, Brazil, Congo Republic, Gabon, Ghana, Jamaica, Gambia, Liberia, North Korea, South Korea, Poland, Uruguay, Singapore and Zambia.
Produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the GTI maps and analyzes trends in terrorism over the last 10 years and systematically ranks and compares 158 countries according to the impact of terrorism. The index is based on data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) from the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, START at the University of Maryland.
The GTI uses four indicators to measure the impact of terrorism: the number of terrorist incidents, the number of deaths, the number of casualties and the level of property damage. These indicators are used to create a weighted five year average for each country, which takes into account the lasting effects of terrorism. The score given to each country therefore indicates the impact of a terrorist attack on a society in terms of the fear and subsequent security response.

Suleja Bombing: Witness Tells Court Suspects Were Each Promised 72 Virgins

An Army Officer told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that four suspects of the Suleja bombing were promised 72 virgins each as incentives.
The officer, whose name was not given for security reasons, was testifying in the case filed by the State Security Service against the six accused Suleja/Madalla bomb attack.
He said in his evidence-in-chief that the information was contained in a cell-phone confiscated from the suspects at the point of their arrest in Gumel Junction, Kachia in Kaduna State.
The witness explained that a total of four mobile phones were ceased from the suspects. According to him, one of the mobile phones carried the promise of incentives and the secret code to arrange and detonate an explosive.
The suspects are: Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana-Umar, Mohammed Ali and Musa Adam. They were arrested on July 28, 2011 in Kachia, on their way to Kaduna where the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, and other dignitaries were to attend a sporting function on July 29 at the township stadium.
It will be recalled that Umar Ibrahim and Shuaibu Abubakar, were also standing trial for alleged multiple bombings and killings in Suleja and Madalla both in Niger.
It was reported that the witness reads the first message as thus: “Do a deed which Allah by his grace and mercy saves you from the punishment of the grave and a dangerous bridge with a speed of light.
“Save you from the greatest fear. Allow you save from hell fire. 70 members of your family shall marry you 72 virgins in paradise, gives you a crown of respect, which even the prophet will be impressed with.
“Keep your soul in the green birds of paradise and your wish to return to the World and die as he died because of the good blessings and reward you encounter after such noble last deed. I pray for you to do such a noble deed,” the message stated.
Mr Emeka Okoro, the counsel to the accused persons, however, applied for a short adjournment to enable him to access the officer’s statement which was not before the court.
Justice Bilkisu Aliyu then adjourned cross examination of the witness to Dec 6. Aliyu ordered the State Security Service to avail the counsel to the accused persons with the army officer’s statement. (NAN)

42 years Old Woman Arrested In Lagos For Selling Babies

The Police have arrested a 42-year old woman, Beatrice Nwankwo for her alleged involvement in the sale of babies at Ajegunle, a surburb of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
The suspect who claimed to be a nurse was using her one-room apartment at 83, Mosafejo Street, Ajegunle, Lagos as a facility where pregnant women were delivered of their babies.
Sources gathered from the police that after after a woman was delivered of her baby, the baby will suddenly disappear and the mother will be told that her baby died during delivery.
She was arrested by the police from the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Adeniji Adeleniji Police Command, Lagos where she is being detained. She is to be charged with child theft and operating illegal health facility.
Investigations revealed further that Beatrice from Umuahia in Abia State, initially rented the room for dwelling but later converted it into a health facility for pregnant women to deliver their babies. “We discovered that she was using her room as a health facility to carry out abortion and deliver pregnant young women of their babies. Her activities have been disturbing the peace in this area,” one of her neighbours told sources.
Police sources said numerous complaints had been lodged at FSARS by women who after being delivered of their babies were told that the babies had died. “This was the usual story line and this had led to disturbances in the area during which some residents were injured.
Sources gathered that her arrest followed a complaint made by one of the victims who suspected that the suspect sold her baby.
According to her neighbours, some young pregnant girls were usually found with her and after being delivered of their babies, the babies will disappear. ”Sometimes, they will be quarrelling over money suspected to have been received from the sale of the babies,” the source added.
When sources visited FSARS, the woman was seen in one of the cells there.
Police officers on duty declined to comment on her arrest, but a detective who spoke on condition of anonymity said investigation was still ongoing on her activities and that she would soon be charged to court.
A senior police officer identified as DSP Lado is said to be in charge of the investigation.
Efforts to speak with the suspect at the station failed.

Nollywood actor John Okafor aka Mr Ibu vented on his facebook page about how people put too much faith in their pastors to solve all the problems and more.
Read below what he wrote and his facebook page and let us know what you think.
STUPIDITY is when you don’t have a bicycle and you give your last penny to your pastor to buy a jet.
MUMU is when you can’t pay your children’s school fees and yet have money to contribute to your church to build expensive schools which your children will never attend..
IDIOCY is when you refuse to take your very sick child to the hospital because your pastor said you should not do so, yet that same pastor secretly runs to USA for medical attention any time he has a
headache.
KOLO is when you see a poor beggar on the road and you refuse to give him 50 naira out of the 5000 naira in your pocket because it is your tithe money….
YOU are a zombie when you trek, dance and gallivant for 30 kilometers under the hot
sunsweating and smelling like poo during your revival program, while your pastor is inside a full
option, factory fitted air-conditioned state of the art SUV with his delectable wife slow driving along the road.
IGNORANCE is when you believe it when your pastor tells you not to live a worldly life, yet he enjoys all the best things in the world;the fine houses, cars, jets, babes etc, while you are waiting till you get to heaven to enjoy your own….
Stop worshiping your pastors!!! Stay focused on Jesus The author and finisher of your Faith. And learn to study the word. – John Okafor (Nollywood).

A group of teachers were shocked when some of their students ended up running to the nurse’s office after sampling a drink dubbed as Bob Marley’s ‘anti-energy drink.’
Reports say students at a New Jersey middle school became ill after drinking a beverage called Marley’s Mellow Mood, named after the deceased reggae star, which they purchased in the school cafeteria. The drink is described as the ‘anti-energy drink’ because 100% natural, calming botanicals.
Fox 5 News reports some students spit up and threw up while others said they were drowsy and lethargic after consuming it.
The label of the drink reads: “The all natural botanical ingredients in this product have been specially blended to mellow your mood, and may cause drowsiness. Best enjoyed when you are ready to relax. Do not mix with alcohol. Not intended for children…”
A letter was sent home to parents from The William R. Satz School in Holmdel saying, “Several students went to our nurse’s office to report symptoms of nausea, headaches, light-headiness, and a feeling of lethargy.”

Obama Tops Forbes ranking of world's most powerfu

U.S. President Barack Obama speaks at the Business Roundtable in Washington December 5, 2012. Meeting with a business group on Wednesday, Obama renewed his call to include tax hikes on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans as part of the final "fiscal cliff" resolution, and to call for including an increase in the nation's borrowing limit.
Image by: LARRY DOWNING / REUTERS

The US president leads it, of course, and then there's the Pope, and Angela Merkel, and Facebook's founder, and other global rainmakers on Forbes' ranking of the mightiest earthlings.

But the magazine's 2012 list of the planet's most powerful people also features folks who might raise an eyebrow or two: a Mexican drug baron, and the pudgy-faced young leader of North Korea, a hermit state assailed for pursuing a nuclear program at the expense of feeding its very poor people.
Last year's No. 2 on the list, Chinese President Hu Jintao, is among the heavyweights off the list altogether this time. In Hu's case it is because he's on his way out of office.
The ranking features 71 names, a figure Forbes said it set as a cutoff because there are an estimated 7.1 billion people in the world and thus the ranking works out to one very heavy hitter for every 100 million people.
For the second year in a row, US President Barack Obama led the ranking, with Forbes noting that he won the popular vote, an electoral college majority, and seven of the seven toss-up states in the November election.
Obama faces challenges galore, such as a budget crisis, naggingly high unemployment, and renewed strife in the Middle East.
"But Obama remains the commander in chief of the world's greatest military and head of the sole economic and cultural superpower --literally the leader of the free world," Forbes said.
The silver medal of power went to Merkel, the German chancellor, whom Forbes described as the backbone of the 27-member European Union and the person who carries the fate of the euro on her shoulders.
Third place went to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was re-elected to a third term "after a few years swapping posts with Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev," and "officially regains the power that no one believes he truly gave up."
Forbes said it assembled the list using four criteria: power over lots of people, financial resources controlled, whether the person has power in various spheres of life, and whether that person actively uses their power.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg -- 16 on the list -- fit the bill nicely because he is a politician overseeing a huge and hugely important city, and is a billionaire, a media magnate and a major philanthropist.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates was fourth, while Pope Benedict XVI, leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, ranked fifth.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was 25th. He dropped from 9th in last year's ranking because Facebook's debut this year as a listed company was a dud, Forbes said.
One less-than-savory name on the list: Mexican billionaire drug cartel leader Joaquin Guzman Loera, alias "El Chapo," the Sinaloa cartel leader who Forbes said is responsible for many of the illegal narcotics entering the United States every year. He was ranked 63rd.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, 29, who took over from his late father Kim Jong-Il this year, ranked 44th.
Forbes said some observers believe one of his uncles is actually in charge -- but that in any case, satellite footage shows a message praising Kim carved into a hillside in his "reclusive, rusting nuclear state" measuring half a kilometer long.

Minister affirms plan to demolish 31 estates in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Bala Mohammed has vowed that the FCT Administration would go ahead with the demolition of 31 housing estates in Lugbe, a satellite town in the nation’s capital.

The Minister who made the affirmation made this known while defending the FCT’s 2013 budget, where he stated that his administration would make good its threat to demolish the estates despite an order by the Senate Committee on FCT that the FCT Administration stop its plans to demolish the estates.
However the Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT; Senator Smart Adeyemi disagreed with the Minister insisting that the FCT Administration has not done all it can to prevent the proliferation of illegal houses in the FCT.
On Saturday the 28th of September 2012, officials of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) rolled out their bulldozers and demolished 500 units of Minanuel Estate.
The joint committee on FCT has said it would dig deeper into the issue to find a solution.

Switzerland returns $700m Abacha’s loot to Nigeria

The Swiss envoy however added that he is unaware of the existence of $1 billion alluded to by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as still being held in Swiss banks.According to Dr. Hodel, the Abacha case and others has compelled Switzerland to take more stringent steps to combat illicit dealings in its financial sector.
Some of the measures included: no anonymous accounts; banking secrecy is lifted when there are suspicions of criminal activities; strengthening anti-money laundering regulations; and being an active member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) against money laundering and terrorist financing.

62-year-old African Jumps From Dubai Hotel Over Financial Problems

Gloria Hotel in Dubai internet city,
An elderly African man and former prisoner committed suicide over financial and family problems last week in Dubai, police say. The man jumped from his room window at the fourth floor of the Gloria Hotel in Dubai internet city, it was revealed on Wednesday.
Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police, said a 62-year old Somali man committed suicide for what was believed to be financial problems he could not solve.
“This man was involved in financial cases and has taken different loans. He was jailed on a charge of defaulting to pay back his dues. The man was suffering from psychological problems too,” Major General Al Mazeina said.
“Investigation revealed that the man was under the influence of alcohol prior committing suicide,” he said. “He was working in Dubai and he was staying at the hotel with his daughter, who was visiting him on a visit visa,” he said.

Man Crushed By Speeding Train In India

Dubai Metro
Dubai Metro was the scene of a suicide on Monday, the first death in the railways’ three years of operation.
An Indian worker committed suicide on the track early on Monday.
Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police on Wednesday said that a 36-year-old Indian worker identified as H.U.M (initials) died between 5am and 6:30am on the Metro track on Shaikh Zayed Road near the Jumeirah Lake Towers station.
“The speeding Metro struck the man while he was lying on the track,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Al Mazeina said the man, under the influence of alcohol, used the emergency fire exit to access the track and the body was not identified immediately as the man had no identity documents.
Officials said when the train hit the man, no alarm went off until his body was strewn on the tracks.
His body was left beyond recognition and police took two days to identify him.
“Despite the fact that all the ways to those exits are closed and very well monitored, the man managed to jump and go inside.
“The police, Road and Transport Authority are working on investigating the incident,” he said.
A friend of H.U.M reported him missing a day before his death.
“The friend told police H.U.M was depressed and unhappy because he wanted to go back home but the sponsor, for no clear reasons, was not letting him go so he would put an end to his life,” Maj. Gen. Al Mazeina said.
Maj. Gen. Al Mazeina said H.U.M, had been working in Dubai since 2010 and had asked his company to cancel his residency visa and send him home.
“H.U.M complained to the Ministry of Labour to make his company cancel his visa. The company did cancel his visa but we are investigating why the company delayed sending H.U.M back home,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Al Mazeina said in the press conference on Wednesday that police are waiting for the technical report from the Road and Transport Authority regarding the heights of barriers on emergency fire exits. [GN]

Nun To Convert To Islam To Marry Man She Accused Of Molesting Her

A Nun
A nun who accused a man of rape and then confessed to having consensual sex with him shocked a Dubai court on Wednesday by agreeing to marry him and change her religion.
The European woman was granted bail on Wednesday after her lawyer confirmed that she and the man she accused of rape would soon wed. And she will have to embrace Islam to marry him. In similar cases, the court usually decides to award a suspended jail term to parties involved.
The 30-year-old nun who had been on holiday with friends when she met the 40-year-old Iranian had accused the man of raping her after a desert safari trip.
But she later admitted before the Dubai Misdemeanour Court that they had consensual sex. “I asked the court to grant my client an adjournment to be able to finalise the marriage procedures. She decided to convert to Islam. We are seeking a lenient punishment or a suspended imprisonment as soon as we provide the court with the marriage contract,” the lawyer told Presiding Judge Ehad Ahmad on Wednesday.
A source revealed that the nun had been visiting Dubai with friends when she got involved with the man.
At the beginning of Wednesday’s hearing, the lawyer asked Judge Ahmad to grant him time to prepare his defence and submit the marriage contract.
But the judge told the lawyer to read the file and present his argument and not to delay the case unnecessarily.
The lawyer said: “The woman agreed to convert to Islam and they will be getting married soon. As per the Penal Code, we ask the court to acquit the defendants of having consensual s*x or grant them leniency and suspend their imprisonment.”
The lawyer requested bail for the nun who said she spent 17 days in provisional detention.
“The court will grant bail to the lady after she deposits her passport in custody or a bailer’s passport. The bailer will be fined Dh5,000(N213,653) in case she fails to carry out any law enforcement procedure,” said presiding judge Ahmad.
A verdict is expected on Sunday.
The lady who was holidaying in Dubai with a group of friends told police that the Iranian man raped her in his home. The Iranian was apprehended in Ras Al Khaimah within 48 hours, but when questioned by the police, he said they had consensual s*x.
“During prosecution questioning, the lady admitted that when the Iranian kissed her neck, she felt embarrassed and interacted with him. She admitted that they had consensual s*x and that she couldn’t refuse him because of shyness,” a prosecution source told reporters.
The European independently faces the charge of falsely reporting to police that she was raped

Woman Who Had To ‘Masturbate For Hours’ Commits Suicide

Gretchen Molannen, 39, a woman afflicted with a disease that left her permanently sexually aroused, committed suicide on Sunday, according to police. She committed suicide just days after the Tampa Bay Times published a story detailing her debilitating condition.
Gretchen Molannen suffered from a condition called persistent genital arousal disorder for more than a decade and a half, which left her constantly physically, but not psychologically, aroused, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Women with the rare and debilitating sexual condition, such as Gretchen, often have to masturbate for hours on end simply to get some relief.
According to the Journal of Sex and Marriage Therapy, any number of events or medications can trigger the disorder, including going off antidepressants, starting menopause, and even a bad fall.
It is unclear how many women suffer from the disease, but experts estimate it to be in the thousands.

21st Birthday Bash Advertised on Facebook Goes out of Control as over 1000 Guests Turned up!

For those who are fond of advertising everything possible – their jobs, businesses, private lives – online, especially Facebook, this story might be of interest. Ollie Boorman, a computer engineer who lives in Hertfordshire , UK advertised his 21st birthday party online to try and boost the number of guests attracted more than 1,000 guests.
Ollie’s party spiralled out of control as hundreds of strangers descended on the quiet road in Tewin, Hertfordshire that police were called in just three hours after the bash started as neighbours complained of thefts, smashed cars and fighting.
The 21-year-old was then charged and admitted for causing a public nuisance at a court hearing on Friday. Boorman had expected about 200 people to turn up after he publicised the event online but was stunned when five times as many arrived at his parents home in Tewin, Hertfordshire.
As a matter of fact, Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon was one of those who turned up to congratulate Boorman, who is a friend of her family.

25-Year-Old Student Stripped Naked For Sleeping With Married Man

There was drama in Chitungwiza on Monday morning when a married man was caught with a lover after taking advantage of his wife’s one night absence.
Leonard Gandari’s wife had gone to Banket where she was attending a funeral and Leonard deemed that as a golden opportunity to ‘import’ a ‘prostitute’ into their matrimonial house in Zengeza 4, in the presence of his wife’s siblings. The lover was identified as Memory Mupindu (25) and she was stripped by angry neighbours after the couple overslept and Leonard was late to ‘deport’ his catch before co-tenants and his wife’s siblings had woken up. Memory refused to be labeled a prostitute arguing that she had been made to believe that Leonard was single hence she slept comfortably up to the time when neighbours were sweeping their yards. “I’m not a prostitute but we were in love. We met two weeks ago and he told me that he was not married and he stays with his sisters. We came together yesterday night without any idea that things will generate into such chaos. I am in form four at herentals college in Chitungwiza,” said the woman as tears rolled down her cheeks. Leonard could not give his side of the story as he fled. Neighbours saw Memory trying to scale over the pre-cast wall in a bid to escape after realising that she had overslept. She was however, unlucky and was thoroughly beaten up and stripped. “It is the wife’s young sister who smelt a rat and woke up and Memory sensed danger and tried to escape but in vain,” narrated one of the neighbours. Angry residents went on to call Leonard’s wife identified as Mirriam Chinduta who arrived at the scene and found the scene still ‘fresh’. The wife broke into the house to find the alleged prostitute on her sofas. Residents were bitter that Leonard abuses his wife by regularly assaulting her which he confirmed by again assaulting her after she confronted him over the issue. Mirriam reportedly sought refuge at a nearby house in fear of being attacked. The seemingly too violent Leonard tried to attack the news crew but shied away from the lenses. Fearing the mob, largely made up of the fairer sex, Leonard locked himself in the house, leaving his mistress to face the music. A close source said Leonard sneaked the O-Level student into the house around 9pm and at around 11pm, his wife’s sister and children heard voices in the bedroom. “We were seated in the house and at around 11pm we heard voices and sent in his young child who told us that there was a lady on his bed. We went in but we couldn’t find her because she was hiding. We woke up at around 4am and sat in the dining room and he (Leonard) was just milling around and he could not go to work, which made us suspicious and we guarded the gate. Later we heard our neighbour screaming that there was someone on the wall and we saw her and caught her,” revealed the mole.
